ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 27, 2023)—Shortening up out of a pair of turf routes, trainer Peter Miller’s California-bred Daddysruby led throughout and registered a resounding 5 ¼ length victory in Friday’s $63,000 Santa Anita allowance feature. With Juan Hernandez collecting his second win of the day, the 3-year-old filly by Frac Daddy got six furlongs in 1:09.56.
Breaking sharply from the rail, Daddysruby was quickly on terms with 7-5 favorite Report and took command leaving the five furlong pole without being sent. With a one length advantage three furlongs from home, Daddysruby opened up by three furlongs an eighth of a mile out and won geared down in what certainly appeared to be the best race of her young career.
“She’s always shown a lot of talent, but I didn’t think she had that kind of speed,” said Miller. “But she broke sharp and Juan just kind of inherited the lead and took it to ’em. We’re very pleased. She’s a Cal-bred in open company today, so it’s nice. She’s a good little filly so hopefully, we can have a lot of fun with her.”
A winner of her six furlong debut on synthetic Tapeta when trained by Tim McCanna at Golden Gate Fields on Jan. 7, she was sold privately and took a first condition allowance at six furlongs in her first start for Miller here on March 11.
A subsequent one mile turf winner against statebreds on Aug. 4 at Del Mar, Daddysruby showed brief speed against open company going a mile and one sixteenth on Sept. 3, but she tired to finish fourth as the even money favorite.
The second choice today at 5-2 in a field seven fillies and mares, five of which were not bred in California, Daddysruby paid $7.40, $3.60 and $2.80.
Owned by breeder Jethorse, LLC, Wachtel Stable and Gary Barber, Daddysruby, who is out of the You and I mare Youtheprizeandi, picked up $49,140–$11,340 of which is from the California-bred incentive fund.
Ridden for the third time in a row by Hernandez, Daddysruby now has four wins from five starts.
Ridden by Hector Berrios, Report, who broke from the far outside, simply could not go with the winner and finished second, one length in front of Jensco and paid $3.00 and $2.60.
The third choice in the wagering at 7-2, Jensco, who was ridden by Antonio Fresu, paid $2.80 to show while besting Kristi’s Tiger by 2 ½ lengths.
Fractions on the race were 21.88, 44.70 and 56.90.
