Marianne Millard, Melair’s Co-breeder, Passes

SAN JACINTO, Calif. (Apr. 12, 2022) – Marianne Millard, co-breeder of unbeaten California champion Melair and owner of Here Tis Ranch, has passed away at the age of 91.

Millard and Bea Rous bred and raced Melair, the daughter of Debonair Roger out of the mare Melrose Nugget, who was trained by John Sadler and ridden by Patrick Valenzuela. Melair was a multiple graded winner who not only beat the boys, but defeated Preakness winner and fellow Cal-bred Snow Chief in the Grade II Silver Screen Handicap at Hollywood Park.

That would be Melair’s last race. She survived a bout with colic and was retired to the breeding shed. She passed away at age 16 and was buried at Millard’s Here Tis Ranch. Melair finished her racing career winning all five of her starts with earnings of $336,500. An annual Cal-bred stakes race is named in her honor.
