2-Year-Olds Sizzle in Barretts Preview

From Barretts DEL MAR, Calif. (Mar. 28, 2016) –With a cool breeze wafting over the Del Mar racetrack, a half-dozen 2-year-olds zipped a furlong in :09 4/5 during the March 28 under tack preview for the upcoming Barretts select 2-year-old sale. The auction is set for March 30 at Del Mar, beginning at 2 p.m. PDT. “The 2-year-olds just loved the surface,” said Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts Sales. “The colts and fillies were out there having a big time. It’s a very kind track that the horses were getting a hold of very, very well.” Three colts and three fillies each turned in :09 4/5 for an eighth of a mile breeze, and they came from four different consignors. All six had gone through yearling sales the previous year. The most expensive pinhook of the group was Hip 71, a City Zip   colt from John Brocklebank’s consignment. Vern Dickman’s Dickman Legacy Ranch bought the youngster for $165,000 at last year’s Keeneland September yearling sale. The Kentucky-bred colt is... ...

World Cup Report About ‘Chrome

By Bloodhorse.com DUBAI, U.A.E. (Mar. 24, 2016) –Stand on the Meydan surface and soak up the morning sun, and watch California Chrome   stride out onto the racetrack. There’s his signature ear prick, a turn of the head toward snapping cameras—the look of eagles. It’s looming, Chrome’s chance at redemption, as these last few days to the $10 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) count down. He comes in a fresher, stronger horse after his runner-up finish to Prince Bishop in the World Cup of 2015, but faces a slew of tough challengers including Godolphin’s own grade I winner Frosted. Anticipation is mounting, and at the center of it all stands this 2014 Horse of the Year, the one who charmed thousands through his Triple Crown campaign as a 3-year-old and somehow, in a world of brief campaigns and early stud deals, still races on at 5. NOVAK: California Chrome Draws Wide for World Cup You’ve heard of “Chromies,” those zealous folks who track the every move of the Art Sherman trainee.... ...

California Chrome Draws Outside Post

By Bloodhorse.com DUBAI, U.A.E. (Mar. 23, 2016) — California Chrome   drew wide for his March 26 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) quest, a bid to go one better after running second in 2015. But if trainer Art Sherman is bothered by post 11 in a field of 12, he’s not letting it show. “Listen, the outside is good, if you’ve got the horse, and I hope we do,” Sherman said March 23, as he and other connections of the 2014 Horse of the Year waited until second-last to see their runner’s name drawn for post position selection for the $10 million Dubai World Cup. “There wasn’t too much I could do about the draw. He’s got tactical speed, so I’m not going to worry about it.” Grade I winners Frosted, Mshawish, Hoppertunity, and Keen Ice join the charismatic chestnut in representing the U.S. in the 21st edition of the World Cup. Last year California Chrome broke from post 9 and was beaten 2 3/4 lengths by Prince Bishop. “We lost ground on... ...

‘Chrome ‘Perfect’ for Dubai World Cup

By Bloodhorse.com DUBAI, U.A.E. (Mar. 22, 2016) — After flying from California to Dubai, trainer Art Sherman had trouble sleeping, which allowed him to get to the barn and see California Chrome   earlier than anticipated. Shortly after 2 a.m. local time March 22, Sherman showed up at the 5-year-old’s stall and fed him a couple of cookies. In addition to the colt’s strong appetite, Sherman liked what he saw in advance of the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (UAE-I) March 26, “Either I’m getting smaller or he’s getting bigger,” Sherman said on a National Thoroughbred Racing Association conference call March 22. “There’s been such a big change in him. You wouldn’t recognize him now from how he looked as a 3-year-old. He’s turned into a great individual.” Following a 2015 season that was plagued by questionable decisions by his ownership and a variety of ailments, California Chrome has a new ownership group and a new lease on life. He was given time off for rest and relaxation at... ...

Smokey Image Adds to McCaffery Legacy

By Nicole Russo, DRF.com Nearly a decade after the death of prominent California owner, breeder, and racing-industry philanthropist Trudy McCaffery, her legacy lives on – both on the track and off. The undefeated California-bred Smokey Image hails from a female family cultivated by McCaffery, who died at age 62 in 2007 following a battle with cancer. The colt will take his first shot against open company Saturday in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita – the same race that his grandsire, Free House, McCaffery’s favorite runner, won nearly two decades ago. Watching intently around the country will be dozens of racing-industry professionals who are alumni of Kids to the Cup, the organization McCaffery founded to expose young people to racing. Many have gone on to follow their dreams of working in the industry. “She genuinely believed that giving young people access to the barns, the horsemen, and the inner workings of the sport would give us the courage and contacts to pursue our dreams, and I think... ...

Danzing Candy, with Mike Smith aboard, and workmate Radio Silent broke first, but Smokey Image and Victor Espinoza were right behind. A little rank early and four lengths back, not overjoyed with the dirt in his face, Smokey Image moved three wide alongside the Cliff Sise-trained pair through most of the turn but settled in the stretch and cruised to hit the wire in 1:12 1/5, about two lengths behind Danzing Candy. The time was tied for the fastest drill at the distance, among 30 workers at six furlongs Saturday morning. Cautious Giant also worked 1:12 1/5. “Do you believe we did that again?” trainer Carla Gaines said to Espinoza after the work, referencing the Southern Image  ... ...

Eventful Workout for Smokey Image

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2016) — Smokey Image just seems to find trouble working recently in the mornings at Santa Anita Park, and although that might make trainer Carla Gaines uncomfortable in the moment, it may end up being a blessing in disguise. Encountering traffic in training may prepare the California-bred son of Southern Image   for potential trouble on the Triple Crown trail. The morning of Feb. 21, things didn’t go quite as planned for the second week in a row. Irvin Racing Stable’s chestnut colt was supposed to trail a workmate by two lengths on the outside, but jockey Victor Espinoza had to make a decision in the backstretch when some interference entered their path. The pair moved to the inside to avoid a potential collision and worked along the rail inside his workmate. Smokey Image Works for San Felipe

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 15, 2016) –Trainer Carla Gaines had California-bred Smokey Image breeze during the last workout session Feb. 15 for a specific reason. She wanted the undefeated colt to run an easy half-mile for his first timed drill in preparation for the March 12 San Felipe Stakes (gr. II). But Irvin Racing Stable’s chestnut found company anyway in the turn of his four-furlong breeze, as he and jockey Victor Espinoza moved inside of a three-furlong worker and stuck with their unexpected rival to the wire, covering the distance in :47 1/5. “I purposely worked him at 9 a.m. on a Monday,” Gaines said after the drill. “I was just looking for a solo breeze and that horse jumped in with him. But, you know what? He was still sitting there waiting for Victor to do something.” The time was a bit faster than Gaines wanted, but with a gallop out to five furlongs in :59 4/5, it was clear the time had more to do with Smokey... ...

According to Thoroughbred Racing Commentary, 10 unnamed breeders were sold a two percent share of the future stallion, which would entitle them to two lifetime breeding rights as well as a percentage of his earnings over the rest of his career. “To allow them to come in,” said Martin, “we made them promise they would send two of their very best mares to California Chrome. So we’re not only looking toward his future at the racetrack, but his future as a sire as well and we brought on a whole bunch of excited partners in the process.” Set to enter stud in 2017, California Chrome has a few more conquests to make before he retires, including the March 26 Dubai World Cup. Smokey Image won his first four races by daylight margins, and his last, the seven furlong Golden State Juvenile at Del Mar on Oct. 30, by three-quarters of a length after he bobbled at the start and steadied at the 5/16 marker. “We have a good feeling about his going two turns,” Gaines said. “We’ll find out Saturday. His pedigree indicates he’ll do it and we’re hoping he’ll improve going two turns, but if doesn’t, he’s still a good sprinter. He’s always galloped out beautifully from... ...
