Stallion Atticus Passes at Age 27

SANTA YNEZ, Calif. (May 28, 2019) — California stallion Atticus, who sired progeny with earnings of more than $14.5 million, died of natural causes on Tuesday, Barton Thoroughbreds announced. He was 27.

The son of Nureyev was a Grade I-winning millionaire on the track who won or placed in six graded races at five different tracks and set the record for one mile of 1:31.89 in the 1997 Arcadia Handicap on the turf.

He sired more than 30 stakes performers, including Florida Derby winner High Fly, Group I champion Fantastic Story, California Cup Classic winner Lucky Primo and California Cup Mile winner Bruce’s Dream.
