Hovdey on Los Alamitos

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com CYPRESS, Calif. (July 1, 2014) — Brad McKinzie, point man for the brave new racing adventure at Los Alamitos, was cracking wise about the mini-meets his track will be presenting this season, beginning Thursday with the eight-day Summer Thoroughbred Festival that runs all the way to July 13, better known as a week from Sunday. “Two weeks we can handle,” McKinzie said. “It’s that middle week we’ll be running in December that will present the real challenge. You just hope you can keep up the enthusiasm.” Since McKinzie said that, tongue firmly planted in his cheek, the Los Alamitos Racing Association has added another package of Thoroughbred dates in the Sept. 4-23 window formerly occupied by the L.A. County Fair. Led by its owner, Dr. Ed Allred, the track is stepping into some of the racing and training breach left by the closure of Hollywood Park as well as the end of live racing at Fairplex Park. As a marriage of necessity between the Quarter Horse... ...

‘Chrome Vacations at Harris Farms

By Fresno Bee COALINGA, Calif. (June 29, 2014) — He is a rock star and, yes, he does know it. California Chrome, the colt who was bred, foaled and spent much of his first year at Harris Farms in Coalinga, won the Kentucky Derby and then the Preakness Stakes and was just two lengths from becoming the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years in the Belmont Stakes, is back “home.” Does he know just how much of a thrill he gave a nation of followers wishing and willing horse racing history? Dave McGlothlin, the general manager of the Horse Division at Harris Farms, chuckled a bit at the question as he followed the 3-year-old colt back to the barn the other day. California Chrome might not know the numbers — some $3.5 million in purse money won. But he smelled the roses and heard the thunderous crowds and all of that. “Oh,” McGlothlin said, with a wry smile, “he knows.” Right now, though, California Chrome is more like a... ...

Tribal Gal Wins Oak Tree Distaff

PLEASANTON, Calif. (June 28, 2014) — Tribal Gal ($28) proved the quickest early and was uncatchable as she sped to an easy victory Saturday in the $100,870 Oak Tree Distaff for Golden State Series eligible filly and mares at the Oak Tree at Pleasanton meet. “She broke in a bit and then had the six [Handful of Pearls] beside her, but I just let her do her thing,” said 18-year-old Ricardo Gonzalez, who notched his first stakes victory after a pair of seconds at the Golden Gate Fields meeting. Tribal Gal, a 4-year-old daughter of Tribal Rules, set the pace in the California Wine Stakes here last year before fading. But she was sharp and at the top of her game in Saturday’s Cal-bred sprint stakes. She led Handful of Pearls by a head through a 21.65-second opening quarter as Gonzalez simply sat still. She was a length ahead at the quarter pole and still running strong as Handful of Pearls, a claimer who gave Russell Baze his 12,000th victory... ...

Double Duty for Burgart

By DRF.com CYPRESS, Calif. (June 27, 2014) — Ed Burgart will be a familiar voice to Southern California racing fans over the next two weeks. Burgart, who has called Quarter Horse races at Los Alamitos since 1981, will call the action for the summer Thoroughbred meeting at Los Alamitos that begins a two-week run Thursday. On five nights over the next two weeks, Burgart also will call the evening races for Quarter Horses and lower-level Thoroughbreds at Los Alamitos. It is a scenario familiar to Burgart, 62. In the autumn of both 1994 and 1995, Burgart pulled doubleheader duty during the day at Hollywood Park and in the evenings at Los Alamitos when Trevor Denman was vacationing from his position as the Hollywood Park announcer in those years. “I did doubleheaders on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays,” Burgart said Thursday. “I remember the last day, I called 10 races at Hollywood and 15 races at Los Alamitos. That’s when we ran the Champion of Champions on closing night [of the Quarter... ...

TOC Honors Ed Allred

From TOC Dr. Edward Allred has been selected by the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) to receive the 2013 Ed Friendly Industry Service Award. The award is presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions and service in the California Thoroughbred racing industry. Allred owns Los Alamitos Race Course, which will host its inaugural Thoroughbred race meet July 3-13.  Los Alamitos, the home of dual classic winner California Chrome, also will race the L.A. County Fair dates in September and a three-week Thoroughbred meet in December. Allred’s innovative insurance plan for trainers, FinishLine Self-Insurance Group, has been instrumental in reducing the burden of rising workers’ compensation rates, keeping the cost of training horses in California affordable for both Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred trainers and owners. When California Thoroughbred racing found itself in a tight spot for stabling after the close of Hollywood Park, Allred stepped up to provide 700 Thoroughbred stalls to be used for year-round training as well as an expanded one-mile racetrack at Los Alamitos. “We are very pleased to... ...

Richard Kritzski

Richard Kritzski (R) accepts congratulations from Mel Stute and Joe Talamo after win by Awesome Return.   Three days after Awesome Broad dropped a bay son of Decarchy at Magali Farms, farm manager Tom Hudson turned to breeder Richard Kritzski and proclaimed, “We’ve got a stakes winner here.” Hudson’s declaration has already come true, as Kritzski’s Awesome Return is now a dual stakes winner. He is also another page in the story of Kritzski’s rise through Thoroughbred ownership, which started as recently as 1999 and has since been a bit of a whirlwind. Kritzski’s close friend Gary Brown can take the majority of the credit for getting Kritzski involved in the sport. In 1998 Brown was campaigning a handsome 2-year-old son of Broad Brush, Mr. Broad Blade, who broke his maiden stylishly by three lengths at Hollywood Park Nov. 29. As happens with most flashy juveniles winning over a route of ground, the victory thrust Mr. Broad Blade onto the Triple Crown trail. Kritzski joined Brown for that ride and... ...

CHRB Limits Corticosteroid Use

From CHRB SACRAMENTO, Calif. (June 25, 2014) – The California Horse Racing Board (CHRB/Board) adopted regulations June 19 to limit the use of corticosteroids in racing horses and to impose further restrictions on shockwave therapy. The move is part of an aggressive effort by the Board to protect horses and riders. The changes are expected to go into effect in October following final regulatory review. “The people who play by the rules should have the best shot, not the people who don’t play by the rules,” said Board Chairman Chuck Winner. “This is the way it is going to be from now on, and we’re going to work very hard to make sure the integrity of the sport is protected.” The Board voted to set limits on certain medications consistent with the national uniform medication program. The most significant of these limits is for corticosteroids, potent anti-inflammatory medications. When used improperly, corticosteroids could mask serious injury from the examining veterinarians and allow injured horses to compete. The restrictions will fundamentally... ...

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (June 22, 2014)—Trainer Doug O’Neill, owner Paul Reddam and jockey Mario Gutierrez had another on Sunday at Santa Anita. Another stakes win that is, as Gutierrez guided California-bred Wake Up Nick to a gutty three quarter length tally in the $125,000 Santa Anita Juvenile, as the chestnut colt by Cindago scurried 5 ½ furlongs in 1:04.28 while withstanding the late charge of Story to Tell and Joe Talamo. Hovdey on California Chrome

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com COALINGA, Calif. (June 19, 2014) — The sights along Interstate 5 in California’s Central Valley near Fresno include almond orchards, cow pastures, and acres upon acres of barren agricultural ground, rendered fallow by the West’s terrible drought. There are hidden treasures, to be sure – a reservoir here, a winery there – but for the next month and a half, travelers on that stretch of highway will be oblivious to the real main attraction, with America’s most famous race horse living the life of Riley just a few miles off the main road. California Chrome arrived Wednesday at the horse division of Harris Farms. The occasion marked one year, three months, and 13 days after General Manager Dave McGlothlin, farm trainer Per Antonsen, and the rest of the John Harris crew bade farewell to the white-trimmed chestnut with the wide blaze as a 2-year-old March 5, 2013, bound for the Hollywood Park stable of Art and Alan Sherman. Hovdey on Oak Tree at Pleasanton

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com PLEASANTON, Calif. (June 18, 2014) — The rest of the Thoroughbred world is forgiven if it views the current state of the California racing and training landscape as an elaborate game of pick-up sticks, in which all the pieces are gathered together, then tossed on the table, to be played wherever they lay. Santa Anita Park is squeezing out the last two weeks of its first marathon meet, during which it was able to leverage the Triple Crown appearances of local hero California Chrome into three great days, but not much else. Fairplex Park management wants out of the horse-racing business – the disposition of its dates was on the California Horse Racing Board agenda this week – while Los Alamitos wants in, big time, and continues to build barns to house the stables soon to be displaced at both Fairplex and Santa Anita, which will be closing soon in order to renovate its main track for the fifth time in the last eight years. Don’t... ...

Breeders’ Cups to Santa Anita, Del Mar?

By courier-journal.com LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 17, 2014) — The Breeders’ Cup is returning to Kentucky after what will be a four-year absence — but not to Churchill Downs. Instead, the 2015 Breeders’ Cup will be at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington. Lexington-based Breeders’ Cup Ltd. is expected to announce this month that the next three sites after this year’s running at Santa Anita Park in California, according to two sources with knowledge of the plans. Next year would be at Keeneland, followed by a return to Santa Anita in Arcadia in 2016 and then Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in San Diego in 2017, they said. A Breeders’ Cup spokesman has said the organization isn’t commenting, and several board members declined to discuss plans when called individually. Among them, Chairman Bill Farish of Lanes End Farm said an announcement is close and said it would be around June 24. It would be the first time the fall thoroughbred championships would be held at Keeneland or Del Mar — both of which... ...

California Chrome’s Swaps Connection

By Bloodhorse.com Just more than 60 years ago a trim California-bred with unorthodox connections came East to shock the racing establishment by scoring an upset win in the 1955 Kentucky Derby. His name was Swaps, and he took a couple of “cowboys”—owner Rex Ellsworth and trainer Mesh Tenney, whose ultra-practical style of Western horsemanship didn’t sit well with Eastern racing men and sportswriters—to the heights of American racing. Swaps also earned Horse of the Year honors as a 4-year-old in 1956. Art Sherman was along for the ride when Swaps came east to knock off Eastern favorites Nashua and Summer Tan—literally along for the ride, as he shared Swaps’ boxcar on the way to Louisville and exercised the Derby winner prior to the big race. The following year he was Swaps’ regular exercise rider, and the year after that he took out his jockey’s license. A couple of decades later he became a trainer, and that’s what he’s been doing ever since. Fast forward to 2014, and perhaps Swaps’ ghost... ...

‘Chrome to Get a Breather

By DRF.com ELMONT, N.Y. (June 8, 2014) – California Chrome emerged from Saturday’s Belmont Stakes with a minor injury to his right front hoof and will be given a lengthy rest before a scheduled return to racing this fall, trainer Art Sherman said Sunday morning at Belmont Park. “He’s good, other than having a good chunk of his quarter cut,” Sherman said. “We’ll get that healed up at the barn for two to three weeks, then stop on him for six or seven weeks, give him some pasture time. He needs a rest.” That itinerary would take California Chrome out of consideration for any major races this summer such as the Travers Stakes at Saratoga or the Pacific Classic at Del Mar. Sherman said his late-season goal with California Chrome is the Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita. “We’ll keep him in California, get him ready for the Breeders’ Cup,” Sherman said. “It’s where he runs his best races. It’s home for us.” California Chrome flew back to California... ...

California Chrome Grabbed Quarter

By DRF.com ELMONT, N.Y. (June 7, 2014) — Victor Espinoza knew early on this wasn’t going to be California Chrome’s day. Espinoza said that California Chrome didn’t show the same energy early on in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes that he had shown in winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and he trudged home in a dead-heat for fourth with Wicked Strong, two lengths behind Tonalist in the 146th Belmont Stakes. Espinoza didn’t have a concrete reason why California Chrome was flat on Saturday, but the colt was seen to have blood coming from his right front foot, known as a grabbed quarter, as he walked back through the tunnel after the race. Espinoza believes it may have occurred coming out of the starting gate. “I think he might have stepped on himself out of the gate,” Espinoza said. “I noticed when I jumped off him he was bleeding a little bit in the right front. Maybe that affected him.” ::2014 BELMONT STAKES: Recap, video, chart, and more Watching the head-on replay,... ...

‘Chrome Ready After Final Jog

By DRF.com ELMONT, N.Y. (June 7, 2014) — It’s about 5:30 a.m. the morning of the Belmont Stakes, and dual classic winner California Chrome is sauntering down the horsepath under the trees, ears pricked, seemingly unperturbed by the handful of press and well-wishers here to get one final look the morning of the most significant test of his young life. Exercise rider Willie Delgado pats the colt on the neck, then throws a thumbs-up to the rider of a passing horse who hollers a good luck wish to the horse looking to end 36 years of crushed hopes if he can sweep the Triple Crown later today. California Chrome steps onto the gap near the 10-furlong pole of the massive Belmont Park oval, turning the wrong way to jog a lap, just stretching his legs before the 1 1/2-mile Test of the Champion at about 6:52 this evening. Novak on the Belmont

By Clare Novak, Bloodhorse.com ELMONT, N.Y. (June 6, 2014) — We come to this place in search of greatness. Through the echoing halls and spacious tree-lined Belmont Park backstretch we roam, and in the days before the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) we wonder—could this horse be the one? With every potential winner, every story of assorted connections and the paths they took to get here; our faith begins to rise. Something about every Triple Crown hopeful, every year with our sport’s greatest prize on the line, gives most of us that inkling. Surely, it is time. If California Chrome gallops around the sweeping turns of Big Sandy June 7 and into hundreds upon thousands of hearts as the 12th Triple Crown winner in history and the first since 1978, it will be against the reputation of the modern Thoroughbred—that fragile beast who dazzles with great performances but just as quickly disappoints, then vanishes to greener pastures. ‘Chrome Schools at Belmont Gate

By DRF.com ELMONT, N.Y. (June 5, 2014) — California Chrome schooled at the starting gate for the second and final time June 5 at rainy Belmont Park as his date with destiny in the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (gr. I) draws closer. At 6:30 a.m., California Chrome set foot on Belmont Park’s main track and jogged approximately 1 3/8 miles clockwise before arriving at the starting gate in the 1 1/8-mile chute on the backstretch. There he stood in the gate, backed out, and began an easy 1 1/4-mile gallop outside the cones that had been placed on the muddy main track. “He was perfect in there (the gate),” said Alan Sherman, assistant to his father, trainer Art Sherman. California Chrome has won six straight races, including the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands and Preakness (both gr. I). He is attempting to become the 12th thoroughbred in history to win the Triple Crown and first since Affirmed in 1978. Sherman said California Chrome, who is owned by Steve Coburn... ...

Hovdey on California Chrome

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com ELMONT, N.Y. (June 5, 2014) — The melting point of chromium is 3,465 degrees Fahrenheit, 1,857 degrees Centigrade, or 20 minutes spent in an underground New York City garage on a warm weekday evening waiting for someone to find your rental car. If California Chrome wins the Belmont Stakes on Saturday to become the 12th winner of the Triple Crown, he will have withstood more heat and more pressure than any American Thoroughbred since Affirmed said “no means no” to Alydar 36 years ago. ::2014 BELMONT STAKES: Latest news, video, PPs, and more If California Chrome wins, he will honor the Triple Crown heartbreaks of Silver Charm being ambushed in the last yards by Touch Gold, of Real Quiet nipped at the very end by Victory Gallop, of Smarty Jones, that most generous of Thoroughbreds, fighting back a wave of attacks until he had nothing left to answer Birdstone. If California Chrome wins, he should get the key to every city with a racetrack, every town... ...

‘Chrome’s Connections Hit Big Apple

By Bloodhorse.com NEW YORK, N.Y. — On his first day ever in New York, Steve Coburn, part owner and breeder of California Chrome, was interviewed by NBC and spent the rest of the time as a tourist. “It’s been go, go, go since we got here” for Coburn and his wife, Carolyn, who took a tour of Rockefeller Center and the Empire State building on June 3. They are in the city to see California Chrome take aim at the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) June 7 at Belmont Park attempting to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. Coburn arrived in New York by jet along with trainer Art Sherman the afternoon of June 2 and spent his first night adjusting to the time change from the West Coast. Jerardi on California Chrome

By Dick Jerardi, DRF.com ELMONT, N.Y. (June 4, 2014) — I am not quite sure what Spectacular Bid, Silver Charm, Real Quiet, and Smarty Jones have to do with Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, other than that their names will get typed thousands of times this week as reasons why California Chrome can’t win. I am going to give you the most obvious reason why he can win: California Chrome is the best horse. So, let’s start there and forget the history. Whenever anybody cites history in sporting events, I cringe. I don’t care what happened between Auburn and Alabama in 1986. I want to know who is playing today. I will evaluate these players and these coaches. So, let’s evaluate the Belmont Stakes in the context of 2014. Let’s not be afraid of what happened in 1979, 1997, 1998, or 2004. California Chrome has won six consecutive stakes, four graded, three Grade 1s. He has earned three Beyer Speed Figures of 105 or more. The likely opposition has won a combined... ...

Stabling at Fairplex Park Extended

By Bloodhorse.com POMONA, Calif. (June 3, 2014) — Fairplex Park will remain open as part of Southern California’s off-site stabling through the Breeders’ Cup World Champions this fall rather than closing July 10 as earlier planned. California’s stabling and vanning committee met June 3 and agreed unanimously to the extension, in part so that local horsemen would have plenty of stabling during the Breeders’ Cup when many shippers arrive. The Breeders’ Cup is set for Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Santa Anita Park. After Betfair Hollywood Park closed last year, the horses that stabled there year-round had to find other accommodations. The industry worked to have 500 stalls available at each of three locations–Fairplex in Pomona, Los Alamitos in Cypress, and San Luis Rey Downs in Bonsall, with the idea of phasing out Fairplex as Los Alamitos and San Luis Rey Downs built additional stalls. However, during the Del Mar meeting, which will open July 17, Santa Anita will be closed for training so that it can complete construction projects that... ...

Tuesday’s ‘Chrome Report

By Bloodhorse.com ELMONT, N.Y. (June 3, 2014) — Triple Crown hopeful California Chrome went for a slow and easy gallop over the main track at Belmont Park June 3, with 77-year-old trainer Art Sherman on hand to watch after arriving from California the previous day. His stable star is aiming to become the 12th Triple Crown champion with a victory in the June 7 million Belmont Stakes (gr. I). “I haven’t been back here for a lot of years, and I rode here years ago,” said Sherman, who won more than 2,000 races as a jockey from 1957-78. “It’s changed quite a bit. I didn’t realize it was this big. After you get away from it, it’s a huge racetrack. It’s beautiful. It’s good to be back.” After schooling in the paddock, California Chrome got a hug around the neck from regular exercise rider Willie Delgado before heading to the 1 12-mile track, where he jogged a half-mile before turning around for his 2 3/8-mile gallop. “I thought he looked... ...

Lawmakers Seek Tax Clarification

From NTRA NEW YORK CITY (June 3, 2014) – The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) today released a copy of a bipartisan letter from key members of Congress asking the Department of Treasury to clarify regulations regarding the way pari-mutuel winnings are calculated for tax purposes. The NTRA is also calling on horse racing industry participants and customers to express their support of the effort by signing a Change.org petition available here: http://chn.ge/RXZ6DW. The letter to the Secretary of the Department of Treasury was co-authored by Rep. Charles Boustany (R-LA) and Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY) and co-signed by more than a dozen other congressmen. The request for clarification urges the inclusion of a bettor’s entire investment in a single pari-mutuel pool to determine the amount reported or withheld for tax purposes, as opposed to only the amount wagered on the correct result. This issue typically arises in the context of increasingly popular exotic wagers. For example, under the proposed clarification, the amount wagered by a Pick 6 player who hits... ...

‘Chrome, Sketchers in Endorsement Deal

By ESPN.com The owners of California Chrome signed their first major sponsorship deal for the horse ahead of his attempt to be the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years. Shoe brand Skechers will be featured on everything from the apparel of the horse’s handlers to the horse’s blanket, or fly sheet, to the barn leading up to the Belmont Stakes on June 7. The deal also requires team members to wear Skechers branding in the winner’s circle should the horse win and allows Skechers to use California Chrome in marketing materials for a month after the race. Terms were not disclosed, but a source with knowledge of the deal said it’s the largest deal in horse racing since UPS paid IAEH Stables to advertise on Triple Crown hopeful Big Brown in 2008. “We’re a marketing company that just happens to be in the footwear business,” said Robert Greenberg, the chief executive for Skechers, which headquartered in California. “We’re spending a couple bucks to the roll the dice and if... ...

‘Chrome Works for Belmont

By Bloodhorse.com Triple Crown hopeful California Chrome looked sharp in his final workout May 31 in preparation for the upcoming Belmont Stakes (gr. I), breezing a half-mile under regular rider Victor Espinoza in a quick :47.69 at Belmont Park. “It was great,” Espinoza said. “I started not too fast…and I picked it up a little bit at the end. When we crossed the wire, I kind of dropped the reins a little bit and he did what he always does: his job.” Steve Coburn and Perry Martin’s homebred son of Lucky Pulpit   is seeking to become the 12th horse in history to sweep the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and Belmont and the first Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. He impressed on-lookers with his presence over a track playing fast after being sealed overnight because of light rain in the New York area. “The horse worked great,” assistant trainer Alan Sherman said. “(The track) seems to be fast today. ‘Chrome’s Career Began at Harris Farms

By San Jose Mercury News COALINGA — Here at Harris Farms, just a whiff away from the cattle feed lots along Interstate 5, an all-female foaling crew helped deliver a precocious chestnut colt named California Chrome, smothering him with hugs and kisses. It was here that exercise rider Chendo Michel cinched the future champion’s first saddle, groomer Chuy Horta iced his tender white ankles, and co-owners Steve Coburn and Perry Martin first won his affections with a bag of Mrs. Pastures cookies.   This is the birthplace of California Chrome, who on Saturday will attempt to become the first horse in 36 years to win racing’s coveted Triple Crown — and the first ever from California.   The white rail fences and mulberry trees, foaling pens and training barns of his first two years are more than 2,000 miles away from where the 3-year-old colt won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness last month and even farther from the Belmont Stakes. It’s where his most-devoted followers will crowd around a television... ...

California Chrome Gets New Shoes

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (May 30, 2014) — In time for his planned May 31 breeze, Triple Crown hopeful California Chrome got a visit from farrier Judd Fisher and a new set of shoes at Belmont Park. Steve Coburn and Perry Martin’s winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) had the routine footwork done May 30 around 1 p.m. EDT under the watchful eye of assistant trainer Alan Sherman, who said the completed job looks “outstanding.” Fisher, who flew in specifically to shoe California Chrome before his June 7 engagement in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), adapted a glue-on shoe produced by Thoro’Bred Racing Plate Company. Instead of attaching the shoe with adhesive, he now nails them into place. “It was made to be glued on with an adhesive, but I didn’t use the adhesive, I just nailed it on,” Fisher said. “I just wanted to get him up off his sole a little bit more than he was. ‘Chrome Poster Boy for California Breeders

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (May 30, 2014) — California breeders and the state’s entire racing industry could not find a better horse to carry their brand. Or a better name. On the verge of making Triple Crown history, California Chrome has been a tremendous morale booster for a state breeding and racing program left reeling by its downward spiral for several years. “A horse like California Chrome really increases our visibility,” said Doug Burge, president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. “Even his name is an advertisement for our breeding program. I’m so glad they selected that name for him. You should have seen some of the other names on the list.” Such as SeaBisquick, which was one of the other possible names on the owners’ short list. Cute, but not quite the same ring. The charismatic chestnut carries the state’s pride as the first California-bred to win the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands and Preakness (both gr. I). Excitement over the potential of such an unlikely Triple Crown... ...
