Barretts Yearling Catalog Online

From Barretts DEL MAR, Calif. (July 1, 2015) — The catalog for the inaugural Barretts Select Yearling Sale is now on-line and will be mailed soon.  This auction of 68 yearlings will be held on Saturday night, August 15 starting approximately 30 minutes after the last race in the Surfside Race Place located on the grounds of the Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California.  We believe this will be the best group of yearlings in terms of quality and depth to be offered in the Western United States in the last 30 years and that this auction will soon become a yearly marquee event of the summer Del Mar race meet.  Because of the depth of the quality for this sale, we have instituted for the first time an “Also Eligible List” which begins with Hip Number 70 in the catalog and will allow horses to “scratch into the sale” if a yearling numerically below them (in terms of Hip Number) is withdrawn. The yearlings will be stabled inside the Del Mar Horse Show Arena adjacent... ...

‘Chrome Fitted for Footwear

By Louisville Courier Journal Hey, it worked for American Pharoah. The 2014 Kentucky Derby winner, California Chrome, has also added some special footwear on his front feet, co-owner Steve Coburn and his wife, Carolyn, tweeted Sunday. California Chrome missed his last start, in Royal Ascot’s Group I Prince of Wales’s Stakes, because of an abscess in his right-front foot. Applying a pair of bar shoes is an old-school method of keeping weight off the colt’s heels as he readies for his next test, the Aug. 15 Arlington Million back in the United States. American Pharoah wore a different piece of equipment during his run to the Triple Crown, with a protective plate covering his left-front sole — a sort of shock absorber. He both trained and raced with the plate, which trainer Bob Baffert downplayed in terms of its importance. It’s unknown how long Art Sherman will keep bar shoes on California Chrome, who for now remains in England, still with a month and a half to train up to... ...
