ALBANY, Calif. (Dec. 2, 2023) – California-bred Wild Jewels re-rallied in late stretch to edge Classy City, then survived a stewards’ inquiry to win Saturday’s $75,000 Gold Rush Stakes for 2-year-olds at Golden Gate.
Wild Jewels is by Tamarando, out of the Distorted Humor mare Ribbon of Jewels, was bred by owner Mr. & Mrs. Larry Williams and is trained by Steven Specht.
The Williamses also are breeders and owners of two other winners on Saturday’s Golden Gate card — Tiger in My Tank, a 2-year-old California-sired son of Smiling Tiger who won an optional claimer and Ward ‘n Jerry, a 10-year-old Cal-bred son of Lucky Pulpit and former graded winner who took the day’s finale, a $12,500 claimer.
Wild Jewels has four wins in six starts, earnings of $148,810 and was coming off a win in the Nov. 11 Golden Nugget.
He ran the mile in 1:39.90 and won by a half-length at odds of 2-5 in a field of six.
