ARCADIA, Calif. (June 23, 2019)–California-bred Eddie Haskell overcame self-inflicted trouble to recover and win Saturday’s $75,000 Siren Lure Stakes by three quarters of a length while covering five furlongs on the Santa Anita turf in 55.45. Trained by Mark Glatt and ridden by Kent Desormeaux, the 6-year-old Square Eddie gelding now has eight wins from 11 tries going five furlongs on grass.
Breaking from the rail in a field of five horses three and up, Eddie Haskell seized the bit and drug Desormeaux into a precariously close position off the heels of pacesetter and eventual runner-up What’sontheagenda heading to the far turn, but Desormeaux was able to wrangle him back and had clear sailing with three lengths to make up turning for home.
“I was a little bit worried about the one hole and you could see Kent had his hands full there heading into the turn,” said Glatt, who has now won six out of his 10 starts with “Eddie” since claiming him for $50,000 on April 26, 2018. “When he got clear and he got him to running again, I thought he’d have the other horse (What’sontheageda) measured.”
A winner over the course of the Grade III Daytona Stakes on May 25, Eddie Haskell, who is out of the Boston Harbor mare Teresa Ann, was off as the 1-5 favorite and paid $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10.
Owned by Philip J. Wood and Jim Hailey and bred by Reddam Racing, Eddie Haskell now has nine wins from 21 overall starts and with the winner’s share of $60,000 ($13,500 of which is from the Cal-bred incentive fund), he increased his earnings to $493,107.
“There were some anxious moments from the quarter pole to the about the eighth pole where the leader was going as fast as me…,” said Desormeaux. “He sustained his kick and that made the difference. ‘Eddie’ won the race…He responds so well to my hand gestures and when I encourage him to go, he just explodes.”
Ridden by Agapito Delgadillo, What’sontheagenda finished 3 ¼ lengths in front of Brandothebartender. Off at 3-1, What’sontheagenda paid $2.60 and $2.10.
Brandothebartender was off at 13-1 with Joe Talamo and paid $2.40 to show.
Fractions on the race were 21.95 and 43.88.
