Joe Parker

By Emily Shields Twenty years ago Joe Parker served as president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association and president of California Thoroughbred Sales. Though his political days are long behind him and his booming insurance business takes up most of his time, Parker has not strayed far from his original goal of breeding and selling Thoroughbreds. Masochistic Sizzles in Final Workout

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2015) — Trainer Ron Ellis could only shake his head with a slight grin after watching Masochistic’s final Santa Anita Park workout Oct. 25 before shipping to Keeneland for a run in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I). He had decided earlier to not have jockey Mike Smith—who will ride the Sought After gelding in the Sprint—aboard for the work, so the notoriously speedy 5-year-old wouldn’t run too fast. But, even with exercise rider Baltazar Contreras up, Masochistic did what he always does—run fast. Ellis timed his five-furlong drill in :58 flat and Santa Anita’s clockers officially had him in :58 2/5. The gelding’s ears were pricked the entire time and appeared to breeze the distance with ease. “He would have gone :56 if Mike Smith was on him,” Ellis said. “He went off nice and relaxed, but he was smokin’. That’s as easy as a horse can do it.” Ellis admits it’s a legitimate challenge to prepare a horse like Masochistic, who is... ...

By Bloodhorse.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Oct. 13, 2015) — It was hard to tell who was happier Oct. 13 when California Chrome returned to Los Alamitos Race Course—trainer Art Sherman or the 4-year-old colt himself. As the truck and trailer carrying the chestnut colt turned into view at the Cypress, Calif., racetrack, the 78-year-old trainer could hardly contain himself. “Uh oh,” Sherman said, breaking into a version of Richard Wagner’s ‘Ride of the Valkyries.’ “Here we go. It feels like a Rocky movie.” California Chrome responded in kind, bellowing out a loud neigh as he approached the Sherman barn and playfully peeking out of the trailer window to get a good look at the home he left March 17. It’s been a long road back to the Golden State, where California Chrome was bred by owners Perry Martin and Steve Coburn (Coburn’s share has since been acquired by Taylor Made Stallions). A second-place finish in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) March 28 was followed by well-documented and controversial voyage to England,... ...

Lou Neve

By Emily Shields Louis Neve falls somewhere between eternal optimist and realistic businessman. That is why Neve pushed through the economic crisis of 2008, staying involved in horse racing and breeding while many in California were shuttering their barns. He adopted his racing philosophy from his commercial cut flower business: “If you don’t do well with one crop, there’s always another crop coming up behind it.” With this kind of confidence and due to his perseverance, Neve has watched his racing empire blossom. This summer he enjoyed one winner after another, including a spectacular three-win day with California-breds on Aug. 21. Before he ever pursued a longtime dream of owning and breeding horses, Neve was focused on his 40-year-old flower business. “We grow primarily hypochromic roses,” he explained, “which I’ve been doing for 40 years. The business is family-owned and in its third generation. I always enjoyed horse racing and had a dream of breeding horses, but it wasn’t until 2004 that I bought a Smokester filly privately.” On one... ...

Feed Recall Issued

By Paulick Report Western Milling of Goshen, Calif., issued a voluntary recall for their Western Blend Horse Feed because of possible monensin contamination. Last week, three horses died and dozens became ill at Black Fence Farm in Fresno County. It’s believed that the horses became ill from the feed they consumed. The FDA has not yet confirmed this suspicion. The recall affects LOT 5251, manufactured on September 8, 2015. The feed was distributed to stores in California and Arizona in September. There are 1,100 bags being recalled, and all but 67 bags have already been reclaimed by Western Milling. The FDA states that clinical signs of ionophore poisoning in horses can vary depending on the amount ingested, but symptoms can include poor appetite, weakness, rapid heart rate, labored breathing, depression, colic, sweating, recumbency, and sudden death. The first clinical symptoms of exposure to an ionophore like monensin are often noted between 12 and 72 hours after the horse has ingested contaminated feed; if the horse recovers, permanent cardiac damage is... ...
