ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 11, 2015) – Dave McGlothlin, Jim & Pat Thompson, Fran’s Valentine and Nostalgia’s Star have been elected into the California Racing Hall of Fame by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association.
The winners will be inducted at the CTBA’s annual awards dinner, to be held Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, at the Westin Pasadena.
McGlothlin has been manager of the horse division at Harris Farms, which has tripled in physical size and quadrupled in equine population during his nearly four decades of service. The farm has produced more than 50 stakes horses, including double classic winner and Horse of the Year California Chrome.
Jim & Pat Thompson are synonymous with the operation of Ridgeley Farm in Hemet. Among the stakes-producing stallions that have stood there were Memo and Iam the Iceman. The newest stallion arrival is stakes winner He Be Fire N Ice.
Fran’s Valentine won several Cal-bred championships, along with 14 races and earnings of more than $1.3 million for trainer Joe Manzi and the Green Thumb Farm of auto paint magnate Earl Scheib. But she’s also known as the only Breeders’ Cup winner to be disqualified for interference in the inaugural Juvenile Fillies after finishing first at odds of 74-1. As a broodmare, she produced six winners from 10 foals, including With Anticipation, who won the Grade 1 Sword Dancer twice, the Grade 1 United Nations, and the Grade 1 Man o’ War, and earned over $2.6 million.
Nostalgia’s Star was bred by Mr. and Mrs. John C. Mabee, while for most of his racing career was owned by Maggie Robbins, Mary Jane Hinds, and Fred Duckett. Nostalgia’s Star was a Grade I winner that earned $2,154,827 on the track. Among his victories were the Grade I Strub Stakes, the Grade II Hawthorne-Budweiser Gold Cup and the Grade II Gallant Fox Handicap.
