(Jan. 12, 2014) — The five stakes races on the Sunshine Millions/California Cup card for Jan. 25 at Santa Anita, restricted to horses bred or sired in California, drew a total of 113 nominations. The richest races will be the $250,000 Cal Cup Derby and the $250,000 Cal Cup Turf Classic, presented by City National Bank. The Derby’s 18 nominations include Grade I winner Tamarando and stakes winners California Chrome and Aotearoa. The Turf Classic’s 27 nominations include multiple graded winner Summer Hit. The 26 nominations for the $200,000 Cal Cup Oaks for 3-year-old fillies include multiple stakes winner Swiss Lake Yodeler, while the $125,000 Cal Cup Sprint includes stakes winner Cyclometer and graded stakes winner Rousing Sermon among its 16 nominees. The $125,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint’s 26 nominations include multiple stakes winner Warren’s Veneda.
