By Bloodhorse.com DUBAI, U.A.E. Smokey Image Finds Morning Competition

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 27, 2016) — California-bred Smokey Image and Danzing Candy put on an unintentional preview of the March 12 San Felipe (gr. II) during their morning workouts Feb. 27 at Santa Anita Park. In the last workout session of the day, the two Triple Crown hopefuls found each other. Danzing Candy, with Mike Smith aboard, and workmate Radio Silent broke first, but Smokey Image and Victor Espinoza were right behind. A little rank early and four lengths back, not overjoyed with the dirt in his face, Smokey Image moved three wide alongside the Cliff Sise-trained pair through most of the turn but settled in the stretch and cruised to hit the wire in 1:12 1/5, about two lengths behind Danzing Candy. The time was tied for the fastest drill at the distance, among 30 workers at six furlongs Saturday morning. Cautious Giant also worked 1:12 1/5. “Do you believe we did that again?” trainer Carla Gaines said to Espinoza after the work, referencing the Southern Image  ... ...

How Sensational Star Stakes Got Its Name

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 26, 2016) — It’s approaching 30 years since Bill Spawr claimed Sensational Star for $32,000 with the hopes of turning him into a stakes winner. Spawr wasn’t disappointed. Sensational Star would go on to become a graded stakes winner under Spawr’s tutelage and retired with a career record of 39 starts, 13 wins, 11 seconds and $442,445 earned, this in the pre-inflation era. Saturday’s $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes, for Golden State Series eligibles, is named for Spawr’s clever claim. Spawr is known for his keen eye at the claim box. His most accomplished bargain was Exchange Rate, taken for $50,000. She went on to win three Grade I stakes and earn more than a million dollars. Spawr, a native of Bell, California, who turned 76 last Dec. 13, had his day in the sun with 2011 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Amazombie, who would go on to win an Eclipse Award. Claimed in 1988, Sensational Star later won the Pat O’Brien Breeders’ Cup Handicap... ...

Eventful Workout for Smokey Image

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2016) — Smokey Image just seems to find trouble working recently in the mornings at Santa Anita Park, and although that might make trainer Carla Gaines uncomfortable in the moment, it may end up being a blessing in disguise. Encountering traffic in training may prepare the California-bred son of Southern Image   for potential trouble on the Triple Crown trail. The morning of Feb. 21, things didn’t go quite as planned for the second week in a row. Irvin Racing Stable’s chestnut colt was supposed to trail a workmate by two lengths on the outside, but jockey Victor Espinoza had to make a decision in the backstretch when some interference entered their path. The pair moved to the inside to avoid a potential collision and worked along the rail inside his workmate. BALAN: Smokey Image Logs First Work for San Felipe “It was so close,” Espinoza said after the five-furlong drill in 1:00 2/5. Smokey Image did just fine after that, though. He moved past... ...

Smokey Image Works for San Felipe

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 15, 2016) –Trainer Carla Gaines had California-bred Smokey Image breeze during the last workout session Feb. 15 for a specific reason. She wanted the undefeated colt to run an easy half-mile for his first timed drill in preparation for the March 12 San Felipe Stakes (gr. II). But Irvin Racing Stable’s chestnut found company anyway in the turn of his four-furlong breeze, as he and jockey Victor Espinoza moved inside of a three-furlong worker and stuck with their unexpected rival to the wire, covering the distance in :47 1/5. “I purposely worked him at 9 a.m. on a Monday,” Gaines said after the drill. “I was just looking for a solo breeze and that horse jumped in with him. But, you know what? He was still sitting there waiting for Victor to do something.” The time was a bit faster than Gaines wanted, but with a gallop out to five furlongs in :59 4/5, it was clear the time had more to do with Smokey... ...

Tax Depreciation Poised for Renewal

From NTRA             LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 16, 2015) – Important tax incentives for horse owners including a key provision that extends three-year tax depreciation for all racehorses through 2016 were finalized late on Tuesday by Republican and Democratic negotiators in the House as part of comprehensive budget and tax legislation which Congress will likely pass to conclude the year. Maintaining the three-year recovery period for racehorse purchases has been a top legislative priority for the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) since the provision’s initial enactment as part of the 2008 Farm Bill.  Most recently, the NTRA successfully secured inclusion of three-year depreciation in the 2014 tax extenders package that expired at the end of 2014. “A multi-year extension of three-year tax depreciation for racehorses is welcome news for Thoroughbred owners and breeders,” said Alex Waldrop, NTRA President and CEO. “Accelerated cost recovery encourages investment and creates jobs in Thoroughbred racing while the multi-year extension of this tax incentive helps owners plan for the future.” The provision allows taxpayers to depreciate, on a three-year... ...

‘Chrome Comeback Ahead of Schedule

From DMTC Publicity DEL MAR, Calif. He’ll probably go another quarter mile and gallop out three-eighths like he did before, but gallop out a little stronger this time.” The initial goal for the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, who closed out his Horse of the Year campaign with a win in the Hollywood Derby here in November, is a return to the $10 million Dubai World Cup in March. California Chrome was the runner-up to Prince Bishop in the world’s richest race earlier this year. “When he gets back from Dubai, the Pacific Classic is the next... ...

By Bloodhorse.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Nov. 14, 2015) — California Chrome went through another easy breeze the morning of Nov. 14 at Los Alamitos Race Course, with the real work on the horizon. California Chrome Breezes at Los Al

By Bloodhorse.com CYPRESS, Calif. Trainer Art Sherman, with a small entourage of family and friends, clocked the 4-year-old Lucky Pulpit colt in :25 flat, with a gallop out to three furlongs in :37 and change, while Los Alamitos clockers timed him in :26 3/5 in preparation for the San Pasqual Stakes (gr.
