ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 28, 2022) – California-bred Slow Down Andy, winner of the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity in December but only sixth of 10 in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes on Feb. 19 at Fair Grounds, will be pointed to the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes on April 9 at Keeneland, trainer Doug O’Neill said over the weekend.

The Blue Grass is one of the leading preps for the Kentucky Derby on May 7 at Churchill Downs.

Awake at Midnyte, third for O’Neill in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes on Feb. 19 at Fair Grounds, is being pointed to the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes on April 8 at Keeneland, a prep for the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on May 6 at Churchill Downs.

Slow Down Andy and Awake at Midnyte are owned by Paul and Zillah Reddam.

“Talking with Paul and Zillah, we thought the timing was good,” O’Neill said. “If you’re competitive in those spots, you’re battle-tested for the Derby and the Oaks. That’s kind of the thought process.”
