$300,000 Cal Breeders’ Champion Filly QIAONA

ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 26, 2013) – Longshot Qiaona, who trailed by as many as 15 lengths down the backside, rallied furiously through the stretch to win Saturday’s $300,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes for 3-year-old fillies eligible to the Golden State Series on the Sunshine Millions card at Santa Anita.

Qiaona is by Wilko, out of the Skywalker mare Starlet Sky, was bred by B&B Zietz Stables, is owned by Curt and Lila Lanning, trained by Ed Moger Jr. and was ridden by Garrett Gomez.

The $4,500 Barretts purchase, who started her career in a $25,000 maiden claimer at Pleasanton, was coming off a maiden turf win Dec. 6. In eight career starts, she has earnings of $228,010.

Qiaona ran the mile in 1:37.75 on a set-fast track and won by a neck at odds of 23-1. Unusual Way was second and pacesetter Marks Mine was third in the field of 11.
