‘Chrome Flies to Kentucky

By DRF.com HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 29, 2017) — On Sunday morning, shortly before California Chrome was to fly to Kentucky and take up residence at Taylor Made Farm, farm co-owner Frank Taylor said California Chrome had “some heat and some filling” in the knee. “He’s sound to walk, but he’s off at the jog,” Taylor said. California Chrome was perfectly fine to travel to Kentucky, but Taylor said he would be X-rayed on arrival at Taylor Made, and that the X-rays would be read by the noted veterinarian Dr. Larry Bramlage. Barring something unforeseen, Taylor said California Chrome would be able to be bred to mares, and in fact he was scheduled to be in the company of some test mares on Wednesday as he is quickly taught his new duties; the breeding season commences in mid-February. “Normally we get them right after the Breeders’ Cup, have a bigger window,” Taylor said. “He’s not going to have to put much weight on his front legs for awhile. It would... ...

‘Chrome Has Fluid in Right Knee

By DRF.com HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 28, 2017) — California Chrome cooled out off in his right knee, trainer Art Sherman said Saturday night, which likely explains why he ran so poorly in his career finale at Gulfstream Park in the Pegasus World Cup. Sherman said it did not appear to be a major injury at this point, saying there was fluid in the joint, “but it’s not like he’s dead lame,” Sherman said. Unless California chrome’s condition unexpectedly worsens, he will go to Kentuck on Sunday morning and be examined in Lexington by Dr. Larry Bramlage, according to Sherman. California Chrome is scheduled to go to stud at Taylor Made, and the flight to Kentucky was originally scheduled with that in mind. Sherman said if the injury is a chip, it likely will be removed arthroscopically. He said he did not think it was anything worse than that, but said California Chrome is clearly off in that joint. ...

Hovdey on California Chrome

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 26, 2017) — This is a story without an ending, so don’t expect a big finish or a mind-blowing, dramatic twist in the final paragraph. That might come Saturday at Gulfstream Park in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup, or it might not. Horse racing is a sport in which anything can happen, and usually does. How else do you explain California Chrome? The players in the saga of California Chrome each had their own moment when the connection was made. For Art Sherman, it was his second breeze, when the unfurnished stride of the young colt tipped him as a racehorse destined for good things. For Victor Espinoza, it was watching from the sidelines as California Chrome kept charging forward despite a nightmare trip in the 2013 Del Mar Futurity. For Steve Coburn, it was the day in 2010 when he took his family to visit Love the Chase in foal to Lucky Pulpit at Harris Farms in California’s Central Valley.... ...

Cal Cup Races Before and After Pegasus

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 26, 2017) — On a day when the richest California-bred in history makes the final start of his career in Florida, the richest Cal-bred program of the season takes place back home at Santa Anita. The California Cup – five statebred stakes topped by the $250,000 California Cup Turf Classic – does not include California Chrome, who runs Saturday at Gulfstream Park in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup. But his shadow, and that of the Pegasus, stretches across the country. Santa Anita’s post times Saturday were revised to accommodate the 10-race local card and the Pegasus simulcast from Gulfstream that will be run between races 6 and 7. First post at Santa Anita is 11:45 a.m. Pacific. Ashleyluvssugar is favored in the Cal Cup Turf Classic, a 1 1/8-mile race that normally would be easy pickings for the multiple graded stakes winner. This year, the race came up tough – five of the 10 entrants are graded stakes winners, including Grade 1 winners Ralis... ...

‘Chrome Draws Outside in Pegasus

By Bloodhorse.com HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 23, 2017) — In many ways the entries alone mark an early “mission accomplished” for the first edition of the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) as the world’s richest race set for Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park has attracted the world’s two top dirt horses in training in California Chrome   and Arrogate. Both standout horses picked up hardware for their connections at the Eclipse Awards Jan. 21 as Arrogate was named champion 3-year-old male and California Chrome secured the Horse of the Year honor along with the champion older dirt male trophy. While the chestnut picked up the night’s top honor based on a spectacular overall season, Arrogate scored a victory in the one race where the two met last year when he surged past California Chrome in deep stretch to win the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) in November at Santa Anita Park. The 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic was the most lucrative race ever conducted in North America, but the Pegasus will... ...

Only One More Race for ‘Chrome

By DRF.com HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 23, 2017) – The only reason California Chrome is running Saturday instead of already being at stud is that the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park will be the richest race in the world, with a $12 million purse. He could win a $7 million first prize. The only reason California Chrome will head to Kentucky on Sunday morning is that the breeding season is about to commence, and mares have been booked, many of them owned by those involved in the current ownership group, California Chrome LLC, precluding any further starts. But the day is growing closer, believes Frank Taylor – whose family’s Taylor Made Farm co-owns California Chrome and will stand him at stud – that prize money on offer for the best horses will be more than most horses can make at stud, which will help keep those horses on the track. With the Pegasus at $12 million, the Dubai World Cup at $10 million, and the Breeders’ Cup Classic at... ...

Ralis Switched to Cal Cup Turf Classic

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 22, 2017) –Reddam Racing’s Semper Fortis will run in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) Jan. 28 in the place of stablemate Ralis, trainer Doug O’Neill said Jan. 22. O’Neill said the decision came after the pair worked in company Jan. 21 at Santa Anita Park. Both were credited with six furlongs in 1:11 4/5, but the conditioner said Semper Fortis, a graded stakes-placed Distorted Humor   colt, is training better on dirt, so he will get the nod for the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus. Tyler Gaffalione is scheduled to ride. Ralis, the 2015 Hopeful Stakes (G1) winner, has not won a race in 11 starts since, but has finished second in three grass stakes, including the Sept. 4 Del Mar Derby (G2T). ‘Chrome Sizzles in Final Workout

By Bloodhorse.com HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 21, 2017) — The mood around Barn 2 on the Gulfstream Park backstretch the morning of Jan. 21 was that of a class reunion. Old friends gathered—swapping memories, hugs, posing for pictures. There were tales of fantastical nature being told as they all came wanting to share a moment, an experience, a memory about the fiery chestnut horse pulling exercise rider Dihigi Gladney around the shedrow. About the only figure seemingly unaffected by the sentimentality of the moment was said chestnut himself. For champion California Chrome  , the fact he was stepping onto the track for the last timed workout of his storied career was something beyond his comprehension. With his blinkers affixed and Gladney playing the role of statue in the irons, the 2014 Horse of the Year put his head down and just did his usual thing, snatching the breath away from those who came to enjoy him while they can. California Chrome’s final move before he makes his final start—in the $12... ...

‘Chrome Seeks Rare Double

By DRF.com HALLANDALE, Fla. (Jan. 20, 2017) — Since the Eclipse Awards began in 1971, just one horse – John Henry – has been named Horse of the Year in nonconsecutive years, a feat California-bred California Chrome could equal on Saturday night when the 46th annual Eclipse Awards dinner is held at Gulfstream Park. California Chrome was named Horse of the Year in 2014. After a 2015 campaign cut short by injury and squabbles among his original owners, he rebounded in 2016 with a nearly flawless campaign highlighted by victories in the Dubai World Cup and Pacific Classic, his lone loss coming in the Breeders’ Cup Classic against Arrogate. Arrogate and California Chrome are the two leading contenders for Horse of the Year. The 248 Eclipse Award voters who submitted ballots had to decide if California Chrome’s overall body of work was superior to their lone head-to-head showdown. Based on what many voters have posted on social media or in their respective publications, it appears that California Chrome has the... ...

NTRA Asks for Help with Tax Laws

From NTRA LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 11, 2017) — The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) today announced that a system has been established at https://www.ntra.com/comment for individuals to submit an e-mail comment directly to the United States Treasury Department in support of newly proposed regulations related to withholding and reporting of pari-mutuel winnings. The proposed regulations, which would replace outdated regulations adopted nearly 40 years ago, more accurately reflect today’s pari-mutuel wagering environment and will positively impact a significant percentage of winning wagers, particularly those involving multi-horse or multi-race exotic wagers. It is believed that the proposed changes will result in tens of millions of dollars in additional pari-mutuel wagering annually. If adopted, the new regulations will not only  promote greater compliance and more accurate reporting and withholding by taxpayers but also reduce burdensome and needless paperwork system-wide. Efforts spearheaded by the NTRA on behalf of the industry over the past two and a half years came to fruition on December 30 when Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) published... ...

Ellis, however, said that he was told by Arthur last week that Masochistic would be able to run, as long as he tested clean by race day. Ellis had Masochistic tested... ...

Management created the Golden Gate Fields Sprint to give his hometown fans a thrill, and trainer Greg Gilchrist and owner Harry Aleo were glad to oblige. Then Sherman stole the show, as Carthage and Dennis Carr went after Lost in the Fog and Russell Baze from the start and drew off to win by three. “Would you believe they booed my horse coming back?”... ...
