From Los Alamitos Publicity

CYPRESS, Calif. (June 28, 2018) —Soi Phet and three other horses who have won stakes at Los Alamitos are among the 19 nominations to the $100,000-guaranteed Bertrando.

The one-mile race for 3-year-olds & up bred or sired in California will be run for the fifth time Wednesday, July 4.

A 10-year-old gelding trained by Leonard Powell for Benowitz Family Trust, Mathilde Powell and Paul Viskovich, Soi Phet has won half of his eight starts at Los Alamitos and each victory has come in a stakes.

The son of Tizbud and the Siberian Summer mare Summer Jersey captured the inaugural Bertrando in 2014 prior to upsetting Masochistic in the Los Alamitos Mile two months later. His other local stakes successes came in the E.B. Johnston Stakes in 2016 and 2017.

A $16,000 claim more than five years ago at Hollywood Park, Soi Phet, who was a 47-1 upset winner of the Crystal Water on the Santa Anita turf in his most recent start May 20, has won 14 of 58 and banked $955,250. A win in the Bertrando will make the dark bay a millionaire.

The other nominees who have won stakes at Los Alamitos include Acceptance, who won the 2014 King Glorious, Ann Arbor Eddie, who prevailed in the 2016 King Glorious, and 2015 Bertrando winner Magic Mark.

Completing the list of noms are Alsatian, Avanti Bello, who was third behind Boozer and Soi Phet in the 2016 Bertrando, Brandothebartender, B Squared, who was runner-up, defeated by a head, in the Crystal Water, Continental Divide, 2017 Longacres Mile winner Gold Rush Dancer, Grazen Sky, Grecian Fire, Jay Makes Us Laugh, Make It a Triple, New Karma, Shades of Victory, Taman Guard, Violent Ridge and the maiden Writ Large.

Entries for the Bertrando will be taken Saturday, June 30.
