ARCADIA, Calif. (June 21, 2018)–Long-time racegoers know that racing’s chart books are chock-full of well-related full and half siblings that simply couldn’t run. That can no longer be said about Faversham, a chestnut full brother to two-time Horse of the Year and four-time Eclipse Champion California Chrome, as Faversham, ridden by Tiago Pereira, rallied from off the pace to take Thursday’s fifth race at Santa Anita by 3 ¼ lengths, thus breaking his maiden in his sixth career start. Conditioned by Art Sherman, who gained worldwide fame as the trainer of the aforementioned 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, Faversham got a flat mile on turf in 1:36.26.
“He has all kinds of talent,” said Sherman. “He had a horse fall in front of him a couple races back and it’s been tough to calm him down…I’m hoping that by winning this race the way he did, he can relax better and run to his potential.”
When asked if Faversham, who is owned Perry and Denise Martin, who are also co-owners of California Chrome, would continue to race on turf, Sherman said, “Yes. There are a lot of races on the grass at Del Mar and we’ll keep him there.”
Sixth, beaten 15 lengths going a mile and one sixteenth on dirt May 12, Faversham was off at 17-1 in a field of 10 maidens three and up and paid $36.40, $14.00 and $7.80.
A 3-year-old ridgling by Lucky Pulpit out of Love the Chase, by Not For Love, Faversham picked up $35,400 for the win, increasing his earnings to $61,690. A well beaten ninth in his only previous turf start here two starts back on April 27, Faversham is now 6-1-2-0.
Seventh after the first half mile, Faversham was on the move around the far turn and was third turning for home en route to an authoritative victory.
Fractions on the race were 23.02, 46.32, 1:11.14 and 1:23.75.
