CYPRESS, Calif. (Sept. 6, 2015) — The second Fall Meet at Los Alamitos will begin Thursday, Sept. 10.
The 10-day season will continue through Friday, Sept. 25 with racing conducted on a Thursday-Sunday basis the first two weeks before concluding with action Thursday, Sept. 24 and Friday, Sept. 25. Post time will be 2 p.m.
There has been one adjustment to the stakes schedule. The inaugural Contender Stakes, which is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13, has been shortened from one mile to six furlongs and the purse is $75,000 rather than $100,000.
The Contender is one of three stakes during the meet for 2-year-olds joining the $100,000 Barretts Debutante for fillies at 6 ½ furlongs (Saturday, Sept. 19) and the $100,000 Barretts Juvenile at 6 ½ furlongs (Sunday, Sept. 20).
Remaining stakes races on the calendar are the $75,000 E. B. Johnston Stakes at one mile for 3-year-olds & up either bred or sired in California (Saturday, Sept. 12) and the $75,000 Beverly J. Lewis for 3-year-old fillies at 6 ½ furlongs. The Lewis is the main event on opening day (Sept. 10).
A newly-created Starter Showdown Series – with purses totaling $175,000 – will be offered during the upcoming season. The Series, which will be run Sept. 25, consists of five races – varying in distance from 5 ½ furlongs to one mile – for horses eligible for $8,000, $16,000 and $25,000 starter allowance contests.
The richest of those races is the $45,000 Seal Beach Stakes for 3-year-olds & up at six furlongs.
Track gates – including the Clubhouse and Vessels Club – will open at 9:30 a.m. General parking is free with grandstand admission $3 – $2 for seniors 62 and older.
The wagering menu includes the Pick Six, a pair of Pick 4’s – races 2-5 and the final four races – as well as the extremely popular Players’ Pick 5 – a 50-cent minimum wager with a reduced 14% takeout rate offered on the first five races.
