DEL MAR, Calif. (July 13, 2025) – Stakes-winning Northern California Yearling Sale graduate Mala and fellow California-bred Cali Cat are entered in Friday’s $100,000 Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds at Del Mar.
Mala is by Union Rags, out of the Smart Strike mare Witchy One, was bred by Carliwood Farms, is owned by Charles Greg Avery and trained by Steve Sherman. The $40,000 purchase at the Northern California Yearling Sale has two wins in five starts, earnings of $77,903 and is making his first start since a win in the Bay Meadows Juvenile Stakes on Dec. 15 last year.
Cali Cat is by American Pharoah, out of the More Than Ready mare Ready for Romance, was bred by Thomas Bachman, is owned by Hronis Racing and trained by John Sadler. He has two wins in seven starts, earnings of $139,800 and is coming off a second in the May 24 Snow Chief Stakes, presented by City National Bank.
