Uzziel Wires Field in Santa Paula

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (April 11, 2014)—Longshot California-bred Uzziel took full advantage of her early speed and coasted to a stunning 42-1 front-end upset in Friday’s $75,000 Santa Paula Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, getting 6 ½ furlongs in 1:17.19 while providing Tyler Baze with his third win on the afternoon. Trained by Mike Puype and owned by her breeders, James and Tammy McKenney, Uzziel, a California-bred daughter of Harlington, won by a comfortable 2 ¼ lengths while besting eight rivals and providing the McKenney’s with their first-ever stakes victory. “This is our first-ever stakes win,” said James McKenney.  “We’ve been breeding horses for 10 years now and we’ve never really had much luck at Santa Anita.  You couldn’t believe how excited we are.  We’ve got a full sister to this filly who’s a yearling and we’ve got the mare (Pretti Woman, by Lord At War) in Florida to be bred back to Harlington.” Second-longest shot in the field, Uzziel set fractions of 21.78, 44.48 and 1:10.14.  She paid... ...

Los Alamitos Construction Approved

By DRF.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Apr. 11, 2014) — Los Alamitos is launching capital improvements to its grandstand and expanding stalls for Thoroughbreds in advance of its Thoroughbred meeting in July. Brad McKinzie, the general manager of the track’s Thoroughbred operation, said Thursday that Los Alamitos has received approval from the city of Cypress to begin the projects, which are expected to be completed in June. The track’s Thoroughbred meeting runs from July 3-13. A three-week Thoroughbred meeting will be held in December. The seasons are part of racing dates previously held by Hollywood Park, which closed last December. Construction of 200 stalls for Thoroughbreds will begin on property previously used as a maintenance yard for tractors and other heavy equipment. The receiving barn also will be remodeled. The new stalls will increase capacity for Thoroughbreds to 700. McKinzie said an additional 200 temporary stalls could be used closer to the July race meeting, bringing barn-area capacity for Thoroughbreds to 900 stalls. Approximately 500 Thoroughbreds who race at Santa Anita have... ...

Hovdey on Del Mar

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Apr. 10, 2014) — Del Mar president Joe Harper gazed westward at the expanse of his freshly laid turf course. In the distance, the familiar landmarks of Dog Beach, the Brigantine, and the AmTrak trestle were comforting sights, but beneath his feet was spread the new Bermuda grass, transferred only the week before from its growing fields in the desert. Harper looked down. “Grow,” he said. It will, although how fast depends upon how warm it gets in coastal San Diego County over the next three months and how the new turf responds to the various tricks of the growing trade employed by turf course superintendent Leif Dickinson. Dickinson knows he can’t fool Mother Nature, but he can negotiate a working arrangement. To that end he is using plastic turf “blankets” to cover areas of the course and retain warmth, along with environmentally friendly supplements to enhance growth rate. “It’s everything,” Dickinson said. “It’s water, it’s fertility, it’s nutrition, it’s adding the biology... ...

SportsNetwork.com on California Chrome

From SportsNetwork.com PHILADELPHIA, PA (Apr. 10, 2014) – Regardless of what happens in Saturday’s Arkansas Derby and Blue Grass Stakes, California Chrome will be the Kentucky Derby favorite after his scintillating performance in the Santa Anita Derby.California Chrome won for the fourth consecutive time with a 5 1/4-length score over Hoppertunity last Saturday at Santa Anita. It is surprising that the margin of victory was the smallest of the four, but it could have been a lot more if jockey Victor Espinoza pressured the son of Lucky Pulpit to run faster inside the final furlong. Still, the colt ran that eighth of a mile in 12 2/5 seconds, which is the fastest of all the Kentucky Derby contenders to date. The chestnut colt is by far and away the class of the 2014 3-year-old crop, so much so that the rest of the Kentucky Derby field (outside Bayern if he qualifies) will be running for second place. History is also behind the homebred. His trainer, Art Sherman, was the exercise... ...

Hovdey on Sherman and Gilchrist

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com Greg Gilchrist won’t be taking any credit for any part of the California Chrome fairy tale. The colt, now perched at the threshold of Kentucky Derby favoritism, has cleanly divorced himself from all traditional moorings to be what anthropologists might call sui generis, which is racetrack Latin for “what a freak.” And yet if Gilchrist, acting on behalf of Scott Sherwood’s Blinkers On Racing Stable partnership, had not gone to $30,000 to buy a filly by Not for Love at the second session of the Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training in May of 2008  . . . She would not have ended up in Northern California. She would not have won an $8,000 maiden claiming race for Blinkers On. She would not have been sold to Perry Martin and Steve Coburn, who met through Blinkers On. She would not have been bred to the $2,500 California stallion Lucky Pulpit. And she never would have dropped that white-trimmed chestnut who ended up in the care of... ...

Evening Jewel Goes to Rovenna

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Apr. 5, 2014) – With three furlongs remaining in Saturday’s $200,250 Evening Jewel Stakes at Santa Anita, jockey Victor Espinoza decided to challenge the competition aboard Rovenna. Rovenna was disputing the pace when Espinoza urged the filly clear. She responded to take a two-length lead and held it to the finish of the race over 6 1/2 furlongs for California-bred 3-year-old fillies. “I wanted to do that,” he said. “I wanted to beat everybody and take an advantage. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t.” Rovenna ($5) was timed in 1:15.55. She finished 2 3/4 lengths in front of Harlington’s Rose, who closed from fifth in the field of nine. Cause Ur My Babe, an 8-1 shot, finished third, followed by Sprouts, Princess Genevieve, Gouyen, Chati’s On Top, Sprague River, and Norastone. Rovenna set an early pace of 21.81 and 44.48 seconds. She has shown speed in the past, a tactic that Espinoza wanted to use on a track that played friendly to front-runners Saturday. “That’s... ...

DRF.com on Lucky Pulpit

By DRF.com If Rousing Sermon didn’t put California sire Lucky Pulpit in the consciousness of breeders, California Chrome sure has. Lucky Pulpit is a 13-year-old son of Pulpit, who stands at Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif., for the modest fee of $2,500. But great ones can come from anywhere, and California Chrome’s dominating win in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes has raised awareness in Lucky Pulpit, who was California’s leading freshman sire in 2010. On the racetrack, Lucky Pulpit won three of 22 starts, but the résumé includes a turf win at five furlongs in the Arlington Park Smile Stakes at age 4 and graded placings at 2 and 3. Lucky Pulpit was bred and raced by Larry and Marianne Williams, who still own him, along with his biggest winner. That would be Rousing Sermon, a multiple stakes winner of $710,092 out of Lucky Pulpit’s second crop. Rousing Sermon made it to the Kentucky Derby in 2012, finishing eighth behind winner I’ll Have Another. Now Lucky Pulpit has another... ...

Increased Security for Santa Anita Derby

From CHRB ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 27, 2014) – In an effort to safeguard the health and welfare of horses and riders, Santa Anita Park officials have announced they will provide round-the-clock surveillance of all horses entered in the Santa Anita Derby beginning 72 hours before the April 5 race. This security measure will be similar to that provided for 2013’s Derby and for the 2013 Breeders’ Cup in Arcadia. The California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) will also have an increased security presence on the backside of Santa Anita for Derby Day. In addition to the usual CHRB enforcement personnel at Santa Anita, additional investigators and safety stewards are being brought in from Sacramento and Los Alamitos. The added CHRB staffing will augment Santa Anita’s stakes race security, allowing for broad stable area coverage for the Derby program, which also includes the Santa Anita Oaks, and three other stakes on an 11-race card. The CHRB also plans to conduct out-of competition testing for those horses nominated to the Santa Anita Derby,... ...

California Chrome to Santa Anita Derby

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 19, 2014)  – California Chrome, the easy winner of the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 8, is being prepared for the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 5. Trainer Art Sherman said Wednesday that the Santa Anita Derby over 1 1/8 miles gives California Chrome an important prep for the Triple Crown races. After the San Felipe, Sherman said he was considering skipping the Santa Anita Derby and going straight to the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 3. “I’m looking toward the Santa Anita Derby,” Sherman said. “We’ll give it a shot and we’ll see where we’re at.” Sherman said California Chrome needed a few extra days to recover from the 1 1/16-mile San Felipe, which the colt won by 7 1/4 lengths for his fourth career stakes win and first in a graded stakes. “He’s picked his head up a little bit,” Sherman said. “It took him a good week to start acting like his old self. Tribal Spy Wins Irish O’Brien

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 15, 2014) – Tribal Spy really did have the luck of the Irish on her side in the $100,500 Irish O’Brien Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita. She was one of two horses in the race seemingly with early speed, but when Ciao Bella Luna got off absolutely last in the field of seven, Tribal Spy found herself with an uncontested lead, and she nursed it all the way to the wire to win the downhill turf sprint for California-bred females. Tribal Spy ($10.40) got away with soft fractions – for the downhill course — of 22.36 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.75 for a half-mile while covering the about 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:12.59 to give jockey Irving Orozco his first stakes win. Tribal Spy held on to win by one length over an unlucky Ciao Bella Luna, who bravely got back into contention and fought on along the rail through the lane. Media Turn Out for California Chrome

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 14, 2014) — Plans for California Chrome’s next race are still on hold but that hasn’t diminished interest in the California-bred colt one whit. When it comes to gaining mainstream recognition, he may not be in Silky Sullivan’s league yet, but he’s getting there. The son of Lucky Pulpit, smashing winner of his last three starts, including the Grade II San Felipe Stakes last Saturday, is on the fast track to the May 3 Kentucky Derby after earning 50 qualifying points by winning the San Felipe. “We just had Channel 8 from San Diego and ESPN here and I’ve done nine radio interviews,” trainer Art Sherman said Thursday morning by phone from his headquarters at Los Alamitos. “I don’t know why he’s so popular, but there’s a ton of interest in him.” As to whether he would run in the Grade I, $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 5, Sherman said, “It’s too early to know right now. Marks Mine Captures Camilla Urso

By SFGate.com ALBANY, Calif. (Mar. 15, 2014) — It’s always advantageous for a horse to possess natural speed, but sometimes you need some grit, too, which is how Marks Mine won the $59,400 Camilla Urso Stakes on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields. Marks Mine, the even-money favorite, broke from the No. 5 post position under Frank Alvarado in the 6-furlong race for fillies and mares. Fellow front-runner Fast and Fury, ridden by Leslie Mawing, broke from the outside slot in the field of eight. “I told Frank to back off if the eight goes, and he tried to do that, but the eight backed off, too, so he was stuck on the inside,” winning trainer Steve Specht said. “I was a little concerned that it would soften her up for someone else from behind, but she digs in and gives you what she’s got.” Marks Mine disposed of Fast and Fury at the top of the stretch and spurted to a two-length lead, but just as Specht feared, Happybirthdaybaby and jockey Russell Baze... ...

Hovdey on Stulls

Their name is on the product, with a lot of talented people in the mix. And yet there is no guarantee of a happy ending. On the contrary, such endeavors fail miserably far more often than they succeed. They are also running a horse in a Grade 1 race. Jerardi on California Chrome

By Dick Jerardi, DRF.com Sometimes, you know in November. Many years, it is April, or even Kentucky Derby Week. You see a horse and say, “That is the one.” Given that I am in the middle of chasing basketballs around the country, I will admit that I had not seen a single one of California Chrome’s races until I fired up my laptop to watch the San Felipe Stakes last Saturday. It was disappointing to see that Bayern had to be scratched after those two dazzling wins, but I was looking forward to seeing Midnight Hawk, who I thought had run a very impressive third behind Candy Boy in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes. I thought he would improve off that race. Well, Midnight Hawk did improve and still got crushed. [ROAD TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY: Prep races, point standings, replays] California Chrome absolutely flew out of the gate to clear the field instantly. But jockey Victor Espinoza obviously knew what he had under him, so he just let the... ...

Breaking like a shot from the number two post position as the 7-5 favorite in a field of six 3-year-olds, the Art Sherman-conditioned California Chrome was quickly in-hand around the Club House turn with second choice Midnight Hawk to his outside and was full himself through splits of 23.09, 45.55, 1:09.45 and 1:35.94. “He ran like I expected him to,” said Espinoza.  “I wanted to try something new today, so I let him go right out of the gate.  I don’t know if people expected me to go right to the lead, but I wanted to let him enjoy his... ...

DRF.com on California Chrome

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. – California Chrome is training at a place known for horses that run a quarter-mile, but on Saturday at Santa Anita he ran like a horse who wants every part of 1 1/4 miles. California Chrome crushed his rivals in the Grade 2, $300,000 San Felipe Stakes, a major prep for 3-year-olds for both the Santa Anita Derby and the Kentucky Derby. Under the system used by Churchill Downs to determine the field for the May 3 Derby, California Chrome earned 50 points, which should be enough to make the maximum field of 20. If that happens, he will be the first horse to run in the 1 1/4-mile Derby who trains at Los Alamitos, which became California Chrome’s home after he was displaced by the closure of Hollywood Park. Los Alamitos is primarily a track for Quarter Horse racing, but has taken on an important role for Thoroughbreds on this circuit. Art Sherman, who trains California Chrome, joked that California Chrome’s alert start on Saturday... ...

Hovdey on California Chrome

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Mar. 5, 2014) — One of the prime items on the dinner menu of the Vessels Club at Los Alamitos Race Course is Art Sherman’s Petite Filet, Lobster and Shrimp, with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and veggies, all for $38. Better get it while it’s hot. The timing of the entrée’s appearance on the Los Alamitos bill-of-fare is suspicious, roughly coinciding with the emergence of California Chrome as a serious 3-year-old colt who just happens to be trained by Art Sherman at – where else? – Los Alamitos. California Chrome is the impressive winner of two straight races for products of the California breeding industry. That’s usually not enough to get your trainer enshrined on a menu. But in these early days of the Los Alamitos transformation into a key component of the Southern California Thoroughbred community, management is giddy over the idea that a bona fide Kentucky Derby horse might be training at the track better known as the Quarter Horse capital of... ...

(Mar. 4, 2014) — Led by the buying power of the Coolmore group, the Barretts March select sale of 2-year-olds in training at Fairplex Park in Pomona, Calif., showed gains in gross, average, and median prices on Monday. Demi O’Byrne, seated with Michael Tabor of Coolmore, bought the sale-topper, a Giant’s Causeway colt, for $1.15 million. O’Byrne also paid $450,000 for a Malibu Moon filly. Trainer Todd Pletcher, in the company of Tabor and O’Byrne, bought two juveniles by Malibu Moon, as agent – a filly for $950,000 as the sale’s second-highest price, and a colt for $550,000. Poker Bills Would Exclude Racing

By Bloodhorse.com SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Feb. 26, 2014) — Two Internet poker bills have been introduced in the California Legislature for consideration this year, but neither includes the racing industry on the short list of entities eligible for licensing. Josh Rubenstein, senior vice president for development of Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and spokesman for a coalition of racing interests, said the bills were disappointing in that regard but were by no means the final word. “That’s the initial language. But the way bills start out and the way they finish, as we have seen, are usually quite different,” Rubenstein said by phone Feb. 26. The measures were among hundreds introduced Feb. 21 in time to meet the submission deadline for 2014 legislation. Senate Bill 1366, authored by Sen. Lou Correa, and Assembly Bill 2291, by Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer, received their first readings Feb. 24. Correa’s bill is a reintroduction of SB 678, which was submitted last year but never moved out of committee. The Jones-Sawyer legislation essentially reworks a bill advanced... ...

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 22, 2014)—Ambitious Brew, ridden by Brice Blanc, got a perfect stalking trip and upset favored Lakerville to win Saturday’s $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes for California-breds by 1 ½ lengths, covering 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in 1:12 flat. The 4-5 favorite in a field of six older horses bred in California, Lakerville, ridden by Gary Stevens, finished second, a half length in front of Summer Hit and Rafael Bejarano. A 4-year-old Tizbud gelding trained by Marty Jones, Ambitious Brew sat third early, stalking pacesetting longshot Coach Bob and Summer Hit through fractions of 22.00, 44.22 and 1:06.28 and hit the front three-wide a furlong out. “Mike (Smith, regular rider) was out of town today and I worked him the other morning,” said Blanc.  “…I talked to Mike a little about the horse, I watched the replays and it seemed pretty straight forward.  He has plenty of tactical speed and this race looked like it had a few speed horses... ...

Native Diver’s Journey Continues

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com Of all the loose ends left by the closure of Hollywood Park, none has generated more attention than the remains of the great Native Diver. A California-bred winner of three Hollywood Gold Cups in the mid-1960s and member of Thoroughbred racing’s Hall of Fame, Native Diver was buried in what eventually became the walking ring behind the grandstand, beneath an imposing monument. Richard Shapiro, the grandson of Native Diver’s owner and breeder, Louis K. Shapiro, has become involved with the efforts of exhumation on behalf of the family. On Thursday, he had the opportunity to observe the first tentative exploration of the site. Based on reports that Native Diver’s remains were not buried directly beneath the monument, or that the monument had been moved at some point, he was ready for anything, including complete frustration. “Look, I have in a trunk at home the rundown patches he wore in his races – the little rubber patches they put on his heels,” Shapiro said before the digging... ...

Hovdey on San Luis Rey Downs

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com BONSALL, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2014) — It’s not like the place wasn’t already on the map. San Luis Rey Downs was built in 1969. But the cluster of runners that vanned up to win at Santa Anita Park last weekend helped poke a hole in the idea that the newly invigorated training center is located somewhere near the ends of the earth. It’s not, although you can see it from there. Last Saturday, Peter Miller’s San Luis Rey stable cracked with On the Backstreets (by Street Boss, out of a Springsteen classic) in the $81,650 Sweet Life Stakes down the hillside turf course, then came right back on Sunday to win the $97,450 Baffle Stakes, also down the hill, with the Tribal Rule gelding Red Outlaw. For icing, the Miller barn popped later on Sunday with the 29-1 Rathbaun in a $60,000 allowance/optional claimer, then kept rolling into the Monday holiday program with the $25,000 claimer Keyboard Courage in the first and the Street Cry colt... ...

Del Mar Plans Dirt Track in 2015

By DRF.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Feb. 18, 2014) — Del Mar plans to install a dirt track for its 2015 summer season, replacing the existing synthetic surface, track president Joe Harper said Tuesday. Harper cautioned that the move to a dirt track was contingent on finding the “right material” and gaining the necessary permits, including approval from the California Coastal Commission. “I hope it happens,” he said. “I think that’s our plan. It’s one step at a time with making sure we get the right permits. “It’s a matter of finding the right surface. It’s a long list to check off before we can say it.” Harper said that track officials are currently searching for material for a dirt track. Del Mar has had a Polytrack synthetic surface since 2007 and is the only Southern California track with such a surface. Barretts Sales and Racing at the Los Angeles County Fair, Los Alamitos, and Santa Anita have dirt tracks. Hollywood Park, which closed permanently in December, had a Cushion Track... ...

Tamarando Pointed Toward Spiral Stakes

By Bloodhorse.com ALBANY, Calif. (Feb. 16, 2014) — California-bred Tamarando and Dance With Fate, the one-two finishers in the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) Feb. 15 at Golden Gate Fields, exited the race in good order and will likely make their next starts in Kentucky. Tamarando came from last in a field of eight to win the 1 1/8-mile El Camino Real Derby by a half-length over Dance With Fate, who took second by 2 1/4 lengths over 6-5 favorite Enterprising. “He came out of the race real well,” said trainer Jerry Hollendorfer of Tamarando, who earned his third career stakes victory at odds of 2-1. All three of Tamarando’s stakes wins have come on synthetic surfaces, including the Del Mar Futurity (gr. I) on Polytrack, the Real Quiet Stakes on Cushion Track at Betfair Hollywood Park, and the El Camino Real Derby on Tapeta. Hollendorfer said he is looking at the $550,000 Spiral Stakes (gr. Red Outlaw in Tough Baffle Win

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 16, 2014)—Red Outlaw, with Joel Rosario up, prevailed in a head and head battle the length of the stretch to take Sunday’s $75,000 Baffle Stakes by a head over favored Gangnam Guy and Victor Espinoza, getting 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in 1:12.05. The second choice at 5-2 in a field of seven 3-year-olds, Red Outlaw broke alertly from post six and sat a close second down the hill to longshot Noble Metal through fractions of 21.64, 43.69 and 1:06.39. He was carried wide by the pacesetter crossing the dirt at the top of the lane and was immediately engaged to his outside by the favorite as the field straightened for home and those two bumped a furlong out, resulting in a stewards’ inquiry. After a review of several minutes, the stewards ruled unanimously that the contact did not affect the original order of finish and they let the original result stand. Trained by Peter Miller, Red Outlaw paid... ...

Tamarando Wins El Camino Real

By DRF.com ALBANY, Calif. (Feb. 15, 2014) — California-bred Tamarando was content to sit last through the first six furlongs, but then unleashed a strong closing run to score a solid victory in the Grade 3, $200,000 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday. Tamarando, winner of last year’s Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity, was not exactly a last-minute replacement for his unbeaten stablemate Exit Stage Left, who suffered a tendon injury one week earlier. “We had talked about running him anyway,” said winning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who had given Tamarando, a son of  Bertrando, a strong five-furlong work after his second-place finish in the Jan. 25 Cal Cup Derby at Santa Anita. Hollendorfer said that owner-breeders Larry and Marianne Williams did not want to run at Santa Anita again because the track does not play well to Tamarando’s late-closing style. Tamarando ($6.60) was last in the field of eight but sat closer to the lead than he had in recent starts. He was five lengths behind pacesetting I’ll Wrap... ...

California Chrome Works at Los Al

From Santa Anita Publicity CYPRESS, Calif. (Feb. 16, 2014) — California Cup Derby winner California Chrome worked four furlongs at Los Alamitos Saturday in 47.80 in preparation for his foray into open company in the Grade II, $300,000 San Felipe Stakes on March 8, where it is expected he will face, among others, the Bob Baffert-trained Bayern, smashing 15-length allowance winner on Thursday. “I got him galloping out (five furlongs) in 1:00 3/5,” said trainer Art Sherman, who had his regular exercise rider, Jay Conklin, aboard the California-bred son of Lucky Pulpit. Sherman was philosophical about facing tougher foes in the San Felipe. “We can’t duck anybody,” he said. “We need points (to qualify for the Kentucky Derby on May 3). I’ll just keep my fingers crossed.” The San Felipe is worth 50 Kentucky Derby points to the winner. ...

Horseman Bill Currin Passes at 77

By Bloodhorse.com Bill Currin, who bred, owned, and trained 2006 Hollywood Futurity (gr. I) winner Stormello, died Feb. 11 in Solana Beach, Calif., after a long illness. He was 77. His wife of 58 years, Betty, was at his side, as she has been since they became childhood sweethearts in North Carolina. The Currins have raced several major stakes winners. Bill trained their homebred Memorette, a graded stakes-winning earner of $896,753. As Bill liked to tell the story, the only reason the mare raced in Betty’s name was because Bill didn’t have time to get to a jewelry store one Christmas. Memorette’s second dam, Fondre, won five stakes for Currin and W.R. Hawn. She became a foundation mare for the Currins’ breeding operation. Memorette is by Memo out of Fondre’s daughter Forever Fondre. The Currins moved to California when Bill wanted to be an actor and followed Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz west when they formed an acting school. During those days, Bill lived in the Chateau Marmont hotel in... ...

Avoiding IRS Tax Audits

By Herb Wittenberg, CPA COVINA, Calif. (Feb. 7, 2014) — An IRS Audit is disagreeable. It’s time consuming, requiring you and/or your accountant to gather up your supporting documentation.  Perhaps you can end up paying additional taxes.  Some things trigger an audit, so here are some tips to help you avoid them. The Schedule C Form requires you to enter an occupational code number for your business.  The correct number for Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding is 711210.  Failure to enter this number on the Schedule C can get you an IRS Audit. Each Race Track sends you a Form 1099 at year end showing your gross purse earnings.  They also send the IRS a copy of the Form 1099.  You must show gross purse income of at least this amount on your return or it will trigger a letter, (and perhaps an audit), from the IRS. The actual money you receive from the Race Track will always differ from the Form 1099 because the track deducts various expenses – i.e.... ...

New Del Mar Turf Course by Feb. 21

By utsandiego.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2014) — If you think putting in a new turf course at a racetrack is as simple as watching grass grow, well, you don’t know worms about turf. For an understanding of how complicated it is to install a new grass course for 1,200-pound racehorses at Del Mar, know this: It all started Oct. 1, 2012 when sprigs of Greg Norman 1 (GN1) Bermuda grass were planted on a sandy, 12-acre plot in the Coachella Valley. Now, that grass is mature and ready to be cut, rolled and transported to where the new and improved turf will meet the surf at Del Mar. For nearly 18 months, the Pacific Sod Company has followed a stringent growing and maintenance plan developed by Del Mar for its turf course. “That’s almost a year and a half of growing, which is unheard of (for a project like Del Mar’s),” said Leif Dickinson, turf and landscape superintendent at Del Mar. “It was costly to do, and we don’t... ...

California Handle Jumps in January

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. – Wagering at California tracks rose 14 percent in January, bucking a national trend, according to discussions at an open forum conducted at Santa Anita by the Thoroughbred Owners of California on Saturday. “With the country being down on handle, a lot of that has to do with weather on the East Coast, wagering on California was up 14 percent and purse generation was up 12 percent,” said TOC president Joe Morris. “We’ve been consistently outperforming this year. That’s good news for us out here.” California had a dry January, with hardly any rainfall, leaving the state in a drought. That led to little disruption to racing. Across the country, many tracks were affected by snow and cold weather. Nationwide, wagering was down .23 of a percentage point in January, from $802.3 million to $800 million, according to figures released last week by Equibase. The California handle figures mentioned by Morris were part of a wide variety of issues discussed before a small group of owners... ...

Fatalities Down in 2012-13

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 7, 2014) – Equine fatalities at California tracks dropped 24 percent in the 2012-13 fiscal year to its lowest number in more than two decades, according to the California Horse Racing Board’s annual report, published earlier this month. From July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013, 209 horses of all breeds died within enclosures under the jurisdiction of the racing board throughout the state. By comparison, there were 278 fatalities in the 2011-2012 fiscal year, and 265 in the 2010-2011 fiscal year. The figure reached 325 in the 2007-08 fiscal year. “That’s a substantial drop,” said California equine medical director Dr. Rick Arthur. For the 2012-13 fiscal year, the racing board listed 90 fatalities during racing, 56 fatalities during training and 63 other deaths from such causes as heart attacks, diseases including colic, colitis and enteritis, and respiratory and neurological causes. Although the commission did not release fatalities by breed, Arthur said there were fewer Thoroughbred fatalities during the last fiscal year than any year since... ...

Hovdey on California Chrome

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 29, 2014) — Art Sherman woke up last Saturday morning hoping his horse would get a decent piece of a $250,000 pot offered for Cal-breds to be run later that day at Santa Anita. He went to bed that night wondering about hotel rates in Louisville. It’s a long jump from the last Saturday in January to the first Saturday in May, which means there is nothing that says California Chrome necessarily will make it to the Kentucky Derby. History indicates he’s got a steep climb, and not even his authoritative, 5 1/2-length romp in the California Cup Derby gets him any closer to the starting gate, let alone the winner’s circle, at Churchill Downs. The stats alone are brutal on horses reared out West. The last California-bred to win the Kentucky Derby was Decidedly, a son of Derby winner Determine, who was bred and raised at George Pope’s El Peco Ranch near the town of Madera in the state’s vast Central Valley.... ...

The Story Behind California Chrome

By Robbie Rodriguez ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2014) — Two weeks before California Chrome was born, co-owner/breeder of California Chrome, Steve Coburn, had a dream. “I woke up and told my wife I had a dream and that we’re going to have a chestnut colt, with a big white blaze on his face, with four white stockings.”  Coburn said. On February 18, 2011, California Chrome was born, looking exactly like the horse in his dream. “My sister Brenda passed away succumbing to cancer when she was only 36 years old, and her birthday was February 18.”  Coburn said in a much deeper voice exuding with pride. “It’ll be 36 years this year since we’ve had a Triple Crown winner.”  Coburn continued.  “And this year’s Kentucky Derby falls on my 61st birthday.” When California Chrome’s dam Love the Chase was in training as a young filly, she was trained by Greg Gilchrist. “Greg told me I’d be a real dumb ass to get into this game.” Coburn said. “So Perry Martin... ...

$250,000 Cal Cup Derby — CALIFORNIA CHROME

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 25, 2014)—California Chrome proved himself best of the statebreds on Saturday at Santa Anita with an overpowering victory in the $250,000 California Cup Derby, a performance that his trainer, Art Sherman, thought was in him, and which will earn California Chrome a shot to prove himself worth of getting to another Derby, the one in Kentucky on May 3. “He had been training like a bomb,” Sherman said after California Chrome  rolled to a 5 1/2-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds. Tamarando, winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity last summer, rallied for second, 3 1/4 lengths in front of third-place Life Is a Joy. Awesome Return was fourth and was followed, in order, by Better Bet, Public Policy, and Lucky Views. Three horses did not finish the race. Aotearoa was eased on the far turn. And then in the stretch, Electric Eddie, while racing in fifth place, broke down, and, unable to run straight because of his injuries, veered into... ...

$250,000 Cal Cup Classic, Presented by City National Bank — WEEWINNIN

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. – Injury kept Weewinnin off the track for 11 months in 2013. After that long of a layoff, a few seconds of suspense was not an issue for his backers in Saturday’s $251,500 California Cup Turf Classic at Santa Anita. Jockey Joe Talamo had Weewinnin on the rail on the turn of the turf race over 1 1/8 miles, waiting for running room behind the pacesetters. When space developed, Talamo urged Weewinnin to the front in early stretch and guided the 4-year-old gelding to a 21-1 upset win in the year’s top race for older California-breds. Weewinnin ($44.80) finished 2  1/4 lengths in front of 10-1 Stoney Fleece, who was a neck in front of 9-2 Jules Journey. Summer Hit, the 6-5 favorite, set a quick pace of 23.45 and 46.88 seconds but faded from contention in the final furlong. Weewinnin was fourth for the first six furlongs, racing on the inside. “We had a great trip,” Talamo said. “I was able to sit behind the... ...

$125,000 Donald Valpredo Cal Cup Sprint — BIG MACHER

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 25, 2014)–Trainer Richard Baltas was all smiles following Saturday’s $125,000 Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint for good reason, as his Big Macher, claimed seven starts back out of a maiden $20,000 claimer on July 17 at Del Mar, had just powered to a 1 ¾ length win under Rafael Bejarano, covering six furlongs in a rapid 1:08.62. Breaking from the outside post in a nine-horse field, Big Macher, the second choice at 2-1, sat second to longshot Coach Bob and Kent Desormeaux down the backside and around the far turn before taking the lead at the top of the lane. “Rafael said he was going to sit far back, but I told him that if he breaks sharp not to be too far out of it,” said Baltas.  “I think that’s where he likes to be, up close, and he still can kick when he’s up close.  He just came into the race real good and it was a great day.” A 4-year-old... ...

$200,000 Cal Cup Oaks — SUSANS EXPRESS

By Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 25, 2014)—With blinkers refitted, longshot Susans Express sat a close second at the rail going to the far turn and found a seam three off the fence turning for home and powered through the lane with Kent Desormeaux to take Saturday’s $200,000 California Cup Oaks by 1 ¼ lengths, getting one mile on turf in 1:34.72. Off at 65-1 in a field of 14 California-bred 3-year-old fillies, Susans Express, trained and co-owned by Jorge Periban, tried the grass for the first time in the Oaks. Susans Express was winless in four starts since breaking her maiden sprinting for a $50,000 claiming tag on Aug. 30. “Jorge told me exactly how to ride this filly and obviously it worked out,” said Desormeux, who collected his second stakes win of the day.  “She’s a very nice filly.  I’m just glad to be back here and I have to thank Jorgie for putting me on.” A filly by Decarchy, Susans Express, owned by her breeder Ed... ...

Something to Believe In

By Matt Burke ALBANY, Calif. (Jan. 9, 2014) — Legends are not simply conjured out of thin air and pasted on to the pages of our children’s history books. Rather, they are conceived from the most exquisite blend of pinpoint timing and awe-inspiring achievement. Willie Mays knew this as he chased down an uncatchable fly ball in the 1954 World Series. Years later, fans knew it as Gale Sayers fielded a punt and galloped eighty-five yards over the Wrigley Field mud for a touchdown, thus marking his sixth score of the day as a rookie with the Chicago Bears. And in horse racing, Hollywood Park’s track announcer, Vic Stauffer certainly knew it as his deafening cries for Zenyatta shook the grandstand and echoed on up into the heavens during the 2010 Vanity Handicap. In sports, and in life, everyone needs someone or something to believe in. It is belief that nourishes the spectator’s soul as they cheer on competitors in all forms of competition. Belief unites people who would otherwise... ...
