An $8,000 claim by trainer Adam Kitchingman for owner Cody Polansky Oct. 6, Scathing rallied to win the $17,535 starter allowance by 1 ½ lengths in her second start for her current connections. Scathing, who has won five of 22 and earned $70,341, had to pass a respiratory exam before being cleared to race.  Fortunately, Kitchingman’s San Luis Rey stable wasn’t badly affected by the fire, which destroyed eight barns and killed a reported 46 horses. Her status remains “critical” according to the hospital and her doctors have indicated that it will be at least several more days before any decisions can be made about further treatments. Bellocq and her husband, Pierre, Jr., had six horses at the San Diego North County facility. Four of them are known to have been rescued. CHRB spokesman Mike Marten said Saturday morning that state officials “are confident” in the figure, but made sure to note that a small number of horses broke through a “knockdown fence” at the facility during the fire and are still unaccounted for. Those horses are believed to be still loose in the hills surrounding San Luis Rey in Bonsall, Calif., but Marten could not confirm the number of horses that are unaccounted for. In a phone interview, Winner said the number of horses lost cannot be immediately known because so many runners were taken to different farms in the area, sent to Del Mar, or perished in barn fires at San Luis Rey Downs. “We don’t know how many yet,” Winner said. “The estimates are above 40 to 42, I think. (Dec. 8, 2017) — Del Mar’s backstretch area has provided safe haven for more than 800 horses escaping a wind-blown, fast-moving fire that ripped through the North County area of San Diego Thursday. The first group of horses arrived at the Del Mar Fairgrounds late Thursday afternoon and vans continued to flow in throughout the night. By Friday morning more than 800 head – both Thoroughbreds and other breeds — had been bedded down in the 40-plus barns located on the grounds that are capable of holding as many as 1,600 horses. Other animals, including goats and pigs, also were brought on board to the 350-acre Fairgrounds. (Dec. 8, 2017) — Trainer Martine Bellocq suffered second- and third-degree burns over 50% of her body while trying to rescue her horses during the Dec. 7 fire at San Luis Rey Training Center in Bonsall, Calif. Bellocq’s brother-in-law, Remi Bellocq, reported Dec. 8 that Martine was air-lifted to UC San Diego Medical Center where she is being treated for the burns. Doctors have put her in an induced coma as they treat her. “She’s in intensive care right now,” Remi Bellocq said Friday morning. He added that doctors examined Martine’s lungs and found no significant damage. (Dec. 4, 2017) – Perennial leading sire Unusual Heat and longtime Los Alamitos Race Course executive Brad McKinzie have been elected into the California Hall of Fame and will be inducted posthumously at the annual meeting and awards banquet of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association, to be held February 12, 2018, in the Chandelier Room at Santa Anita Park. Unusual Heat, a six-time leading stallion in California, passed away in May due to complications of arthritis-induced laminitis at the age of 27. McKinzie, a 30-year Los Alamitos executive and co-founder of Finish Line Self Insurance, died in August from renal carcinoma at the age of 62. DEL MAR, Calif. (Nov. 26, 2017) – Hall of Fame jockey Alex Solis announced his retirement on Sunday. Solis, 53, said his decision was based on a slow recovery from August hip replacement surgery and the desire to spend time with his family, including two grandchildren. Solis was elected to the Racing Hall of Fame in 2015. He retired with 5,035 races won and horses he rode earned more than $238 million, 10th on the all-time list. Solis, a native of Panama, won three Breeders’ Cup races and the 2004 Dubai World Cup aboard Pleasantly Perfect, but told TVG that not winning a Kentucky Derby was his greatest career disappointment. The California-bred son of his own stallion Grazen, Tough Sunday was born with symptoms of what is known as dummy foal syndrome; the colt could not see or hear, and he had no nursing instinct. In recent years Beverly Lewis served on the board of the Edwin J. Gregson Foundation, which works to assist backstretch employees and their families. (Sept. 17, 2017) — Helen “Penny” Chenery, owner of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, who became a well-loved figure in her own right as a champion of Thoroughbreds and women in business and sports, died on Saturday, Sept.16, in her Colorado home following complications from a stroke. She was 95. Penny’s children announced her death through Leonard Lusky, her longtime friend and business partner. Following Secretariat’s retirement from racing, Penny became an ambassador for Thoroughbred racing and remained so even after the champion’s death in 1989. She served as the first female president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) and president of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. She became one of the first women admitted to The Jockey Club, helped found the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) and created the Secretariat Vox Populi Award annually honoring racing’s most popular horse, as well as the Secretariat Foundation, which assists and supports various charities within the racing community. Spiced Perfection, a daughter of Smiling Tiger out of the Pleasantly Perfect mare Perfect Feat, was bred by Premier Thoroughbreds and trained by Brian Koriner. A daughter of Bodemeister  brought a record $300,000, while an Unusual Heat filly sold for $200,000. The third six-figure horse was the sale’s top-priced colt, a son of Mucho Macho Man  for $120,000. A total of 53 horses grossed $2,177,000 for an average of $41,075 and a median of $32,000. The average rose 10% over the 2016 average of $37,174. The buy-back rate was 34%, with 27 of the 80 horses through the ring not sold. “I was very pleased all the way through, from when we started our selections through showing,” said Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts. “It was busy and we had traffic every day. SHAKOPEE, Minn. (Aug. 26, 2017) – Multiple stakes winning California-bred Patriots Rule went from last to first to win Saturday’s $50,000 Brooks Fields Stakes at Canterbury Park. Patriots Rule is by Tribal Rule, out of the Seattle Bound mare Candy Factory, was bred by Dahlberg Farms, is owned by Charles Garvey and trained by Robertino Diodoro. He has eight wins in 31 starts, earnings of $496,773 and was coming off a second in a July 27 optional claimer. Skye Diamonds won the Grade 2 Great Lady M. Stakes at Los Alamitos in July and the Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap on Aug. 13 at Del Mar. Trainer Bill Spawr said earlier this week that he would prefer to give Skye Diamonds a lengthy break between starts as opposed to adding a race at Santa Anita in October. “She’ll do well off that,” Spawr said of the break. “If we give her six weeks between races, she’s done well. Tribalist, running only his sixth race in a career interrupted by various physical infirmities, was shuffled back to last early in the five-furlong dash, found room to rally along the rail going to the far turn but then had to check in traffic under jockey Victor Espinoza. Finally locating room in the final furlong, the gelding responded generously to overhaul the gritty 25-1 longshot Gutsy Ruler in the shadow of the wire to win by a head in :56.93 for the distance. (Aug. 15, 2017) – A filly by leading California first-crop stallion Smiling Tiger brought a sale-topping $70,000 and a Lucky Pulpit colt from the same family sold for $50,000 at Tuesday’s 2017 Northern California Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. The high-bid yearling is out of the Cee’s Tizzy mare Mulberry Lane. She was bred and consigned by Harris Farms. The second-highest priced sale was also bred and consigned by Harris Farms. That son of Lucky Pulpit, sire of champion California Chrome, is out of the stakes-winning Talkin Man mare Aspen Gal, who also is the second dam of the sale-topper. Both yearlings were purchased by Del Secco DCS, Inc., of Hayward. The top consignor by gross sales was Harris Farms, with eight horses sold for $149,900.
