DEL MAR, Calif. (Sept. 2, 2013) – Northern California Yearling Sale graduate Jedi Mind Trick nailed pacesetter Gangnam Guy at the wire to win Monday’s $150,000 I’m Smokin Stakes for Golden State Series eligible 2-year-olds at Del Mar.
Jedi Mind Trick is by Don’tsellmeshort, out of the Ice Age mare Icy n’Elegant , was bred by Running Luck Ranch, is owned by Doubledown Stable and trained by John Sadler.
“This little horse came up for sale and we thought we could win a starter allowance with him, and we did,” said Sadler. “Then we thought we’d try the Cal-breds. Dick Hines is the one who spotted him in Northern California. Tony Diaz, an old-time jock, trained him and he called me on the phone and kind of gave me good (information) because we didn’t have him long before the first race for us. The purses are so good here to win a starter allowance, he paid for most of himself on the first race. We’re into gravy time. ”
The $2,500 purchase at the Northern California Yearling Sale has three wins in four starts, earnings of $136,828 and was coming off an Aug. 15 starter optional claiming win.
Gangnam Guy was second and Ashleyluvssugar was third in the field of six.
Jedi Mind Trick ran the six furlongs in 1:09.76 and won by a head at odds of 5-1.
