Cal-bred Quartet Takes Sam Spear Shot

ALBANY, Calif. (Sept. 1, 2023) – Stakes winners Jimmy Blue Jeans and Royal ‘n Rando and fellow California-breds Cousin Richie and Duidic are entered in Monday’s $50,000 Sam Spear Memorial Stakes at Golden Gate.

Cousin Richie is by Richard’s Kid, out of the Tapizar mare Crown on Tap, was bred by owner Larry Odbert and is trained by Sergio Ledezma. He has three wins in nine starts, earnings of $89,600 and is coming off a second in the Aug. 12 Robert Dupret Derby.

Jimmy Blue Jeans is by James Street, out of the Marino Marini mare Blue Blizzard, was bred by Perry Bruno & John Gezon, is owned by Bruno, Gezon and Robert Jones and is trained by Andy Mathis. He has six wins in 20 starts, earnings of $305,900 and is coming off a fifth in the Aug. 5 California Dreamin’. He was second in this race last year.

Druidic is by Boisterous, out of the Rocky Bar mare Shared Image, was bred by owner Robert Traynor and is trained by D. Wayne Baker. He has three wins in 12 starts, earnings of $49,670 and is coming off a fourth in the Aug. 12 Robert Dupret Derby.

Royal ‘n Rando is by Tamarando, out of the Grand Slam mare Royal Grand Slam, was bred by owners Mr. & Mrs. Larry Williams and is trained by Steven Specht. He has six wins in 20 starts, earnings of $211,094 and is coming off a fourth in the Aug. 5 California Dreamin’.
