SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (Apr. 14, 2024) — California-bred Alotaluck, the runner-up to Kentucky Derby probable Stronghold in the Grade 3, $400,000 Sunland Park Derby, is getting about a month off, trainer Ty Garrett said Saturday. The horse last raced on April 7, and won the $125,000 Mine That Bird Derby by 2 1/2 lengths at Sunland.

“We turned him out yesterday,” Garrett said. “We’re going to give him like 30 days. We’ll let him tell us, then we’ll look for a spot.”

Garrett is racing at SunRay Park and following the meet his stable could base at either Canterbury or Arapahoe. Alotaluck is a California-bred whose dam, Colinda Dawn, won the Colorado Derby at Arapahoe.

Only One America, a California-bred who won the $125,000 Island Fashion for 3-year-old fillies on the same card as the Mine That Bird, will likely get some downtime, trainer Todd Fincher said.

“She might be due a little break,” he said.
