Owners Protocols for Del Mar Fall Meet

(Oct. 22, 2020) — For the Del Mar Fall meet, which begins Saturday, Oct. 31, all CHRB licensed owners will be permitted on track for both morning workouts and afternoon races every day of the Fall meet. Unfortunately, due to state and local guidelines, non-licensed guests are still not permitted. Owners wishing to attend the races should email or call Mary Forney, Executive Director of TOC (mforney@toconline.com ) to secure access, and reservations can be made up until 24 hours before race day. To attend morning workouts, no advanced reservation is required. Trainer/Breeder Barry Abrams Passes at 66

(Oct. 10, 2020) — Barry Abrams, whose name will always be linked to Unusual Heat but who trained such other top runners as Del Mar Oaks (G1T) winner Famous Digger, died Oct. 9 in Pasadena, Calif., of respiratory failure after a long battle with throat cancer. He was 66. Funeral services will take place Monday, Oct. 19, at 3:00 p.m. PT at the Hollywood Hills location of Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Abrams famously claimed Unusual Heat and, with owners and the mother-son team of Madeline and Harris Auerbach, shepherded the horse into becoming one of California’s all-time leading sires. Wine Country Racing at Golden Gate Fields

The meet is being held in conjunction with the Sonoma County Fair. The meet will feature a pair of $50,000 turf stakes at 1 1/16 miles, the Luther Burbank for fillies and mares on Saturday and the Robert Dupret Derby for 3-year-olds on Aug. 8. Opening day on Friday will include four turf races, which have drawn fields of 7, 8, 7, and 10. The eight-race card drew 62 entries, an average of just under eight per race. “I think it’s obvious many trainers were just looking for grass racing,” racing secretary Patrick Mackey said.
