Racing Official Peter Tunney Passes at 83

(Sept. 26, 2021) — Peter Tunney, the longtime racing executive at Golden Gate Fields in Northern California, died Wednesday after a lengthy illness, his family and friends said Thursday. Tunney, 83, died at his home in Piedmont, Calif., not far from Golden Gate Fields. The son of a racing official and steward, Tunney began his involvement in racing in the 1960s, working as a racing official at Southern California tracks, including Del Mar where he was the racing secretary for three years from 1972-74. Trainer Molly Pearson Passes at 56

By DRF.com PHOENIX, Ariz. (Sept. 5, 2021) — Trainer Molly Pearson, who won more than 900 races in a career spanning nearly 40 years, died Wednesday, according to family and friends. She was 56. Pearson won 914 races, and her runners had purse earnings of more than $11 million. Her best year came in 2005, when she won 54 races and had purse earnings of more than $645,000. This year, she had won 18 times from 110 starters and had purse earnings of $245,453. Her last runner was Tactical Attack, who finished second in the Coyote Springs Stakes at Arizona Downs on Tuesday. Pearson raced primarily in Arizona and California, and had runners at both Arizona Downs and Del Mar at the time of her death. The horses in California are being moved to other trainers. The Conference is scheduled for Wednesday November 3rd from 8:30am until 5:00pm followed by a conference dinner that evening.  The conference location has not been finalized, but we expect to announce soon the Estancia La Jolla Hotel and Spa as the conference host site. While Dr. Grande has long been involved in safety efforts as Official Veterinarian (OV) on Southern California’s thoroughbred circuit, he recently increased his commitment by stepping into the newly created position of Chief Official Veterinarian (COV) for all of California racing. Dr. Grande has been working in tandem since July 1 with Dr. Jeffrey Blea, the CHRB’s equine medical director (EMD). Cap Reached on Supplemental H-2B Visas

(Aug. 21, 2021) — United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently announced that it had received enough petitions for returning workers to reach the additional 22,000 H-2B visas made available through the FY 2021 H-2B supplemental visa temporary final rule and would reject and return any cap-subject petitions for H-2B returning workers received after August 13. USCIS also announced that it would return any accompanying fees with these petitions.    The FY 2021 H-2B supplemental visa temporary final rule published in May offered employers 22,000 supplemental H-2B visas for FY 2021. Of these, 6,000 were reserved for nationals of the Northern Triangle countries of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala and 16.000 for returning workers. Although the USCIS announced that they had received enough petitions for the 16,000 visas initially made available for returning workers, it did not receive enough to reach the 6,000 allocated for workers from the Northern Triangle countries. Stay Thirsty Trio Sweep Graduation Stakes

(Aug. 8, 2021) — Sons of stallion Stay Thirsty finished 1-2-3 as Lovingier, London or Zondlo’s Rock N Rye scampered home by four and a quarter lengths in Sunday’s $100,000 Graduation Stakes for Golden State Series eligible 2-year-olds at Del Mar, then had to withstand a rider’s objection before he was made the official winner of the five and one-half furlong dash for California-bred juveniles. The race originally had six youngsters entered, but two scratches reduced the field to four and cancelled show betting. The winner covered the distance in 1:05.77. Umberto Rispoli rode Rock N Rye, who is trained by Walther Solis. The Stay Thirsty colt was bred by co-owner Terry Lovingier. Northern California Sale Set for Tuesday

Tuesday’s one-day sale, conducted by the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, has a catalog of 140 horses compared to 126 in 2020. The 2019 sale had a catalog of 180 horses. The 2020 sale recorded higher gross and average prices than the 2019 auction. The gross in 2020 was $575,600, leading to an average price of $7,778, according to sale company figures. In 2019, the gross was $555,000 for an average of $5,388. The sale has a small number of horses of racing age, but is primarily an auction of California-bred yearlings. The catalog includes yearlings by six of the leading stallions in the state by progeny earnings – I’ll Have Another, Ministers Wild Cat, Mr. Big, Stay Thirsty, Smiling Tiger, and Vronsky. (Aug. 4, 2021) – Pearl Tiara and Diamond Solitaire, Indiana-bred daughters of California stallion Majestic Harbor, finished 1-2 in Wednesday’s $150,000 Indiana First Lady Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Indiana Grand. Pearl Tiara is out of the Mineshaft mare Pearl Pendant. She has four wins in 10 starts and earnings of $225,313. She ran the mile and 70 yards in 1:43.65 and won by a neck over Diamond Solitaire as the 6-5 favorite in a field of 10.
