Longtime Horseman Richard Tate Passes

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 24, 2020) — Longtime horseman Richard Tate passed away over the weekend in Sheridan, Wy, according to former California Thoroughbred Breeders Association director Daniel Schiffer.

Tate worked for the Schiffer family at Galway Downs and then for Mel Stute on the Southern California racing circuit before taking out his trainer’s license. He trained in Montana and at Denver’s Arapahoe Park before setting up a stable at Golden Gate.

Tate trained the California-bred Summer Sale to win the Hollywood Turf Express over Answer Do. He also trained Cal-bred Arvada for The Hat Ranch.
