By Canadian Thoroughbred

VANCOUVER, B.C. (Sept. 10, 2022) — Regal Riot, a British Columbia-bred chestnut 3-year-old son of California stallion Jersey Town, won a stretch battle with invader Arollercoasterride to take the Grade 3 B.C. Derby on September 10 at Hastings Racecourse.

Under jockey Efrain Hernandez, Regal Riot, who was coming off a third in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Century Mile on Aug. 20, tracked Peter Redekop’s recent maiden winner Arollercoasterride through moderate pace splits of 48.88 for half a mile and 1:14.71 for 6 furlongs early in the 1 1/8 mile race. The pair took off from the remaining rivals and put on a show in the stretch run with Regal Riot edging clear for a neck victory. Arollercoasterride, a son of Curlin – Catch the Thrill, was second over Boitano, a son of Nyquist.

The final time was 1:50.71 and Regal Riot collected the bulk of the $125,000 purse.

Regal Riot (Jersey Town – Regal Red by On Target) is owned by Lance Giesbrecht and Kim Peacock, trained by Robert Anderson, and was bred by Suzanne Anderson.

“It’s a great win and the horse ran his guts out,” said Giesbrecht. “Efrain kept him right up there near the lead and that’s what he loves to do, run hard.”

Second in his only outing as a juvenile, Regal Riot won three of his first four races in 2022 including the Jack Diamond Maturity, RS McLeod Stakes and Chris Loseth Handicap before finishing third in the Sir Winston Churchill Stakes.

Regal Riot is the fifth foal to race of multiple stakes winner Regal Red, who won six stakes races and over $188,000 in her career racing in B.C. The mare has also produced stakes winners Slice of Red and Wilo Kat.
