CYPRESS, Calif. – Dominant in the Golden State Juvenile Nov. 1, Tap Back will try two turns for the first time in the $100,000 King Glorious for Golden State Series eligible 2-year-olds on Sunday at Los Alamitos.
Named in honor of the winner of the 1988 Hollywood Futurity and 1989 Haskell, the King Glorious is restricted to 2-year-olds bred or sired in California. The one mile race is the main event on the final day of the Winter Thoroughbred meet.
Post time Sunday is 12:30 p.m. The King Glorious, which is the seventh of nine races, has a scheduled post time of 3:28 p.m.
A son of Einstein and the Tapit mare Tap Tap Ur It owned by co-breeder Richard Barton and trained by Jeff Bonde, Tap Back led throughout in the Golden State Juvenile, ultimately pulling away late to win by six lengths as a 14-1 outsider.
The win was the second in four starts for the dark bay and pushed his earnings to $163,100.
Tap Back will try to improve upon his first race at Los Alamitos. He finished fourth, beaten 14 ¼ lengths by runaway winner Raging Whiskey, in the Capote Stakes Sept. 21.
Owned by breeders Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman and trained by Tim Yakteen, Govenor Cinch will be seeking his third consecutive win Sunday.
A Govenor Charlie colt out of the Ghostzapper mare Ghostly, Govenor Cinch defeated $50,000 state bred maidens sprinting on Halloween, then stretched out successfully to the King Glorious distance, winning by 1 ½ lengths as the 11-10 favorite Nov. 22. He’s 2-for-5 in his career with a bankroll of $48,960.
Seventh in the Golden State Juvenile, Club Aspen will make his Los Alamitos debut for owner Lawrence Lewis and trainer Craig Lewis.
Bred by Harris Farms, the Clubhouse Ride colt out of the Talkin Man mare Aspen Gal has a win in six races and earnings of $58,211. He’s tried eight furlongs once, finishing sixth of seven in the Zuma Beach on turf Oct. 6 at Santa Anita.
Runner-up behind Raging Whiskey in the Capote, Dapper will race beyond seven furlongs for the first time for owner-breeder Bo Hirsch and trainer Gary Stute.
The gelded son of Papa Clem and the Bernstein mare Well Polished has earned $57,655 while winning once in four starts. Dapper’s victory came at 16-1 in his Aug. 30 debut at Del Mar.
The field is completed by maidens Rookie Mistake and Papster.
Owned by breeder J. Paul Reddam’s Reddam Racing LLC and trained by Doug O’Neill, Rookie Mistake has started three times, finishing second and third in two of his defeats. The son of Square Eddie and the General Meeting mare Meetmeinthewoods has banked $18,551.
O’Neill and Reddam will be looking for their third King Glorious win at Los Alamitos. They scored consecutively with Found Money in 2015 and Ann Arbor Eddie in 2016.
Owned by Jim Causkey Memorial LLC and breeder Terry Lovingier, Papster has started twice for trainer Mike Harrington. After finishing second in his Oct. 19 debut, the Munnings colt out of the El Prado mare Rizzi Rose finished a distant third at 44-1 in the Golden State Juvenile. He’s earned $32,000.
