Jay Hovdey on Skye Diamonds

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com Most of us, finding ourselves awake at 3 a.m., wallow in Fitzgerald’s brooding idea that “in a real dark night of the soul it is always three o’clock in the morning, day after day.” Then we turn over and struggle back to sleep. Except for Bill Spawr. For Spawr, a trainer for more than 40 of his 77 years, by 3 a.m. he is well into a bright new working day, already prowling his stable, peering into the stalls of sleepy headed Thoroughbreds, deciding who gets to do what and when. Until this month. As of Monday, Spawr was halfway through a 30-day suspension levied by the California Horse Racing Board for a 56-picogram overage of the legal therapeutic medication clenbuterol found in the post-race urine sample of the 4-year-old filly Skye Diamonds after her second place finish to the classy Vale Dori in the Adoration Stakes at Santa Anita last May 7. (A picogram is one-trillionth of a gram, which prompts a whole different discussion... ...

Gulfstream Park Partially Evacuated

By Thoroughbred Daily News HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 8, 2017) — With Hurricane Irma bearing down on the Florida coast, Gulfstream officials have ordered the evacuation of the barns they felt were most vulnerable to damage from the storm. According to Bill Badgett Jr., a member of the upper management team at the track, about 750 horses have already left the track. Trainers were given the option of either sending them to Ocala or to Palm Meadows. The barns that were evacuated were the ones closest to the backstretch entrance on Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Not only are they the oldest barns on the Gulfstream backstretch but they are in a lower-lying area than other barns are more prone to flooding. “The good thing was there was so much notice in advance, we are able to jump on this thing before it got too bad,” Badgett said. “We started preparations a couple of days ago and we’ve gotten the horses out. On top of everything else, we’ve been dealing with a... ...

By DRF.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Sept. 4, 2017) — Miss Sunset will be sorry to see Del Mar end. Miss Sunset ($8.40) had won the Fleet Treat Stakes for California-bred 3-year-old fillies earlier in the meet on July 30, and last year she won a pair of races here, including the Generous Portion. In the CERF, she stepped out of both her comfort zones, moving into open company and against older competition. The result was the same, but with a slight tweak. Miss Sunset led from start to finish in the Fleet Treat, but this time she sat behind early pacesetter Rockport Babe, surged to the lead entering the lane, then held safe fellow Cal-bred Bad Ju Ju to win by a 1 3/4 lengths. Classy Tune, the even-money favorite off a... ...

Sam Houston Shelters Displaced Horses

By Bloodhorse.com HOUSTON, Tex. (Aug. 29, 2017) — So far the Texas Thoroughbred industry appears to have escaped the worst of Hurricane Harvey, which battered the Gulf Coast with damaging winds when it made landfall Aug. 25 and has since saturated the Houston area with a record 49 inches of contiguous rain. Sam Houston Race Park, which is located northwest of downtown Houston and adjacent to the Sam Houston Tollway, has not sustained any major damage or flooding, according to Roland Tamez, who is with the track’s security team. The track did not have any racehorses on the grounds when the storm hit because its live racing season ended in May. The barn area is now being used to provide free shelter for horses being evacuated out of flooded areas. Several horses had been sent to the track ahead of the storm because their owners had experienced flooding in the past. “We’ve got over 100 horses in three barns right now,” said Tamez, who added that anyone who needs shelter... ...

Barretts Yearling Sale on Tuesday

DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 25, 2017) – The Barretts select yearling sale, set for Tuesday afternoon, is being conducted during the Del Mar summer race meeting for the third time. The sale was held on a Saturday evening in 2015, and moved to Tuesday last year, giving the event its own position during race week. The 2016 sale showed modest increases in gross and average prices compared to 2015, but a decline in median price. The sale will never be a marathon event – stall restrictions limit the event to about 80 head – but there is hope among sale executives that the quality of yearlings has improved. “Last year, we were a step up not only because of the change in the day but the local breeders have supplied us with exciting prospects,” Barretts general manager Kim Lloyd said. Lloyd said the yearlings in Tuesday’s sale were selected in the spring. “We’ll see how they developed over the summer,” Lloyd said. “We’ve heard good reports. It’s a big difference,... ...

Within the last few days, somebody snapped up the name Path of Totality on the Jockey Club registry, reserving it for some unsuspecting foal of the future. Moon Shadow is already in use, although Umbra – Latin for “shadow” – remains available as of this writing, along with Baily’s Beads, the effect caused by light from the eclipsed sun peeking past the irregular edges of the moon’s surface. That morning on Steve Byk’s radio show, after chewing over the results of last Saturday’s Pacific Classic with Bob Baffert, the conversation landed on the recent death of Baffert’s friend Brad McKinzie, whose memorial service was schedule for noon that day. “He was like the fourth Baffert brother,” Baffert said. “And Mom always... ...

Breeders’ Cup Next for Skye Diamonds

By DRF.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 19, 2017) — California-bred Skye Diamonds, the dominant female sprinter in California this year, will not race again until Nov. 4 at Del Mar in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, a race in which she figures to be a leading candidate. Skye Diamonds won the Grade 2 Great Lady M. Stakes at Los Alamitos in July and the Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap on Aug. 13 at Del Mar. Trainer Bill Spawr said earlier this week that he would prefer to give Skye Diamonds a lengthy break between starts as opposed to adding a race at Santa Anita in October. “She’ll do well off that,” Spawr said of the break. “If we give her six weeks between races, she’s done well. She’s so professional.” Skye Diamonds, a 4-year-old filly by First Dude, has won 9 of 16 starts and earned $509,150. She has won 6 of 8 starts since being claimed for $40,000 last August, a span that includes the Dream of... ...

Tribalist Takes Stakes in Comeback

From DMTC Publicity DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 18, 2017) — Returning to competition after more than a year on the sidelines, six-year-old California-bred Tribalist overcame traffic trouble to rally late in the stretch and win Friday’s featured $105,070 Green Flash Handicap for older turf sprinters at Del Mar. Tribalist, running only his sixth race in a career interrupted by various physical infirmities, was shuffled back to last early in the five-furlong dash, found room to rally along the rail going to the far turn but then had to check in traffic under jockey Victor Espinoza. Finally locating room in the final furlong, the gelding responded generously to overhaul the gritty 25-1 longshot Gutsy Ruler in the shadow of the wire to win by a head in :56.93 for the distance. Gutsy Ruler, overlooked in the betting despite a triumph in his most recent race, August 6, was a half-length in front of 3-2 favored Richard’s Boy, with Jimmy Bouncer fourth in the field of eleven horses. DRF.com on Northern California Sale

By DRF.com PLEASANTON, Calif. (Aug. 11, 2017) — After declines in key categories in 2016, the Northern California sale of yearlings and horses of racing age on Tuesday at Pleasanton has a smaller look. In 2016, there were 240 horses in the catalog. This year, there were 151 as of Wednesday. “We’re hoping this will better meet the demand,” said Doug Burge, the president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. “Last year, we had too many horses for that market.” The smaller book was planned after last year’s sale saw a 32 percent decline in gross from 2015, to $1,028,200, and a 35 percent decline in the average price, to $7,560. The median price was $4,000, down from $7,500 in 2015. The leading horse of the 2016 sale was a City Zip colt who sold for $50,000. A few of the horses offered last year have shown talent this year. Take the One O One, bought for $47,000 at Pleasanton last summer, won a maiden race at Del Mar last... ...

Skye Diamonds Sharp in Rancho Bernardo

By Bloodhorse.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 13, 2017) – California-bred Skye Diamonds has earned $389,100 for owners Tom Acker, Allen Racing, Bloom Racing, and Jon Lindo since she was claimed for $40,000 at Del Mar last August. The latest installment was the $60,000 first-place purse from Sunday’s Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap for fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar. The prize money from the $100,000 race may not have been hefty, but there can be no doubt Skye Diamonds is rated among the top contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint here Nov. 4. Whether she starts again before that race was unclear in the immediate aftermath of the Rancho Bernardo. Instead, winning trainer Bill Spawr was focused on the style of her win, closing between rivals in the final three furlongs to win by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:15.95. Foal Crop Projected by Jockey Club

From The Jockey Club LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 12, 2017) — The Jockey Club is projecting a 2018 North American registered Thoroughbred foal crop of 21,500. The 21,500 foals estimated for 2018 is a 4.4% decrease from the 2017 foal crop projection of 22,500 that was announced in August 2016. “As always, this projection is based on reports of mares bred received to date, and we estimate that approximately 85% of those reports have been received,” said Matt Iuliano, The Jockey Club’s executive vice president and executive director. The foal crop projection, traditionally announced in mid-August, is computed by using Reports of Mares Bred (RMBs) received to date for the 2017 breeding season. RMBs are to be filed by August 1 of each breeding season. Additional foal crop information is available in The Jockey Club’s online fact book at jockeyclub.com/factbook.asp and in the online state fact books. Majestic Heat Repeats in Solana Beach

From DMTC Publicity DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 11, 2017) — For the second straight year, Majestic Heat and jockey Flavien Prat won the $150,000 Solana Beach Stakes, and for the second straight year they won the grass race for Golden State Series eligible fillies and mares by the slimmest of margins, a nose. Sent postward the 3-5 favorite, Majestic Heat was well-rated on the lead by Prat, shook off the stalking How Unusual in mid-stretch but then was pushed to the limit to barely resist the last-ditch challenge of the fast-closing Moonless Sky, piloted by Kent Desormeaux. The stewards conducted an inquiry after How Unusual was forced to take up by jockey Norberto Arroyo, Jr. when Moonless Sky came through an opening in pursuit of Majestic Heat. However, they ruled that the incident did not warrant a change in the placings. Streaking Summersimage wins Dupret Derby

By DRF.com SANTA ROSA, Calif. Maiden Continental Divide Graduates

By DRF.com and DMTC Publicity DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 6, 2017) — Continental Divide rallied widest of all to win the first race of his career in Saturday’s $101,035 Graduation Stakes for Golden State Series eligible 2-year-old sprinters at Del Mar, a distance well short of what trainer Jim Cassidy hopes will be his ideal trip. The style of the win left Cassidy impressed that a colt by Animal Kingdom, who won both the Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup at 1 1-4 miles earlier this decade, could be effective at 5 1-2 furlongs on dirt. “He wants to go farther,” Cassidy said. “For him to go 5 1-2, you try him out of his element and he still wins.” Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Continental Divide ($9.20) was timed in 1:05.27, and finished three-quarters of a length in front of 3-1 Smokem. Drizzy, the 3-1 favorite, closed from last of nine to finish third, 3 1-2 lengths behind the winner. Espinoza said he was confident Continental Divide could handle a... ...
