Winter Mixed Sale Wednesday at Fairplex

POMONA, Calif. (Jan. 14, 2019) — The California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Jan. 16 will conduct the California mixed sale that was previously part of the Barretts calendar. The sale consists of a large number of newly turned 2-year-olds, as well as yearlings and broodmares.

With 154 head cataloged, the sale will begin at noon PST at Fairplex Park in Pomona, Calif.

This is the same setting Barretts used throughout its 29 years of existence and it is also a year-round simulcast facility. Topped by a 2-year-old son of Quality Road  sold for $120,000, last year’s sale saw 111 horses gross $1,180,600 for an average of $10,636. The 2018 sale also included several stallion seasons and art items that were donated to raise more than $25,000 for victims of the San Luis Rey Downs fire, with Barretts donating 10% of its commissions from the horses sold at the sale to the relief effort.

Fasig-Tipton and Santa Anita Park last year announced a joint sales effort in Southern California following the discontinuation of Barretts. The first sale under that arrangement will be the June 5 Santa Anita 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale at Santa Anita Park.

“CTBA is conducting the sale for its membership during the transition from Barretts to Fasig-Tipton,” said Doug Burge, president of the CTBA. “The L.A. County Fair has provided its facility until sales move to Santa Anita beginning in June.”

Though 2-year-olds make up the largest group in the January catalog, several broodmare and yearling offerings may also garner attention.

A California-bred yearling full brother to grade 1 winner What a View is part of Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency consignment. The colt, Hip 93, is by Vronsky and out of Oceans N Mountains, by Manila. Havens is offering a large consignment for a variety of clients, as well as 19 foals of 2017 for Liberty Road Stables.

Several other pedigrees in the catalog have current connections. Smiling Tiger , sire of Dec. 26 La Brea Stakes (G1) winner Spiced Perfection, is the sire of a Cal-bred yearling filly in the consignment of Sue Greene’s Woodbridge Farm. The filly, Hip 67, is out of stakes-placed Gotham City mare King City Kitty, who is also part of the Woodbridge consignment and is cataloged as Hip 66 in foal to Smiling Tiger.
