CYPRESS, Calif. (Apr. 18, 2022) — The $100,000 Bertrando Stakes for California-breds is one of three stakes races scheduled for the Los Angeles County Fair meet at Los Alamitos.
The Bertrando is for 3-year-olds & up bred or sired in California. The one-mile race – which honors the multiple graded stakes winner, champion older male of 1993 and champion California stallion – will be run Saturday, June 25.
The 10-day season is scheduled to begin Friday, June 24 and continue through Sunday, July 10. Racing will be conducted Friday-Sunday opening weekend (June 24-26) and the final week (July 8-10) and Friday-Monday (July 1-4) the middle week. The Monday July 4 program is a special holiday card and will include a handicapping contest with two berths in the 2023 NTRA National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas on the line. Post time will be 1 p.m. each day.
The richest event on the calendar is the Grade II, $200,000-guaranteed  Great Lady M. Stakes for fillies & mares at 6 ½ furlongs. Captured by heavily-favored Gamine in 2021, the Great Lady M. will be offered Monday, July 4.
Besides Gamine, the six other winners of the Great Lady M. at Los Alamitos are Doinghardtimeagain (2014), Fantastic Style (2015), Eclipse Award winner Finest City (2016), Skye Diamonds (2017), Marley’s Freedom (2018-2019) and Sneaking Out (2020).

Before Classier, the Derby was won by Shared Belief (2014), Gimme Da Lute (2015), Accelerate (2016), eventual 3-year-old champion West Coast (2017), Once On Whiskey (2018), Game Winner (2019) and Uncle Chuck (2020).
