ARCADIA, Calif. (June 5, 2022)—Taking full advantage of a California-bred incentive program that allows horses to run at the same allowance condition they’ve already won at, providing they’re changing surfaces, Mark Glatt’s Teddy’s Barino stretched out nicely for the first time to register a neck victory in Sunday’s $69,000 Santa Anita allowance feature. Ridden by Mike Smith, Teddy’s Barino got one mile on turf in 1:35.45.
Settling nicely from her outside post position in the run to the Club House turn, Teddy’s Barino was a comfortable second to Ghostem up the backside and was two lengths back with three furlongs to run. With Smith sitting motionless, Teddy’s Barino moved to engage the leader a quarter mile out, made the lead turning for home and just held sway over Eleuthera to her inside and Big Clare and Hot On the Trail to her outside with the top four finishers separated by a neck and two noses on the wire.
“I think this filly is better on dirt, but she was just better than this field,” said Glatt, who saddled Teddy’s Barino to a 5 ¼ length win going six furlongs on dirt on May 13. “She tolerates the turf, but when it really counts, she’s a dirt horse, I think. She’s won a couple on turf, but her numbers and watching her visually, she’s a lot better filly on dirt.
“This Cal-bred program gives us a great incentive with races like this. You can flip-flop surfaces like we did today. When you do that, you get an extra condition out of it.”
A 4-year-old filly by Grazen, out of the Speightstown mare Miss Rebound, Teddy’s Barino was bred in California by her owners, Red Barron’s Barn, LLC and Vaya Con Suerte.
Off at 5-2 in a field of eight fillies and mares three and up, she paid $7.60, $5.00 and $4.40.
With three wins and a second from six starts, Teddy’s Barino picked up $41,400 for the win, increasing her earnings to $155,130.
Ridden by Kyle Frey, Big Clare, on the far outside, finished a nose better than Hot On the Trail and paid $7.80 and $5.00 while off at 8-1.
Off at 23-1 with Ramon Vazquez, Hot On the Trail bested Eleuthera by a nose and paid $10.00 to show.
Eleuthera, the 4-5 favorite with Mario Gutierrez, lacked room late at the rail and just missed in a big effort.
Fractions on the race were 22.90, 46.89, 1:11.37 and 1:23.47.
With Santa Anita’s Winter/Spring Meet closing day looming in two weeks on June 19, live racing resumes with first post time for a nine-race card on Friday at 1 p.m.
Admission gates will open early on Saturday at 8 a.m. for a Belmont Stakes Day undercard from New York.
