CYPRESS, Calif. (Sept. 9, 2021) – Galilean, a triple stakes winner at Los Alamitos, Desmond Doss, who captured the Bertrando Stakes earlier this year, and Northern California Yearling Sale graduate Big Fish top the field in the $75,000 E. B. Johnston Stakes Sunday.
Restricted to 3-year-olds & up bred or sired in California, the one-mile Johnston is the eighth of nine races on the third day of the Los Angeles County Fair meet at Los Alamitos. Post time Sunday is 1 p.m. and scheduled post time for the Johnston is 4:28 p.m.
Bred by Bar C Racing Stables, trained by John Sadler and owned by West Point Thoroughbreds, Denise Baker and William Sandbrook, Galilean is undefeated at Los Alamitos. The son of Uncle Mo won the Barretts Juvenile in his career debut during the 2018 Los Angeles County Fair meet, then returned later in the year to win the King Glorious. Both of those victories were for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.
The 5-year-old, who is out of the El Prado mare Fresia, was a four-length winner of the Soi Phet in 2020 in his third start for Sadler.
Off the board in a pair of turf races at Del Mar in his first two starts of 2021, Galilean has won six of 15 lifetime and banked $588,022.
A 5-year-old son of Grazen and the Malek mare Malley Girl, Desmond Doss has won five of 15 and earned $289,591 for owner-breeder Nick Alexander and trainer Steve Miyadi.
Ninth of 10 in the grassy California Dreamin’ Stakes July 25 at Del Mar, the gray will be seeking his second score in as many attempts at Los Alamitos. He was a half-length winner of the Bertrando June 26.
Bred by DP Racing, owned by KAM Racing Stables and Brent Malmstrom and trained by Jonathan Wong, Tom’s Surprise, who was second at 27-1 in the Bertrando in his lone try on dirt, has won four of 11. The 4-year-old Tom’s Tribute gelding out of the Henrythenavigator mare Birthday Surprise has earned $91,250.
Formerly named Royal Trump, Peaceful Transfer is 1-for-1 under his new name. The 6-year-old Ministers Wild Cat gelding won an optional claimer at the Johnston distance June 26 at Los Alamitos.
Bred by Mr. & Mrs. Larry Williams, owned by Steve McCanne and trainer Bob Hess, Jr., Peaceful Transfer, who is out of the Woodman mare Royal Woodman, has won seven of 28 and banked $265,592.
Away since finishing fourth of six in the Thor’s Echo Stakes June 12, Loud Mouth will seek his first win beyond seven furlongs in the Johnston. Bred by Tommy Town Thoroughbreds, owned by Thomsen Racing LLC and trained by Steve Knapp, the 5-year-old son of Boisterous and the Tale of the Cat mare Drama Cat has won seven of 28 and earned $332,070.
Loud Mouth was fourth, six lengths behind Galilean in the Soi Phet last year in his most recent start at Los Alamitos.
Bred by George Krikorian, trained by David Hofmans and owned by Legacy Ranch Inc., Big Fish will be making his first start since winning the California Cup Derby on Jan. 16.
A son of Mr. Big and the Into Mischief mare Perched, the 3-year-old gelding has won three of eight and earned $228,018. He was a $40,000 purchase at the Northern California Yearling Sale.
