Big Macher Wins by a Schnoz

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (April 12, 2014)—In a thrilling finish, California-bred Big Macher, with Tyler Baze aboard, prevailed by a nose over favored Wild Dude and Rafael Bejarano in Saturday’s Grade II, $200,000 Potrero Grande Stakes, covering 6 ½ furlongs in 1:14.97. Trained by Richard Baltas, who claimed the 4-year-old Beau Genius gelding out of his debut nine starts back for $20,000 on July 17, Big Macher sat a close third behind fractions of 21.85, 44.25 and 1:08.50, wheeled three-wide turning for home, dispatched Cylclometer a sixteenth out and just managed to withstand the late charge of Wild Dude. “I had a beautiful trip,” said Baze, who broke from post seven, just inside the speedy Cyclometer.  “I didn’t get too much pressure from the outside and I really just got the perfect trip.  I got to do what I wanted out there and I got to keep him happy. “I knew this horse was going to lay his body down and give me everything he had.  He’s an... ...

Tribal Spy Wins Las Cienegas

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (April 12, 2014)—California-bred Tribal Spy benefitted from a fast pace to come rolling late and win Saturday’s Grade III, $100,000 Las Cienegas Stakes by a head under Joe Talamo, covering 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in 1:12.12. With 7-5 favorite Biorhythm and 5-2 second choice Sky High Gal slugging it out through splits of 21.58, 43.02 and 1:05.86, Talamo sat a comfortable third aboard the Adam Kitchingman-trained daughter of Tribal Rule, overhauled the top two inside the furlong pole and held off a fast finishing Llandudno to just prevail. Although she was a winner of the state bred Irish O’Brien Stakes down the hill on March 15, Tribal Spy was off at 11-1 and paid $25.60, $10.20 and $5.00. “We had a perfect trip,” said Talamo.  “I was real pleased to see those two fillies on the lead goin’ head and head.  They were going pretty quick.  So we got a perfect trip.  Turning for home, I took her to... ...

Uzziel Wires Field in Santa Paula

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (April 11, 2014)—Longshot California-bred Uzziel took full advantage of her early speed and coasted to a stunning 42-1 front-end upset in Friday’s $75,000 Santa Paula Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, getting 6 ½ furlongs in 1:17.19 while providing Tyler Baze with his third win on the afternoon. Trained by Mike Puype and owned by her breeders, James and Tammy McKenney, Uzziel, a California-bred daughter of Harlington, won by a comfortable 2 ¼ lengths while besting eight rivals and providing the McKenney’s with their first-ever stakes victory. “This is our first-ever stakes win,” said James McKenney.  “We’ve been breeding horses for 10 years now and we’ve never really had much luck at Santa Anita.  You couldn’t believe how excited we are.  We’ve got a full sister to this filly who’s a yearling and we’ve got the mare (Pretti Woman, by Lord At War) in Florida to be bred back to Harlington.” Second-longest shot in the field, Uzziel set fractions of 21.78, 44.48 and 1:10.14.  She paid... ...

Los Alamitos Construction Approved

By DRF.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Apr. 11, 2014) — Los Alamitos is launching capital improvements to its grandstand and expanding stalls for Thoroughbreds in advance of its Thoroughbred meeting in July. Brad McKinzie, the general manager of the track’s Thoroughbred operation, said Thursday that Los Alamitos has received approval from the city of Cypress to begin the projects, which are expected to be completed in June. The track’s Thoroughbred meeting runs from July 3-13. A three-week Thoroughbred meeting will be held in December. The seasons are part of racing dates previously held by Hollywood Park, which closed last December. Construction of 200 stalls for Thoroughbreds will begin on property previously used as a maintenance yard for tractors and other heavy equipment. The receiving barn also will be remodeled. The new stalls will increase capacity for Thoroughbreds to 700. McKinzie said an additional 200 temporary stalls could be used closer to the July race meeting, bringing barn-area capacity for Thoroughbreds to 900 stalls. Approximately 500 Thoroughbreds who race at Santa Anita have... ...

Hovdey on Chiloquin

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Apr. 11, 2014) — Once the dust clears Saturday night on the last of the major Kentucky Derby trial heats – better known as the Arkansas Derby and the Blue Grass Stakes – the coast will be clear for a brief appreciation of an underserved category of Thoroughbred racehorse in Sunday’s $100,000 San Simeon Stakes at Santa Anita. Chiloquin and Zimmer don’t remember what it was like to be 3. Their chances at Triple Crown glory came and went quickly, without much concern. Chiloquin, a 6-year-old son of Tribal Rule, hails from the same generation as Animal Kingdom and Shackleford, while Zimmer, an 8-year-old by Empire Maker, missed his chance to get smacked around by Mine That Bird, Summer Bird, and Rachel Alexandra. After a while, both Zimmer and Chiloquin passed into the “old warrior” category, and there they have spent most of their time, surviving travel, physical setbacks, and a variety of racetracks to arrive in the same race Sunday with a chance... ...

Statement from Vessels Stallion Farm

“The Vessels Ranch property has been listed for sale with Sotheby’s International Realty in association with Equestrian Real Estate.  The property consists of 1,390 acres and includes the approximately 275 acres on which the Vessels Stallion Farm operation is sited. The Vessels Ranch property is extremely valuable due to its overall size and location within ten miles of the Pacific Ocean in the county of San Diego, California.  The upland portions of the property above the horse facilities have excellent residential development potential.  It has been determined that it is in the best interests of the family to seek to realize the value of this property now rather than continuing to hold it for investment. This news does not mean the end of Vessels Stallion Farm.  We remain open for business and presently have over 260 horses boarded at the Farm.  It would not be unusual for a property of this magnitude to take an extended period of time to sell.  Moreover, any sale transaction will have to allow several... ...

CHRB Seeks Harsh ‘Buzzer’ Penalties

From CHRB SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Apr. 10, 2014) — The California Horse Racing Board is moving to adopt strict penalties for riders using electrical devices in races or workouts. In the interim, Executive Director Rick Baedeker has issued a directive for CHRB investigators to refer any such cases directly to the racing commissioners for hearings and also to notify the local District Attorney for possible criminal prosecution. CHRB Rule 1890(c) “prohibits any person from having in his possession on the premises [including auxiliary stabling and training facilities] during any recognized meeting any electrical stimulating or shocking device commonly referred to as a battery, or any mechanical stimulating device, or any other appliance, which might affect the speed or actions of a horse.” CHRB rules do not contain penalty guidelines for the stewards and other judges to follow when adjudicating cases except for violations involving medications, which are based on national model rules and detailed in CHRB Rule 1843.3. Establishing a penalty guideline within the rule for use of an electrical device will... ...

Hovdey on Del Mar

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Apr. 10, 2014) — Del Mar president Joe Harper gazed westward at the expanse of his freshly laid turf course. In the distance, the familiar landmarks of Dog Beach, the Brigantine, and the AmTrak trestle were comforting sights, but beneath his feet was spread the new Bermuda grass, transferred only the week before from its growing fields in the desert. Harper looked down. “Grow,” he said. It will, although how fast depends upon how warm it gets in coastal San Diego County over the next three months and how the new turf responds to the various tricks of the growing trade employed by turf course superintendent Leif Dickinson. Dickinson knows he can’t fool Mother Nature, but he can negotiate a working arrangement. To that end he is using plastic turf “blankets” to cover areas of the course and retain warmth, along with environmentally friendly supplements to enhance growth rate. “It’s everything,” Dickinson said. “It’s water, it’s fertility, it’s nutrition, it’s adding the biology... ...

Racing Exempt in Wagering Bill

By Bloodhorse.com WASHINGTON, D.C. (Apr. 11, 2014) — Legislation has been introduced in Congress to amend the 1961 Federal Wire Act to ban all forms of interstate wagering except horse racing. The bill, named the Restoration of America’s Wire Act  (H.R. 4301), was introduced by Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) (S. 2159). The legislation would amend the Federal Wire Act, the 1961 federal law that prohibits interstate wagering, to prohibit interstate Internet gaming. The bill is a response to the Department of Justice’s change in its previous interpretation of what the Wire Act prohibits, according to a memorandum from the American Horse Council. Since 1961, the DOJ had maintained that the Wire Act banned the interstate transmission of all bets or wagers or information assisting in the placing of bets or wagers. In December 2011, the department issued a ruling that the Wire Act applied only to sports betting, not all wagering, the AHC said. “That ruling effectively broadened what gambling could be offered to include... ...

SportsNetwork.com on California Chrome

From SportsNetwork.com PHILADELPHIA, PA (Apr. 10, 2014) – Regardless of what happens in Saturday’s Arkansas Derby and Blue Grass Stakes, California Chrome will be the Kentucky Derby favorite after his scintillating performance in the Santa Anita Derby.California Chrome won for the fourth consecutive time with a 5 1/4-length score over Hoppertunity last Saturday at Santa Anita. It is surprising that the margin of victory was the smallest of the four, but it could have been a lot more if jockey Victor Espinoza pressured the son of Lucky Pulpit to run faster inside the final furlong. Still, the colt ran that eighth of a mile in 12 2/5 seconds, which is the fastest of all the Kentucky Derby contenders to date. The chestnut colt is by far and away the class of the 2014 3-year-old crop, so much so that the rest of the Kentucky Derby field (outside Bayern if he qualifies) will be running for second place. History is also behind the homebred. His trainer, Art Sherman, was the exercise... ...

Hovdey on Sherman and Gilchrist

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com Greg Gilchrist won’t be taking any credit for any part of the California Chrome fairy tale. The colt, now perched at the threshold of Kentucky Derby favoritism, has cleanly divorced himself from all traditional moorings to be what anthropologists might call sui generis, which is racetrack Latin for “what a freak.” And yet if Gilchrist, acting on behalf of Scott Sherwood’s Blinkers On Racing Stable partnership, had not gone to $30,000 to buy a filly by Not for Love at the second session of the Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training in May of 2008  . . . She would not have ended up in Northern California. She would not have won an $8,000 maiden claiming race for Blinkers On. She would not have been sold to Perry Martin and Steve Coburn, who met through Blinkers On. She would not have been bred to the $2,500 California stallion Lucky Pulpit. And she never would have dropped that white-trimmed chestnut who ended up in the care of... ...

Horse Sense Blog on California Chrome

From Horse Sense Blog Saturday’s performance by California Chrome in the Santa Anita Derby took our breath away, just as his San Felipe did a month ago. This time, he didn’t get the quick, almost quarter horse-like start that he got in March. Coming awkwardly away from the gate, he settled off the pace and loomed up on the outside as they rounded the far turn. Espinoza said, “Go”…and boy, did he go.  Powering away to an open-lengths lead, he shortened his strides near the end, ears pricked and eyes bright, as if to say, “Are you guys gonna catch me any time soon?” Every Derby Trail needs an electrifying contender in its ranks; this colt may be one of the most popular in recent years. Trainer Art Sherman said to the press after his win, “He’s my Swaps.” That means a lot, considering the 77 year-old horseman was up close and personal with the 1955 Kentucky Derby winner, as his exercise rider. And yes, California Chrome lovers have drawn... ...

It doesn’t matter,” said Baltas. “I like where we drew (post position seven of eight). There is one speed horse outside us (Cyclometer), but we should come out of there and Tyler (Baze) will have a good look at the field, but if they give us the lead, we’ll take it.” Cyclometer is by Cyclotron, out of the Eastern Echo mare Moana Loa, was bred by... ...

Ed Delaney

Ed Delaney is breeder of California Cup Oaks winner Susans Express. Q: When and how did you first get involved in the Thoroughbred breeding industry? How does your professional background influence your Thoroughbred breeding plan? A: I got hooked on race horses when I was an 8-year old kid. Every August my mother and I would board a bus and take the two-hour trip to Saratoga Race Track.  For me it was love at first sight—an experience I will never forget. Then in my mid-twenties I started buying some harness horses.   I didn’t get involved with thoroughbred breeding until nine or 10 years ago. A friend of mine who had already been breeding for a few  years kept urging me to get aboard. I finally jumped in, bought some broodmares, some breeding books, started reading the industry magazines a little closer, talked to as many people in the industry as I could and started the never-ending road of experimenting.   I’ve always been in business for myself so at first breeding... ...

Cookies for California Chrome

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Apr. 6, 2014) — A day after his latest spectacular victory, California Chrome bounced around in his stall April 6, holding court with media and munching cookies. “He ate a whole bag,” said co-owner Carolyn Coburn as her colt motioned for more oat treats. California Chrome playfully nipped Steve Coburn, Carolyn’s husband. “I’m taking an extra day off,” said Coburn, who works as a press operator in a small Northern Nevada factory. “I called my boss. He said everybody from the shop watched the race and they’d been celebrating, too.” California Chrome is taking his neophyte owners/breeders on an adventure of a lifetime. He’s the first horse bred by co-owners Steve and Carolyn Coburn of Topaz Lake, NV., and Perry and Denise Martin of Yuba City, CA. The couples met through shared ownership in Love The Chase; they each owned 5% as part of a Blinkers On syndicate. California Chrome Fine the Day After

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Apr. 6, 2014) — Racing has itself a Rock Star. He’s California Chrome, who on Saturday started on the path of legends, winning the Santa Anita Derby in breathtaking fashion, overpowering seven rivals, including well-regarded stakes winners Hoppertunity and Candy Boy. He was all but eased up at the end of a mile and an eighth, floating home by 5 1/4 lengths under a nonchalant Victor Espinoza. Call it Superman compared to Clark Kent. It was bedlam in the winner’s circle, replete with TV cameras, photographers, social media groupies, traditional media, autograph seekers and assorted hangers-on, but both horse and trainer survived the well-intentioned ordeal. The national, yea, international, spotlight grows ever larger now as trainer Art Sherman prepares California Chrome for racing’s biggest stage, the 140th Kentucky Derby on May 3. Although off a bit slowly and crowded early, California Chrome battled longshot Dublin Up and second choice Candy Boy for the lead until the quarter pole, then took off like a Jet,... ...

California Chrome Romps in SA Derby

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (April 5, 2014) — It has been 59 years since Art Sherman first went to the Kentucky Derby as an 18-year-old exercise rider for 1955 Derby winner Swaps. After that, he was a jockey, then a trainer, but never has he returned to the Derby. But now he has a good reason to go back, and no one is riding higher. The Sherman-trained California Chrome, already considered the ante-post favorite for the May 3 Derby, emphatically solidified that position Saturday with a powerhouse performance in the Grade 1, $1 million Santa Anita Derby, which he won by 5 1/4 lengths after a bit of early difficulty. So impressive was the win, his fourth straight, that Sherman, 77, joked, “Maybe I should take my jock’s license out.” Victor Espinoza had the mount Saturday, but the way California Chrome ($3.40) ran, Shaquille O’Neal could have ridden him. Facing two other highly regarded stakes-winning 3-year-olds, Hoppertunity and Candy Boy, California Chrome blew them off the racetrack. “It’s kind of... ...

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Apr. 5, 2014) – With three furlongs remaining in Saturday’s $200,250 Evening Jewel Stakes at Santa Anita, jockey Victor Espinoza decided to challenge the competition aboard Rovenna. Rovenna was disputing the pace when Espinoza urged the filly clear. She responded to take a two-length lead and held it to the finish of the race over 6 1/2 furlongs for California-bred 3-year-old fillies. “I wanted to do that,” he said. “I wanted to beat everybody and take an advantage. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t.” Rovenna ($5) was timed in 1:15.55. She finished 2 3/4 lengths in front of Harlington’s Rose, who closed from fifth in the field of nine. Cause Ur My Babe, an 8-1 shot, finished third, followed by Sprouts, Princess Genevieve, Gouyen, Chati’s On Top, Sprague River, and Norastone. Rovenna set an early pace of 21.81 and 44.48 seconds. She has shown speed in the past, a tactic that Espinoza wanted to use on a track that played friendly to front-runners Saturday. “That’s... ...

Tax Depreciation Bill Advances

From NTRA WASHINGTON, D.C. (Thursday, April 3, 2014) – The United States Senate Finance Committee approved today legislation that would extend expired or expiring tax provisions for race horses, including a provision to extend the three-year recovery period. This provision – originally passed by Congress and enacted into law in 2008 – accelerates, simplifies and makes uniform the depreciation period for race horses.  The provision expired at the end of 2013 along with several other tax provisions. The proposed version of the provision that moved out of committee today more accurately reflects current-day investments in race horses and helps to spur continued investments in the racing industry. “I applaud the Committee for moving this bill and for including this important provision in the legislation,” said Alex Waldrop, NTRA President and CEO. “I especially appreciate that the Committee understands the continued importance of our industry and the contribution of the equine economy to job creation and added investment.” The three-year recovery provision was a top priority for the National Thoroughbred Racing... ...

Hovdey on Bertrando

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Apr. 3, 2014) — With major stakes winners Candy Boy, Hoppertunity, and California Chrome in the mix, there is a good chance that the results of the $1 million Santa Anita Derby will resonate well past the end of its nine furlongs late Saturday afternoon. You like to see a race have legs, especially a historically rich race like the Derby, despite its role as a feeder event for that other Derby at Churchill Downs. Of course, there’s no getting around it. But nothing says the top finishers of the Santa Anita Derby can’t have lives of their own after the first Saturday in May. [Santa Anita Derby Day: Get PPs, watch Saturday’s card live] Neither A.P. Indy nor Bertrando, 1-2 in the 1992 Santa Anita Derby, had anything to do with the Kentucky Derby that year. Hovdey on Art Sherman

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Apr. 2, 2014) — If California Chrome performs the way Art Sherman thinks he can Saturday in the $1 million Santa Anita Derby, look out. Here comes Art Sherman. If he wins Saturday, California Chrome would be heading to the May 3 Kentucky Derby as one of the favorites. This would not be unusual. Any Santa Anita Derby winner, barring the rankest of longshots, heads to Louisville as a horse to watch – even if his trainer is a 77-year-old Derby rookie. “I know the horse is doing terrific, and I’m kind of anxious to see if he can pass this test,” Sherman said. “If he can beat this field, I think he’s got a legitimate shot at the Derby.” It was the Tuesday before the race, and Sherman was sitting in the kitchen of his home in the north San Diego County enclave of Rancho Bernardo. Sherman and his wife, Faye – they were married in 1962 – bought the place a year... ...

O’Neill Knows How Sherman Feels

By Brisnet.com It’s been nearly 60 years since Art Sherman had a  horseman’s interest in the Kentucky Derby. He was 18 in 1955 when he accompanied  the great Swaps and his trainer Mesh Tenney to Churchill Downs to prepare the  colt for his victory in the Run for the Roses 59 years ago. If the fates allow, Sherman, now 77, will make it back to  Louisville, Kentucky, for the 140th classic, this year with California Chrome, like Swaps a  California-bred chestnut. Sherman is advised to enjoy the ride, from no less an  authority than Doug O’Neill, who fulfilled every trainer’s dream two years ago  by winning the Derby with 15-1 longshot I’ll Have Another. After winning the  Preakness, the upstart three-year-old came within hailing distance of going for the  Triple Crown but was sidelined with an 11th-hour injury a day before the Belmont  Stakes. But first things first, and for streaking California  Chrome, that would be Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Santa Anita Derby, a race  O’Neill won the last... ...

Lucky Pulpit is a 13-year-old son of Pulpit, who stands at Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif., for the modest fee of $2,500. But great ones can come from anywhere, and California Chrome’s dominating win in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes has raised awareness in Lucky Pulpit, who was California’s leading freshman sire in 2010. On the racetrack, Lucky Pulpit won three of 22 starts, but the résumé includes a turf win at five furlongs in the Arlington Park Smile Stakes at age 4 and graded placings at 2 and 3. Lucky Pulpit was bred and raced by Larry and Marianne Williams, who still own him, along with his biggest winner. That would be Rousing Sermon, a multiple stakes winner of $710,092 out of Lucky Pulpit’s second crop. New Immigration Bill Introduced

From NTRA WASHINGTON, D.C. Of that number, 33,000 are made available for the first half of the fiscal year and 33,000 for the second half. The first half cap already has been reached. The legislation also clarifies the methodology used to determine the prevailing wage rate that H-2B employers must pay and ensures that workers receive compensation that is both fair and reflective of current market conditions. Dr. William Gray and Jill Gray are longtime members of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. Q: When and how did you first get involved in the Thoroughbred breeding industry? How does your professional background influence your Thoroughbred breeding plan?   A: My first experience with breeding began in 1969 with my father, Wesley Gray in New Mexico.  We hauled an old mare in a one-horse trailer pulled behind our car to a small farm south of Albuquerque.  We unloaded the mare, she was in heat (apparently), bred the mare, paid the $100 stud fee, loaded her back up and took her back to the pasture.  She had a colt 11 months later.  It was easy money!   Now, 45 years later, I am a practicing veterinarian, running a multi-doctor practice and a small breeding/racing operation.  Now I have to deal with problem mares, sick foals, lame and colicky horses.  Many days I wish I could go back to that one-horse trailer, $100 dollar stud fees, and my dad paying for the... ...

Tribal Rule Progeny Top $1 million in 2014

From Ballena Vista Farm ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 16, 2014) — A Tribal Rule one-two finish in Santa Anita’s Irish O’Brien Stakes and Joy Boy’s two-turn allowance win at Oaklawn Park propelled Tribal Rule’s 2014 progeny earnings to $1,035,189 by the end of the day and a $276,418 lead on California’s General Sire list. Tribal Spy became Tribal Rule’s 36 stakes winner when she broke smartly and led gate-to-wire in the $100,000 Irish O’Brien Stakes covering the hillside course of about 6 ½ furlongs in 1:12.59 while defeating Tribal Rule’s Grade 2 winner Ciao Bella Luna who closed bravely from last after “missing” the break. With her first stakes victory and fifth career win, Tribal Spy increased her earnings to $238,610. Trained by Adam Kitchingman for Triple B Farms owner Paul Boghossian, Tribal Spy was bred by Gary Barber and is the first foal from the Victory Gallop allowance winner Victory Spy. Tribal Rule’s 5-year-old Joy Boy handled the wet fast surface in Arkansas with ease, controlling the pace throughout the 1... ...

California Chrome’s Next Start Uncertain

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 16, 2014) — Recent San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) winner California Chrome could be entered for the $1 million Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) next month, but firm plans for the colt’s next race were still undetermined as of the morning of March 16. The Santa Anita Derby, run at 1 1/8 miles, is set for April 5 at Santa Anita Park. “We’re playing it by ear with him,” trainer Art Sherman said. California Chrome, who most recently captured the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) by 7 1/4 lengths March 8, is on a three-race winning streak, all in stakes. “The horse is doing well,” Sherman added. “He galloped this morning (at his headquarters at Los Alamitos Race Course). Let’s say he’s on the Derby trail and there’s a chance he could run in the Santa Anita Derby.” The California-bred son of Lucky Pulpit  , who has won his three most recent starts by a combined margin of 19 lengths, earned 50 qualifying points to the Kentucky... ...

Tribal Spy Wins Irish O’Brien

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 15, 2014) – Tribal Spy really did have the luck of the Irish on her side in the $100,500 Irish O’Brien Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita. She was one of two horses in the race seemingly with early speed, but when Ciao Bella Luna got off absolutely last in the field of seven, Tribal Spy found herself with an uncontested lead, and she nursed it all the way to the wire to win the downhill turf sprint for California-bred females. Tribal Spy ($10.40) got away with soft fractions – for the downhill course — of 22.36 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.75 for a half-mile while covering the about 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:12.59 to give jockey Irving Orozco his first stakes win. Tribal Spy held on to win by one length over an unlucky Ciao Bella Luna, who bravely got back into contention and fought on along the rail through the lane. Ciao Bella Luna finished second by a head over Dancingtothestars, with... ...

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 15, 2014) — Seeking her first graded stakes win, Let Faith Arise put away pace rivals Fiftyshadesofhay and Iotapa in the stretch to win the $350,000 Santa Margarita Stakes (gr. I) March 15 at Santa Anita Park (VIDEO). Let Faith Arise, runner-up in both the La Canada (gr. II) and Santa Maria (gr. Let Faith Arise, a Kentucky-bred 4-year-old daughter of Kafwain  , is a homebred for Tommy Town Thoroughbreds trained by Jerry Hollendorfer. It was the first Santa Margarita win for the Hall of Fame conditioner. Media Turn Out for California Chrome

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 14, 2014) — Plans for California Chrome’s next race are still on hold but that hasn’t diminished interest in the California-bred colt one whit. When it comes to gaining mainstream recognition, he may not be in Silky Sullivan’s league yet, but he’s getting there. The son of Lucky Pulpit, smashing winner of his last three starts, including the Grade II San Felipe Stakes last Saturday, is on the fast track to the May 3 Kentucky Derby after earning 50 qualifying points by winning the San Felipe. “We just had Channel 8 from San Diego and ESPN here and I’ve done nine radio interviews,” trainer Art Sherman said Thursday morning by phone from his headquarters at Los Alamitos. “I don’t know why he’s so popular, but there’s a ton of interest in him.” As to whether he would run in the Grade I, $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 5, Sherman said, “It’s too early to know right now. He came out of... ...

Marks Mine Captures Camilla Urso

By SFGate.com ALBANY, Calif. (Mar. 15, 2014) — It’s always advantageous for a horse to possess natural speed, but sometimes you need some grit, too, which is how Marks Mine won the $59,400 Camilla Urso Stakes on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields. Marks Mine, the even-money favorite, broke from the No. 5 post position under Frank Alvarado in the 6-furlong race for fillies and mares. Fellow front-runner Fast and Fury, ridden by Leslie Mawing, broke from the outside slot in the field of eight. “I told Frank to back off if the eight goes, and he tried to do that, but the eight backed off, too, so he was stuck on the inside,” winning trainer Steve Specht said. “I was a little concerned that it would soften her up for someone else from behind, but she digs in and gives you what she’s got.” Marks Mine disposed of Fast and Fury at the top of the stretch and spurted to a two-length lead, but just as Specht feared, Happybirthdaybaby and jockey Russell Baze... ...

Hovdey on Stulls

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 13, 2014) — This is a big week for Tom and Debi Stull of Tommy Town Thoroughbreds. Their investment is considerable. Their name is on the product, with a lot of talented people in the mix. And yet there is no guarantee of a happy ending. On the contrary, such endeavors fail miserably far more often than they succeed. They are also running a horse in a Grade 1 race. Let Faith Arise, second in the La Canada and Santa Maria this year, will carry the Tommy Town colors Saturday at Santa Anita in the $350,000 Santa Margarita Invitational, traditionally the high point of the meet for older fillies and mares. Her opposition includes La Canada winner Spellbound and Santa Maria winner Iotapa, as well as Black-Eyed Susan winner Fiftyshadesofhay and the Argentine Group 1 winner Miss Serendipity. (Those familiar with the history of the Santa Margarita might rue the lack of true marquee names, but the recent California landscape in the division... ...

Ciao Bella Luna Runs by the Rules

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 13, 2014) — Ciao Bella Luna is the rare Kentucky-bred eligible to race in stakes for California-breds. The 4-year-old filly is by the California-based stallion Tribal Rule. A few years ago, conditions for California-breds were broadened to include California-bred and California-sired horses. The new restriction allowed Ciao Bella Luna to start in the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint here Jan. 25, a race she won. On Saturday, Ciao Bella Luna is back with California-breds in the $100,000 Irish O’Brien Stakes for fillies and mares on the hillside turf course. Ciao Bella Luna is the only filly or mare in the field of seven not bred in the state. In the Sunshine Millions race, Ciao Bella Luna was always near the front and won by a half-length over Marks Mine. Trainer Peter Miller said Ciao Bella Luna is capable of repeating that performance. [Santa Margarita: Get PPs, watch Saturday’s card live] “She’s got a very good chance,” Miller said. “She’s doing well. She runs... ...

Jerardi on California Chrome

By Dick Jerardi, DRF.com Sometimes, you know in November. Many years, it is April, or even Kentucky Derby Week. You see a horse and say, “That is the one.” Given that I am in the middle of chasing basketballs around the country, I will admit that I had not seen a single one of California Chrome’s races until I fired up my laptop to watch the San Felipe Stakes last Saturday. It was disappointing to see that Bayern had to be scratched after those two dazzling wins, but I was looking forward to seeing Midnight Hawk, who I thought had run a very impressive third behind Candy Boy in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes. I thought he would improve off that race. Well, Midnight Hawk did improve and still got crushed. [ROAD TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY: Prep races, point standings, replays] California Chrome absolutely flew out of the gate to clear the field instantly. But jockey Victor Espinoza obviously knew what he had under him, so he just let the... ...

(Mar. 10, 2014) — Golden Gate Fields announced that the Campanile, a one-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies bred in California, has been moved from May 31 to June 8, the same day as the $100,000 Silky Sullivan Stakes, a one-mile turf race for 3-year-olds bred in California. Both races are Golden State Series Stakes. “By moving the Campanile to June 8, we create a day where California-breds are showcased in two stakes,” said Jerkens. “We are also going to try to card a couple of allowance races for California-breds that day. As California Chrome proved with his dominating victory in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita (Saturday), California-breds deserve to be spotlighted.” Golden Gate also announced that the Alcatraz Stakes has been added to the winter-spring meeting stakes schedule. The Alcatraz is for 3-year-olds and will be run at one mile on the turf May 11. Nominations for the race will close May 1. The addition of the Alcatraz means Golden Gate Fields will present a... ...

Pressure Off California Chrome’s Trainer

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 9, 2014) — Following a dazzling win from California Chrome in the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) March 8 at Santa Anita Park, trainer Art Sherman says he can concentrate on the best way to get to this year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). “I’m not making any plans (for his next race), you know what I mean?” said the 77-year-old Sherman, whose long years of toil are being rewarded by the unlikely California-bred colt. “I’m in the Derby now; I’ve got enough points. That took a lot of pressure off me. I’m just going to play it by ear. There is a chance we might go to the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I).” Speaking by phone to the Santa Anita publicity department March 9, Sherman added, “The horse has to let me know. He came out of the race good, he ate up last night. I was happy. He’s a cool horse. I just don’t want to do too much with... ...

California Chrome Romps in San Felipe

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (March 6, 2014)—In a breathtaking performance, California Chrome, under Victor Espinoza, won Saturday’s Grade II, $300,000 San Felipe Stakes in gate to wire fashion by 7 ¼  lengths, covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.59, the second fastest final time in the 77-year history of the race,  potentially stamping himself as the horse to beat in the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 5. Breaking like a shot from the number two post position as the 7-5 favorite in a field of six 3-year-olds, the Art Sherman-conditioned California Chrome was quickly in-hand around the Club House turn with second choice Midnight Hawk to his outside and was full himself through splits of 23.09, 45.55, 1:09.45 and 1:35.94. “He ran like I expected him to,” said Espinoza.  “I wanted to try something new today, so I let him go right out of the gate.  I don’t know if people expected me to go right to the lead, but I wanted to let him enjoy his... ...

DRF.com on California Chrome

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. – California Chrome is training at a place known for horses that run a quarter-mile, but on Saturday at Santa Anita he ran like a horse who wants every part of 1 1/4 miles. California Chrome crushed his rivals in the Grade 2, $300,000 San Felipe Stakes, a major prep for 3-year-olds for both the Santa Anita Derby and the Kentucky Derby. Under the system used by Churchill Downs to determine the field for the May 3 Derby, California Chrome earned 50 points, which should be enough to make the maximum field of 20. If that happens, he will be the first horse to run in the 1 1/4-mile Derby who trains at Los Alamitos, which became California Chrome’s home after he was displaced by the closure of Hollywood Park. Los Alamitos is primarily a track for Quarter Horse racing, but has taken on an important role for Thoroughbreds on this circuit. Art Sherman, who trains California Chrome, joked that California Chrome’s alert start on Saturday... ...

Hovdey on California Chrome

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Mar. 5, 2014) — One of the prime items on the dinner menu of the Vessels Club at Los Alamitos Race Course is Art Sherman’s Petite Filet, Lobster and Shrimp, with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and veggies, all for $38. Better get it while it’s hot. The timing of the entrée’s appearance on the Los Alamitos bill-of-fare is suspicious, roughly coinciding with the emergence of California Chrome as a serious 3-year-old colt who just happens to be trained by Art Sherman at – where else? – Los Alamitos. California Chrome is the impressive winner of two straight races for products of the California breeding industry. That’s usually not enough to get your trainer enshrined on a menu. But in these early days of the Los Alamitos transformation into a key component of the Southern California Thoroughbred community, management is giddy over the idea that a bona fide Kentucky Derby horse might be training at the track better known as the Quarter Horse capital of... ...
