He tilled the fields of his native country behind powerful workhorses, admiring them and learning the skill of farming. “There were tractors in those days, but about half the work was still done with horses,” he explained. Daehling then immigrated to the United States in 1960, and after brief y pursuing life as an auto mechanic, he returned to agriculture. “I wanted to eventually fulfill my dream of raising horses,” Daehling said. “In 1973 my wife, June, and I bought a 400-acre ranch.” That property became Daehling Ranch in Elk Grove, Calif. While Daehling enjoyed making a business out of accepting boarders, he had yet to get his foot in the door of the racing industry. “I answered an ad for somebody who wanted to board a string of Thoroughbreds,” he said. “They brought out a whole bunch to live... ...

‘Chrome a Big Get for Pennsylvania Derby

By Dick Jerardi, DRF.com The Pennsylvania Derby was run on Labor Day from 1990 to 2009, a nice race for 3-year-olds that had very little national juice. It was too close to the Travers and too far from the Breeders’ Cup to attract the best horses in the division. Prior to that 20-year stint on Labor Day, the Pennsylvania Derby had first been run on Memorial Day from 1979-84 and then in mid-September, late September, or early October from 1985-89. Once slot-machine money started to kick in when the machines went live in late 2006, an opportunity arose for Parx and its signature race to become national players. Management had the money to attract the big boys, but it was never going to happen on Labor Day, even with the purse raised to $1 million. The decision was made in 2010 to move the Pennsylvania Derby to later in September, a month after the Travers and six weeks before the Breeders’ Cup. A bonus system was instituted in 2011 to... ...

Santa Anita’s Track Replaced

From DMTC ARCADIA, Calif. A locally based soil, known as El Segundo sand, was used for the new surface. During the installation, the material previously used for racing was removed to the base, allowing the course to be surveyed for sloping and grading. California Chrome Works at Los Al

From Bloodhorse.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Aug. 8, 2014) — Dual classic winner California Chrome turned in his first workout since the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), breezing three furlongs handily the morning of Aug. 8 at Los Alamitos Racecourse. Trainer Art Sherman and co-owner Steve Coburn were both pleased after observing the drill, which was timed in :37 3/5. California Chrome had a new exercise companion as Anna Wells, celebrating her 22nd birthday, filled in for regular rider Willie Delgado. Wells had a firm hold on California Chrome as they started out on the backstretch. The striking 3-year-old chestnut picked up the pace a little in the final furlong while running with his ears pricked as Wells sat steadily. “We’ve had almost two weeks of jogging and galloping,” Sherman said, since California Chrome returned July 17 from a five-week freshening including time at Harris Farms, the colt’s birthplace, following the Triple Crown campaign. “I don’t think as far as air goes…he has a hell of a foundation on him, you know what... ...

Hovdey on Del Mar Heroism

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 7, 2014) — Aleksei Avila, named for a gold medal Olympian from Belarus, sat on the steps of a neighbor’s RV in his shorts, a T-shirt, and his stockinged feet. A silver sticker in the shape of a paramedic’s badge was displayed prominently on his shirt. Two hours earlier, he had been pulled through the side window of his family’s burning trailer home by a Del Mar employee, and now Aleksei was taking a rueful inventory of his losses. “I had 30 games on my DS,” Aleksei said. “And those were my lucky shoes. I won with those in the hippity-hop race here six times. The last time I won was by, like, ten yards.” Aleksei is seven, and now he’ll be eight, thanks to the fact that for no apparent reason Del Mar labor foreman David Martinez decided to take the long way around from the grandstand side of the track at a quarter to six Wednesday morning to check on... ...

No Calif. Online Poker in 2014

By Dave Palermo, GamblingCompliance SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Aug. 7, 2014) — Legislation to legalize Internet poker in California, potentially the most lucrative U.S. online gambling market, will not make it out of the state legislature in 2014, Capitol Hill officials, American Indian tribes and racing industry lobbyists said Wednesday. A bill sponsored by Senator Lou Correa will not be the subject of a hearing by the Senate Government Organization Commission (GOC) before an August 29 deadline for consideration by the full legislature, according to GOC director Arthur Terzakis. “There will be no Internet poker hearings in August, no,” Terzakis said. Similar legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Reginald Jones-Sawyer remains stagnant, a victim of legislative inertia and strained relations between Jones-Sawyer and the tribes who drafted his bill. An informational hearing on Internet legislation has not been scheduled for the Assembly GOC, a committee spokeswoman said Wednesday. Jones-Sawyer’s staff did not respond to requests for comment. Policy issues involving “bad actor” provisions and the state’s thoroughbred racing industry, coupled with regulatory and legal issues,... ...

Hovdey on Sonoma County Fair

By Jay Hovdey, DRF.com SANTA ROSA, Calif. (Aug. 9, 2014) — Believe it or not, there has been another racetrack operating in California for the past couple of weeks equipped with a fully operational turf course and the participation of Hall of Fame personalities. And a Ferris wheel. That would be the Sonoma County Fair at Santa Rosa, gateway to California’s wine country, where the 13-day meet concludes Sunday with the running of the $50,000 Cavonnier Juvenile Stakes at six furlongs. Richard Lewis, Santa Rosa’s director of racing, reports that attendance and handle are down from last year, but average field size is up, which for some reason is the only language racetrack managers are inclined to speak anymore unless otherwise prompted. Lewis sighed and tended to agree. “When the day’s over, if we put on a good program, we’ve done our job,” Lewis said. “We can’t go out there and make people bet.” Santa Rosa exists at the rim of California’s most booming region. The fair and its racing... ...

Treasury Considering Gambling Tax Rule

By DRF.com WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 6, 2014) — The U.S. Treasury Department has told Congress that it will review a proposed reinterpretation of a tax rule that would be favorable to horseplayers, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, which conducts federal lobbying efforts on behalf of the racing industry, said Wednesday. The NTRA said the Treasury Department acknowledged in a response to congressional representatives that it “will take the recommendations under consideration.” The representatives, including the highest-ranking members of the House Ways and Means Committee, signed on to a letter that asked Treasury to consider allowing horseplayers to use the total cost of a bet, rather than the denomination of the wager, in the calculation to determine tax liability for large winning payoffs, a reinterpretation that could save horseplayers millions of dollars annually in taxes. According to racing officials, the Treasury Department had the option of refusing to consider the recommendation. Although the department is not guaranteed to issue an opinion favorable to the racing industry, one official characterized the Treasury... ...
