Rail for ‘Chrome in Awesome Again

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 28, 2016) — Art Sherman was a swirling mixture of exasperation and confidence when he learned of California Chrome  ‘s draw for the $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes (gr. I) Oct. 1 at Santa Anita Park. On one hand, the trainer could not be more sanguine about his chestnut superstar, coming off arguably the most impressive win of his career in the TVG Pacific Classic (gr. I). On the other hand, he’s tired of drawing the rail, where the 2014 Horse of the Year will be for the 1 1/8-mile test and last prep for the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I). The inside post in a 1 1/4-mile race like the Pacific Classic is a bit different than in a 1 1/8-mile event, especially with the presence of Dortmund just to his outside in post 2. The massive son of Big Brown   gave California Chrome his toughest test of his current five-race win streak when he finished just a half-length back in the 1 1/16-mile San Diego... ...

Hovdey on California Chrome

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 28, 2016) — There is an old-fashioned reliability about California Chrome that is taken for granted in this age of speed figures and big-day performances. Put it this way: In a career of 23 races dating to his maiden special weight debut at Hollywood Park on April 26, 2013, California Chrome has never missed a start while under the training and management of Art Sherman and his crew. The only time California Chrome had to bow out of a commitment was at Royal Ascot in June 2015, when he had been removed from the Sherman stable and trained in Newmarket, England. California Chrome’s scratch from the Prince of Wales’s Stakes was a humiliating blow for Sherman, whose name was still associated with the champion despite an absence of more than two months from his care. Once California Chrome was returned to the Sherman stable last October, Sherman laid out a campaign for 2016 by the seasons, each season geared toward winning a major... ...

Espinoza: ‘Chrome Never Been Better

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 21, 2016) — Victor Espinoza, regular rider of 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome  , said the 5-year-old California-bred has never been doing better as he prepares for a start in the Awesome Again Stakes (gr. I) Oct. 1 at Santa Anita Park. Espinoza says California Chrome is better than ever, but walked the tightrope when asked whether his “Slipped Saddle Saga” in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) March 26 or his spectacular, front-running, five-length triumph in the Pacific Classic (gr. I) Aug. 20 was his best race. “He ran insane in Dubai,” the gregarious and ever-accommodating Espinoza said by phone from New York where he was visiting family. “Going a mile and a quarter on a track a world away with the saddle slipping and running the way he did was amazing. “The saddle slipped all the way to his hind end. The girth was fully up on his hips. It was tough for me to handle, but we got it done (winning comfortably... ...

It’s like a brand new putting green and it’s only going to get better. ‘Chrome Works on ‘Chrome Day

By Bloodhorse.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Sept. 10, 2016) — On his day, at his home track, and a bit out of his normal workout routine, California Chrome   still gave trainer Art Sherman just what he wanted Sept. 10 at Los Alamitos Race Course. With his normal 5:30 a.m. work time moved back to 7:30 to accommodate a host of fans out for California Chrome Day in the City of Cypress, the 2014 Horse of the Year covered five furlongs in 1:00 4/5. Sherman watched through his binoculars from the Los Alamitos grandstand, because his normal perch on the patio at Schwanie’s at the Gap was overflowing with “Chromies,” but the trainer liked what he saw. “He went just the way I wanted,” Sherman said. “He was relaxed and he doesn’t need much. He’s been running great and he’s right on schedule.” The son of Lucky Pulpit   pulled a little with an eagerness to run under exercise rider Dihigi Gladney in the backstretch, but settled soon after to run fractions of :24... ...

We’ve cataloged 240 horses this year. This is all we can handle given the stabling situation at the Alameda County fairgrounds. “The sale is getting tremendous support, not just from people in the north but breeders and farms in the central and south as well. The last couple of years, it’s been strong and well attended.” In 2015, the... ...

Sherman Leans Toward Lasix for ‘Chrome

By Bloodhorse.com DEL MAR, Calif. (July 17, 2016) –Although Art Sherman was considering running California Chrome   in the San Diego Handicap (gr. II) and Pacific Classic (gr. I) at Del Mar this summer without Lasix, following two standout runs in Dubai without the anti-bleeding medication, the trainer said July 17 he’ll likely use it as a precaution. “I’m not 100% sure yet, but I’m leaning toward giving him 5 cc, which is about as small amount as you can give,” Sherman said a day after the 2014 Horse of the Year wowed in his final breeze for the July 23 San Diego. “It’s kinda a precautionary thing. Down here, with the air so heavy—we haven’t made up our minds completely, but I’m leaning that way.” BALAN: California Chrome Brilliant in Del Mar Breeze Sherman said he was considering passing on the race-day Lasix shot simply because the son of Lucky Pulpit   ran so well without it in his two Dubai starts this year, capped by a sparkling victory in the... ...

‘Chrome Breezes in :59 1/5 for San Diego

From DMTC Publicity DEL MAR, Calif. (July 16, 2016) — Champion California Chrome worked a sharp five furlongs in :59 1/5 Saturday morning at Del Mar on a racetrack cleared of all but a few other runners he’s likely to face in his comeback race in the San Diego Handicap here next Saturday. The handsome chestnut had regular exercise rider Dihigi Gladney in the tack as they took flight from the five-furlong pole on an overcast morning alongside the Pacific and went through splits of :12, :23 4/5, :35 3/5 and :46 4/5 en route to the final clocking. He galloped out another furlong in 1:13. Two Del Mar’s clockers timed the 5-year-old California-bred winner of more than $12.5 million in purses in the same fractions and they agreed that the horse had earned a coveted “B” for “breezing,” a term reserved for only the easiest of works.  Gladney never pushed on his charge and stood up in the saddle as they went past the finish line. The clocking crew... ...

Hovdey on Art Sherman

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com DEL MAR, Calif. (July 15, 2016) — The Thoroughbred brand known as California Chrome clambered down the ramp of the Hubbard transport van and lifted his head to the scent of the surrounding horses in their stalls. Raul Rodriguez, his wiry groom, kept a firm hold as the horse let his legs unwind from the two-hour freeway slog from Los Alamitos, 75 miles to the north. It was Wednesday, Barn CC on the Del Mar backstretch, and Art Sherman was ready to rumble. “Look at that – barn double C,” the trainer said, trailing his chestnut star. “We’ve got everything covered.” California Chrome had not been at Del Mar since Thanksgiving weekend of 2014, when he won the Hollywood Derby over Canadian Horse of the Year Lexie Lou. Since that distant November, the 5-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit has been back and forth to Dubai twice, trained on the gallops of Newmarket Heath, and enjoyed two separate sessions of recovery and relaxation at Taylor Made Farm... ...

‘Chrome Works in Company at Los Al

By Bloodhorse.com CYPRESS, Calif. (July 9, 2016) — Art Sherman didn’t get what he wanted out of California Chrome   during his workout July 2, so he made sure he got it July 9, in the chestnut’s final drill at Los Alamitos Race Course before shipping south to Del Mar for the July 23 San Diego Handicap (gr. II). In a scheduled mile work in company, the 5-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit   broke four lengths behind stablemate Mishegas and tossed his head exiting the first turn, showing an eagerness to run. He settled into stride in the backstretch before moving up in the far turn, but was still under a tight hold from exercise rider Dihigi Gladney approaching the eighth pole, and hadn’t passed Mishegas when Sherman had enough. “Let him go!” the trainer yelled from his perch at Schwanies At The Gap, Los Alamitos’ trackside café. The exercise rider released his hold, asked California Chrome a bit, and the 2014 Horse of the Year responded. California Chrome was credited with a mile in 1:39... ...
