Los Al Derby to be Run in September

By Bloodhorse.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Mar. 24, 2016) — Los Alamitos Race Course intends on running the next edition of the Los Alamitos Derby (gr. II) during its September meet, a track official said during a California Horse Racing Board meeting March 24 at the California Exposition and State Fair in Sacramento. Los Alamitos for 2016 lost its July meet—which featured the Los Alamitos Derby the last two years—but gained spring dates through negotiations with Santa Anita Park and Del Mar, so the Orange County track had to move one of its signature races either to its upcoming April-May meet, or meets later in the year, in September or December. BALAN: CHRB Approves 2016 California Race Dates With the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) running April 9, Brad McKinzie, Los Alamitos general manager of Thoroughbred racing, said September would be the best fit. “In cooperation with the Thoroughbred Owners of California, they have requested that we continue to run the Los Alamitos Derby,” McKinzie said. “Obviously, the Los Alamitos Derby doesn’t... ...

World Cup Report About ‘Chrome

By Bloodhorse.com DUBAI, U.A.E. (Mar. 24, 2016) –Stand on the Meydan surface and soak up the morning sun, and watch California Chrome   stride out onto the racetrack. There’s his signature ear prick, a turn of the head toward snapping cameras—the look of eagles. It’s looming, Chrome’s chance at redemption, as these last few days to the $10 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) count down. He comes in a fresher, stronger horse after his runner-up finish to Prince Bishop in the World Cup of 2015, but faces a slew of tough challengers including Godolphin’s own grade I winner Frosted. Anticipation is mounting, and at the center of it all stands this 2014 Horse of the Year, the one who charmed thousands through his Triple Crown campaign as a 3-year-old and somehow, in a world of brief campaigns and early stud deals, still races on at 5. NOVAK: California Chrome Draws Wide for World Cup You’ve heard of “Chromies,” those zealous folks who track the every move of the Art Sherman trainee.... ...

Jeff Lukas Passes at 58

By Bloodhorse.com ATOKA, Okla. (Mar. 24, 2016) — Tough, dedicated, and determined are how friends remember Jeff Lukas, who died this week at age 58. Also being remembered is the brilliant training career cut short by the aftermath of severe brain injuries Lukas suffered in December 1993, when he collided with Tabasco Cat, loose and in full stride through the Santa Anita Park barn area. “I started off with Jeff as an exercise rider, at the bottom, and I mean he was tough,” said trainer Dallas Stewart, who rose through the Lukas Racing Stable organization to become an assistant under Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, Jeff’s father. “He was focused and a really great horseman.” When Stewart started with the Lukas stable, he worked with Winning Colors, the 1988 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Jeff Lukas is credited with developing. “To be the kind of trainer he was, you just have to have it in you—it can’t be taught. He had it,” Stewart said. “And after the accident, he... ...

California Chrome Draws Outside Post

By Bloodhorse.com DUBAI, U.A.E. (Mar. 23, 2016) — California Chrome   drew wide for his March 26 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) quest, a bid to go one better after running second in 2015. But if trainer Art Sherman is bothered by post 11 in a field of 12, he’s not letting it show. “Listen, the outside is good, if you’ve got the horse, and I hope we do,” Sherman said March 23, as he and other connections of the 2014 Horse of the Year waited until second-last to see their runner’s name drawn for post position selection for the $10 million Dubai World Cup. “There wasn’t too much I could do about the draw. He’s got tactical speed, so I’m not going to worry about it.” Grade I winners Frosted, Mshawish, Hoppertunity, and Keen Ice join the charismatic chestnut in representing the U.S. in the 21st edition of the World Cup. Last year California Chrome broke from post 9 and was beaten 2 3/4 lengths by Prince Bishop. “We lost ground on... ...

‘Chrome ‘Perfect’ for Dubai World Cup

By Bloodhorse.com DUBAI, U.A.E. (Mar. 22, 2016) — After flying from California to Dubai, trainer Art Sherman had trouble sleeping, which allowed him to get to the barn and see California Chrome   earlier than anticipated. Shortly after 2 a.m. local time March 22, Sherman showed up at the 5-year-old’s stall and fed him a couple of cookies. In addition to the colt’s strong appetite, Sherman liked what he saw in advance of the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (UAE-I) March 26, “Either I’m getting smaller or he’s getting bigger,” Sherman said on a National Thoroughbred Racing Association conference call March 22. “There’s been such a big change in him. You wouldn’t recognize him now from how he looked as a 3-year-old. He’s turned into a great individual.” Following a 2015 season that was plagued by questionable decisions by his ownership and a variety of ailments, California Chrome has a new ownership group and a new lease on life. He was given time off for rest and relaxation at... ...

Gonzalez sustained the injury March 20 at Santa Anita Park, where he fell off Follini in the fifth race after the Western Fame gelding stumbled in the turn during the six-furlong claiming race. Gonzalez appeared to fall right into the path of two horses, but Stephen said he was unsure whether the jockey was struck by one of the trailing runners. Gonzalez was immediately transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Calif., where he was treated for his injuries. Gonzalez is second in Santa Anita’s jockey standings, with a 47-34-33 record from 269 mounts and nearly $1.9 million in purse earnings during the meet that began in late December. Diane and Betty Irvin

BY EMILY SHIELDS As longtime, staunch supporters of California racing, the Irvin family has had its share of stakes wins. Watching their Triple Crown trail-bound homebred Smokey Image storm to an impressive victory in the $245,000 California Cup Derby tops the list. Although family patriarch Robert Irvin passed away in 2015, his legacy lives on through the efforts of his wife, Betty, daughter Diane, and the exploits of Smokey Image. Robert Irvin was a lawyer-turned-businessman, acquiring Armored Transport Inc. and turning it into a nationwide livelihood. His passion, however, lay in both ranching and horses. In 1968 he purchased C-Punch Ranch in Lovelock, Nev. The fully functional cattle ranch and alfalfa farm has been operating since the mid-1800s, and now boasts an inn and casino in addition to its horse division. The Irvins tried Quarter Horse racing at first and found modest success, but the pull of Thoroughbred racing soon won them over. A $12,000 purchase, Tepee Party, went on to produce stakes winners Big Squaw and Indian School. Big... ...

II) during their morning workouts Feb. 27 at Santa Anita Park. In the last workout session of the day, the two Triple Crown hopefuls found each other. Danzing Candy, with Mike Smith aboard, and workmate Radio Silent broke first, but Smokey Image and Victor Espinoza were right behind. A little rank early and four lengths back, not overjoyed with the dirt in his face, Smokey Image moved three wide alongside the Cliff Sise-trained pair through most of the turn but settled in the stretch and cruised to hit the wire in 1:12 1/5, about two lengths behind Danzing Candy. The time was tied for the fastest drill at the distance, among 30 workers at six furlongs Saturday morning. How Sensational Star Stakes Got Its Name

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 26, 2016) — It’s approaching 30 years since Bill Spawr claimed Sensational Star for $32,000 with the hopes of turning him into a stakes winner. Spawr wasn’t disappointed. Sensational Star would go on to become a graded stakes winner under Spawr’s tutelage and retired with a career record of 39 starts, 13 wins, 11 seconds and $442,445 earned, this in the pre-inflation era. Saturday’s $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes, for Golden State Series eligibles, is named for Spawr’s clever claim. Spawr is known for his keen eye at the claim box. His most accomplished bargain was Exchange Rate, taken for $50,000. She went on to win three Grade I stakes and earn more than a million dollars. Spawr, a native of Bell, California, who turned 76 last Dec. 13, had his day in the sun with 2011 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Amazombie, who would go on to win an Eclipse Award. Claimed in 1988, Sensational Star later won the Pat O’Brien Breeders’ Cup Handicap... ...

Hovdey on California Chrome

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com In order to fully appreciate California Chrome’s race in Dubai on Thursday evening, UAE time, it was necessary to perform a few calculations and cultural translations. As breakfast was served, and with more than two hours to post (9:55 a.m. Pacific), there still was plenty of time. The race is on the dirt course at Meydan at 2,000 meters. The dirt course at Meydan is laid out inside the turf course. One meter is equivalent to 0.000621371 miles, which multiplied by 2,000 is 1.24.26, close enough to call it a mile and a quarter, the distance of the $10 million World Cup on March 26, which is why California Chrome is there in the first place. The race is called the Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy. Trans Gulf Electromechanical Construction is part of the Dubai-based Al Naboodah Group, which sponsored all the racing on Thursday’s program. Al Naboodah and its subsidiaries played a key role in the construction of the Meydan complex that includes the racecourse. The... ...

Arabian Race at Santa Anita Approved

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 25, 2016) — The California Horse Racing Board Feb. 25 approved a proposal from Santa Anita Park to offer gambling on an Arabian race in April, with pending legislation on the topic expected to pass soon in Sacramento. Santa Anita representative Scott Daruty said a group from Abu Dhabi is willing to contribute $175,000 to a potential April 2 race, with $100,000 going to the purse and $75,000 going to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys’ Fund. The pending legislation, AB 558, would allow Santa Anita to conduct six Arabian races a year with wagering, as long as it doesn’t conflict with the Northern California fair circuit, which also puts on races for the breed, and gets approval from the CHRB and the Thoroughbred owners of California. But there were still concerns expressed on the board and by industry stakeholders about how Santa Anita should go about carding the Arabian race during its Thoroughbred meeting. “I don’t have a problem with this, per se. What I would have... ...

California Chrome Wins in Dubai

By Bloodhorse.com DUBAI, U.A.E. (Feb. 25, 2016) — California Chrome   appears to be going into the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (UAE-I) in top form after cruising to an easy two-length victory in the $143,000 Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy Handicap Feb. 25 at Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates. With Victor Espinoza sitting chilly, California Chrome tracked two- or three-wide in the far turn just behind early leader Success Story, a Korean-bred who had not previously placed in a stakes. When asked just a bit in early stretch, the 2014 Horse of the Year quickly opened up on the over-matched field and waltzed to the wire. The winning effort marks a second straight stakes score for California Chrome, who opened his 5-year-old season for trainer Art Sherman with a clear victory the San Pasqual Stakes (gr. Eventful Workout for Smokey Image

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2016) — Smokey Image just seems to find trouble working recently in the mornings at Santa Anita Park, and although that might make trainer Carla Gaines uncomfortable in the moment, it may end up being a blessing in disguise. Encountering traffic in training may prepare the California-bred son of Southern Image   for potential trouble on the Triple Crown trail. The morning of Feb. 21, things didn’t go quite as planned for the second week in a row. Irvin Racing Stable’s chestnut colt was supposed to trail a workmate by two lengths on the outside, but jockey Victor Espinoza had to make a decision in the backstretch when some interference entered their path. The pair moved to the inside to avoid a potential collision and worked along the rail inside his workmate. Barretts Sets Sale Calendar

DEL MAR, Calif. (Feb. 11, 2016) — The Barretts sales calendar will again feature an August selected yearling sale at Del Mar and a Fall yearling sale in October. Last year’s select sale was held after the races at Del Mar’s Surfside RacePlace ITW, but this year’s sale will be conducted during daylight hours on Tuesday, August 30th. Barretts general manager Kim Lloyd: “Despite the fact that we had an all-time California yearling record median sales price in our inaugural August sale last year, it made for too long of a day for both buyers and consignors. The move to a dark day of racing will benefit everyone involved in this sale.” Due to stabling concerns in Southern California resulting from the Breeders’ Cup, the October Yearling Sale will be held at the Los Angeles Fairgrounds in Pomona on Monday, October 17th. Yearlings will be stabled in the Barretts barns. Nominations for the Select Yearling Sale close April 1, 2016. ...

Burton Johnson

By Emily Shields The adage goes, “How can you tell if a pilot is in the room? He’ll tell you.” While JetBlue pilot Burton Johnson still enjoys his job, he has a new passion to discuss to anyone who will listen: horse racing. His favorite racing-related topic? Ultimate Eagle, his young stallion whose first foals are yearlings this season. “I had no connection to horse racing,” Johnson said. “It’s the kind of sport where you are either born into it or you’re rich enough to get involved.” A friend of Johnson’s urged him to visit the racetrack and mentioned meeting up with another friend, Santa Anita-based trainer Mike Pender. “It turned out we already knew each other,” Johnson said. “I said, ‘I went to kindergarten with that guy!’ Sure enough, around the corner comes the Mike Pender I knew.” Johnson immediately took to the sport, falling madly in love and devouring all the information he could find. But when Pender asked why Johnson didn’t buy into a racehorse, Johnson replied,... ...

Sleep Apnea Tools Might Help Foals

By Paulick Report For many foals born on farms too remote to easily access an equine hospital with ventilators and round-the-clock care, the inability to catch their breath can spell big trouble. The Horse reports that a group of Australian veterinarians have recently modified a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to help foals breathe better. This machine could allow veterinarians to provide respiratory support in the field, without sending the neonatal foal to a hospital. At the 2015 American Association of Equine Practitioners Convention, Rosemary McKean, BVetBio/BVSc (Hons. 1), explained the system’s design, which utilizes a human sleep apnea machine attached to an equine anesthesia mask. The machine uses mild air pressure to keep the airways open, which can help prevent airway collapse, decrease the effort needed to take a breath, increase oxygenation and reduce lung inflammation. The Horse reports that the CPAP research team determined that: The system was effective and had no adverse effects on the foals’ heart rates, blood pressure, or other measurements Treatment improved foals’ oxygen extraction... ...

‘Chrome Owners Sell Share

By Paulick Report In a move that both parties hope will improve his future success as a sire, co-owners Taylor Made Farm and Perry Martin both gave up 10 percent of their share in champion California Chrome. According to Thoroughbred Racing Commentary, 10 unnamed breeders were sold a two percent share of the future stallion, which would entitle them to two lifetime breeding rights as well as a percentage of his earnings over the rest of his career. “To allow them to come in,” said Martin, “we made them promise they would send two of their very best mares to California Chrome. So we’re not only looking toward his future at the racetrack, but his future as a sire as well and we brought on a whole bunch of excited partners in the process.” Set to enter stud in 2017, California Chrome has a few more conquests to make before he retires, including the March 26 Dubai World Cup. The $10 million (US) purse in that race would allow new... ...

Black Savors Biggest Training Win

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 2, 2016) — One of America’s top apprentice jockeys in the early 1980s, Kenny Black was at times overcome with emotion yesterday following his biggest training achievement to date–a brilliant 3 ¼ length win in Saturday’s $250,000 California Cup Turf Classic by Old English Rancho-bred What a View, who was ridden by Kent Desormeaux. What made the win especially emotional was the fact that E.W. “Bud” Johnston, who had headed the farm’s breeding and racing operation (which was founded in California in 1948 by his father, E.B. “The Pie Man” Johnston and his wife, Betty) dating back to 1957, passed away unexpectedly one day shy of his 78th birthday last year on May 5. “I’ll be forever grateful to Buddy Johnston and his family for the opportunity they’ve given me,” said Black, who was hired by Johnston as the farm’s private trainer following the retirement of longtime conditioner Don Warren last year. “Buddy has had his horses here in the same stalls since... ...

Los Angeles Times on Cal-breds

By John Cherwa Los Angeles Times ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 1, 2016) — The numbers are startling, the reality is staggering. If California’s first-class horse racing tracks are to survive, they are in large part dependent on a third-place breeding program. A track such as Santa Anita needs inventory, and if it didn’t have California breds running, it probably would be racing only two days a week. Under that scenario, it wouldn’t be long before the track would be turned into a residential or retail development. Or a sports stadium. Doug Burge, president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Assn., took up the challenge of figuring out a way to essentially bribe people to breed, buy and race here. “We have these carrots we put out there to give people a reason to breed in California,” he said. Among those are a $30-million program of incentives, awards and purses that go to California breds racing here. Part of that is the Golden State Series of 40 stakes races with at least $6... ...

Cal Cup Stable Notes — Friday

From Santa Anita Publicity UNBEATEN SMOKEY IMAGE TRIES TWO TURNS IN CAL CUP DERBY Undefeated Smokey Image seeks his sixth straight victory and his first for Carla Gaines when the son of 2004 Santa Anita Handicap winner Southern Image goes two turns for the first time in Saturday’s $250,000 California Cup Derby at 1 1/16 miles. “He’s been here since the first week in November,” Gaines said of the chestnut colt owned by Betty Irvin of Pacific Palisades, who campaigns as Irvin Racing Stable. Smokey Image won his first four races by daylight margins, and his last, the seven furlong Golden State Juvenile at Del Mar on Oct. 30, by three-quarters of a length after he bobbled at the start and steadied at the 5/16 marker. “We have a good feeling about his going two turns,” Gaines said. “We’ll find out Saturday. His pedigree indicates he’ll do it and we’re hoping he’ll improve going two turns, but if doesn’t, he’s still a good sprinter. He’s always galloped out beautifully from... ...
