Bookies Luck Holds on in GS Juvenile

From DMTC Publicity DEL MAR, Calif. (Nov. 4, 2017) — Under a typically vigorous ride by Hall of Famer Kent Desormeaux, Bookies Luck held on tenaciously in the final strides to nose out the hard-charging Smokem in the $200,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes Saturday, the second of 12 races on the second day of the Breeders’ Cup Championships at Del Mar. Bookies Luck, the narrow 8-5 favorite over Smokem, who also went to the post at 8-5, scored his third win in six starts in a game performance for breeders and owners Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams and trainer Jeff Bonde. “The outside post helped us a lot,” said Bonde. “This is a really deep track and you’ve got to have something left at the end.  I think Kent (Desormeaux) did a really good job of rationing his speed and it was really close at the end.” Smokem, who was piloted by Evin Roman, finished four and one-half lengths in front of third-place Lucky Romano, with Campaigner fourth in... ...

We knew she could run on dirt. She’s got a brother that won half a million on turf, so we started her there. I’m going to give her about 60 days off now and bring her back as a really good 3-year-old, and I do believe she’ll run on.” Show It N Moe It was third, a length behind the runner-up and almost four lengths in front... ...

Bloodhorse.com on Skye Diamonds

By Bloodhorse.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2017) — The decision was made. The ownership group agreed to put up $40,000 to claim Skye Diamonds. One of the owners, Jon Lindo, had picked out the First Dude  filly as one to claim in August of 2016. As a 3-year-old California-bred, she fit some potentially lucrative conditions, and he liked the way she tried during races. Trainer Bill Spawr agreed, as did the other owners in the group—Jeff Bloom, Tom Acker, and Chuck Allen. But when they saw the chestnut filly in the paddock before the 6 1/2-furlong test at Del Mar, Bloom and Allen lacked enthusiasm. “I said, ‘Wait, this is who we’re claiming?’ ” Bloom remembered. “She didn’t look the part. She just didn’t really look that great. I was standing there with Chuck Allen, and he and I are joking, ‘Maybe we’ll get lucky and there’ll be a shake and we’ll lose the shake.’ “Her coat just wasn’t great. She didn’t pop.” Then they watched Skye Diamonds close... ...

Forever Juanito was only a half-length farther back in fourth place, a nose in front of Eckersley in the field of nine older horses. Withdrawn from the race was Dimension. “I didn’t get away from there as quick as I wanted,” Said Smith. “He was moving when they sent them and I was just a little behind. Miss Sunset Wins Keeneland’s Raven Run

By DRF.com LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 21, 2017) — A pair of California girls did battle in Saturday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland, with Miss Sunset scoring a half-length victory over a game Chalon. Miss Sunset ($8.80) had been trouncing her fellow California-breds as of late, coming in off a 5 1/2-length victory in the Fleet Treat Stakes and a 1 3/4-length score in the C.E.R.F. Stakes, both at Del Mar. Owners Alan Klein and Phil Lebhen opted to scratch her out of last week’s California Distaff and ship her in for this spot. “My owners [still] own the mare, so they thought it was in their interests to try to get this horse graded placed,” trainer Jeff Bonde said. Chalon, stakes-placed in California for trainer Peter Miler and Rockingham Ranch, was making her second start at this Keeneland meet, wheeling back after finishing a creditable second to Finley’sluckycharm in the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes on Oct. 7. From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 21, 2017)–Beaten a combined 39 ½ lengths in his last two starts in Oklahoma and West Virginia, Reddam Racing’s homebred B Squared tried a new game Saturday at Santa Anita as he rolled from off the pace to take the $100,000 California Flag Handicap for Golden State Series eligibles under Mario Gutierrez. Trained by Doug O’Neill, the 3-year-old California-bred colt by Square Eddie got 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course in 1:11.38. Although he was shortening up out of six consecutive routes, most recently the Grade III Oklahoma Derby on Sept. 24 and the Grade III West Virginia Derby Aug. 5, B Squared was attentive to the early pace while under restraint, was a menacing third a quarter mile from home as he wheeled three-wide at the dirt crossing and won in convincing fashion over a well-meant Richard’s Boy. “I don’t think we could imagine a better race than that,” said Gutierrez. “He broke nice and sharp and after that, I... ...

Fire Threatens Equine Retirement Facility

By Jack Shinar, Bloodhorse.com   SONOMA, Calif. (Oct. 10, 2017) — The Glen Ellen Vocational Academy, Northern California’s oldest Thoroughbred retirement and rehabilitation facility, is perilously  threatened by the one of the large fires raging this week in the Sonoma County region.   GEVA owner Pam Berg said she and her neighbors were forced to immediately evacuate by officials in the early morning hours of Oct. 9 as the Nuns Fire, as it is being called, burned rapidly thanks to powerful winds and dry conditions on the surrounding ridge. She and her volunteers were forced to leave behind the 34 horses currently on the 8 1/2-acre property, situated in the rural hills near Jack London State Park. Most of the animals are retired Thoroughbreds off the track.   “I was awakened by a neighbor’s phone call at about 1 a.m.,” said Berg Oct. 10. “I went outside and it looked like the entire ridge was in flames. It was terrifying.”   Since then, most of the roads in the Glen... ...

Tribal Storm Wins Harris Farms Stakes

By DRF.com FRESNO, Calif. (Oct. 7, 2017) — Tribal Storm ($29.40) was content to sit far off the pace before unleashing a strong stretch run to win the $100,675 Harris Farms Stakes for Golden State Series eligible on Saturday at the Big Fresno Fair. The 3-year-old Papa Clem ridgling, bred and owned by longtime California breeders Curt and Lila Lanning, had only favored Solid Wager beaten down the backstretch of the six-furlong stakes for Cal-breds. Prime Issue set a legitimate pace with fractions of 22.86 and 45.33, while Irving Orozco didn’t push Tribal Storm, who was coming off an Aug. 27 sprint victory against older. Tribal Storm was still seventh in the field of nine at the quarter pole, but he was beginning to make his move. Jimmy Bouncer, defending winner of the Harris Farms, stuck his head in front of Prime Issue at the eighth pole, but Tribal Storm seemed to have momentum on his side. He dug in and continued to make up ground, beating Jimmy Bouncer by... ...

Stronach Shifts Breeding Focus to California

By PaulickReport.com Frank Stronach said the decision to put his family’s Adena Springs farm in Paris, Ky., on the market is based on a desire to improve racing in the states where he owns major racetracks. Though he mentioned California, Florida and Maryland, his primary focus seems to be in California, where he owns Santa Anita Park in Arcadia and Golden Gate Fields in Albany. His announcement will not affect the 2018 breeding season at Adena Springs, he said. “I want to sit down with the racing community – the owners, breeders and racing commission – to see what we can do to improve racing in California,” Stronach told the Paulick Report. “We have small fields because we haven’t got enough horses. We’ve got to see if we can do something about that. What can we do to have more California-breds and make the quality better? We need better stallions and a program to increase the number of California-breds. “I want to bounce some ideas off the racing commission, the breeders... ...

By DRF.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Sept. 28, 2017) — The California Horse Racing Board approved racing dates for the 2018 Southern California Thoroughbred circuit similar to this year at its monthly meeting on Thursday, but did not take action on the Northern California circuit after a disquieting 90-minute discussion about the state of the county fair circuit. Specific racing dates for Del Mar, Los Alamitos and Santa Anita on the Southern California circuit will be announced at the racing board’s next meeting, on Oct. 26 at Santa Anita. Racing board officials announced that Northern California racing dates will be awarded at that meeting. During the lengthy discussion on Thursday regarding Northern California dates, several speakers from Golden Gate Fields, county fairs, and horsemen’s organizations argued for a variety of positions, ranging from more racing dates at Golden Gate Fields during the summer, giving certain fairs more dates during specific weeks from July to early September, and a decline in handle at county fair meetings. Roof damage to barns was reported at Tampa Bay Downs, which currently is not racing; and the Palm Meadows training center had tree damage.
