Florida Tracks Survive Hurricane

By Bloodhorse.com HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 11, 2017) — It didn’t match the wind speeds generated by Hurricane Irma, but Florida horsemen released a collective sigh of relief Sept. 11, as initial reports suggested the industry had dodged a bullet. While some communications were hampered by phone and power outages, representatives of horsemen’s groups, tracks, and training centers from South Florida to Ocala Monday morning said there were no initial reports of human or equine injuries because of the storm. Barns, track surfaces, and frontside facilities all held up well at tracks and training centers. Some barns at Gulfstream Park saw shingle damage, but the facility and track surfaces were in good enough shape that the track plans to resume training Sept. 12, simulcasting Sept. 13, and racing Sept. 16. Roof damage to barns was reported at Tampa Bay Downs, which currently is not racing; and the Palm Meadows training center had tree damage. Barns at Gulfstream Park West also held up well, sustaining minor gutter damage. There were also... ...

Jay Hovdey on Skye Diamonds

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com Most of us, finding ourselves awake at 3 a.m., wallow in Fitzgerald’s brooding idea that “in a real dark night of the soul it is always three o’clock in the morning, day after day.” Then we turn over and struggle back to sleep. Except for Bill Spawr. For Spawr, a trainer for more than 40 of his 77 years, by 3 a.m. he is well into a bright new working day, already prowling his stable, peering into the stalls of sleepy headed Thoroughbreds, deciding who gets to do what and when. Until this month. As of Monday, Spawr was halfway through a 30-day suspension levied by the California Horse Racing Board for a 56-picogram overage of the legal therapeutic medication clenbuterol found in the post-race urine sample of the 4-year-old filly Skye Diamonds after her second place finish to the classy Vale Dori in the Adoration Stakes at Santa Anita last May 7. Gulfstream Park Partially Evacuated

By Thoroughbred Daily News HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 8, 2017) — With Hurricane Irma bearing down on the Florida coast, Gulfstream officials have ordered the evacuation of the barns they felt were most vulnerable to damage from the storm. According to Bill Badgett Jr., a member of the upper management team at the track, about 750 horses have already left the track. Trainers were given the option of either sending them to Ocala or to Palm Meadows. The barns that were evacuated were the ones closest to the backstretch entrance on Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Not only are they the oldest barns on the Gulfstream backstretch but they are in a lower-lying area than other barns are more prone to flooding. “The good thing was there was so much notice in advance, we are able to jump on this thing before it got too bad,” Badgett said. “We started preparations a couple of days ago and we’ve gotten the horses out. On top of everything else, we’ve been dealing with a... ...

Sam Houston Shelters Displaced Horses

By Bloodhorse.com HOUSTON, Tex. (Aug. 29, 2017) — So far the Texas Thoroughbred industry appears to have escaped the worst of Hurricane Harvey, which battered the Gulf Coast with damaging winds when it made landfall Aug. 25 and has since saturated the Houston area with a record 49 inches of contiguous rain. Sam Houston Race Park, which is located northwest of downtown Houston and adjacent to the Sam Houston Tollway, has not sustained any major damage or flooding, according to Roland Tamez, who is with the track’s security team. The track did not have any racehorses on the grounds when the storm hit because its live racing season ended in May. The barn area is now being used to provide free shelter for horses being evacuated out of flooded areas. Several horses had been sent to the track ahead of the storm because their owners had experienced flooding in the past. “We’ve got over 100 horses in three barns right now,” said Tamez, who added that anyone who needs shelter... ...

Barretts Yearling Sale on Tuesday

DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 25, 2017) – The Barretts select yearling sale, set for Tuesday afternoon, is being conducted during the Del Mar summer race meeting for the third time. The sale was held on a Saturday evening in 2015, and moved to Tuesday last year, giving the event its own position during race week. The 2016 sale showed modest increases in gross and average prices compared to 2015, but a decline in median price. The sale will never be a marathon event – stall restrictions limit the event to about 80 head – but there is hope among sale executives that the quality of yearlings has improved. “Last year, we were a step up not only because of the change in the day but the local breeders have supplied us with exciting prospects,” Barretts general manager Kim Lloyd said. Lloyd said the yearlings in Tuesday’s sale were selected in the spring. “We’ll see how they developed over the summer,” Lloyd said. “We’ve heard good reports. It’s a big difference,... ...

DRF.com on Northern California Sale

By DRF.com PLEASANTON, Calif. (Aug. 11, 2017) — After declines in key categories in 2016, the Northern California sale of yearlings and horses of racing age on Tuesday at Pleasanton has a smaller look. In 2016, there were 240 horses in the catalog. This year, there were 151 as of Wednesday. “We’re hoping this will better meet the demand,” said Doug Burge, the president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. “Last year, we had too many horses for that market.” The smaller book was planned after last year’s sale saw a 32 percent decline in gross from 2015, to $1,028,200, and a 35 percent decline in the average price, to $7,560. The median price was $4,000, down from $7,500 in 2015. The leading horse of the 2016 sale was a City Zip colt who sold for $50,000. A few of the horses offered last year have shown talent this year. Take the One O One, bought for $47,000 at Pleasanton last summer, won a maiden race at Del Mar last... ...
