LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 10, 2022) — Stakes-winning California-bred mare Lakerball  entered the ring with a special announcement Feb. 9 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale—100% of the proceeds of her sale would go to Shepherd’s House, a recovery program in Lexington.

Lakerball, consigned as Hip 354 by James Keogh’s Grovendale consignment, hammered at $35,000. The broodmare prospect was purchased by Randwick Bloodstock Agency.

“Just very, very pleased with her. Shepherd’s House is doing great work in downtown Lexington and they’re a yearlong treatment program and they’re having amazing success,” Keogh said, “so I think it behooves all of us to support them a little bit. I’ve had several friends that have gone through the program and done really, really well because of it. It’s just something that I really have a heart for.

“I’m thrilled and delighted that she sold that well.”

Shepherd’s House focuses on creating an atmosphere conducive to recovery and establishing fellowship that will lead to a successful reentry into the community, the program’s website notes.

A California-bred 6-year-old mare by Lakerville, Lakerball won the Surfer Girl Stakes and Pike Place Dancer Stakes at 2 on her way to earnings of $185,481. She was bred by Rancho de Los Aviadores out of the Capsized mare Category Ten, a half-sister to grade 1 winner and millionaire Ultra Blend and to the dam of 2021 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) winner Dr. Schivel
