‘Chrome Back Home at Los Al

By Bloodhorse.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Oct. 13, 2015) — It was hard to tell who was happier Oct. 13 when California Chrome returned to Los Alamitos Race Course—trainer Art Sherman or the 4-year-old colt himself. As the truck and trailer carrying the chestnut colt turned into view at the Cypress, Calif., racetrack, the 78-year-old trainer could hardly contain himself. “Uh oh,” Sherman said, breaking into a version of Richard Wagner’s ‘Ride of the Valkyries.’ “Here we go. It feels like a Rocky movie.” California Chrome responded in kind, bellowing out a loud neigh as he approached the Sherman barn and playfully peeking out of the trailer window to get a good look at the home he left March 17. It’s been a long road back to the Golden State, where California Chrome was bred by owners Perry Martin and Steve Coburn (Coburn’s share has since been acquired by Taylor Made Stallions). A second-place finish in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) March 28 was followed by well-documented and controversial voyage to England,... ...

CHRB Approves 2016 Dates

By Bloodhorse.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 21, 2015) — After multiple months of delays for negotiations, the 2016 racing calendar for the Northern and Southern California circuits was approved by the California Horse Racing Board Aug. 20 at Del Mar. In Southern California, Los Alamitos Race Course will pick up three weeks of racing—between April 14 and May 1—splitting Santa Anita Park‘s monster early-year schedule as it stood in 2015, when it ran from late December to late June. But Los Alamitos will lose the July dates it has carried in its first two seasons of Thoroughbred racing to Santa Anita. The contentious Southern California discussion meandered at times, touching everything from still-lingering stabling issues in the aftermath of Hollywood Park’s closure to the weather at Santa Anita in September. Santa Anita and Del Mar jointly made a proposal without Los Alamitos gaining the April dates, and Los Alamitos filed a proposal to retain its July dates and gain April, but in the end, both had to give something up under pressure from the... ...

Gimme Da Lute in Real Good Romp

By Bloodhorse.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 2, 2015) — A little more than an hour after his stablemate wowed the masses on the East Coast, Bob Baffert-trained Gimme Da Lute dominated in the $200,000 Real Good Deal Stakes for Golden State Series eligibles at Del Mar. The 3-year-old son of Midnight Lute  —owned by breeders Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman—sat just off two dueling leaders, bypassed them with ease on the outside in the turn of the seven-furlong event, and pulled away to win by 12 1/4 lengths. “I stayed busy on him through the stretch,” said jockey Martin Garcia. “That last race at Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos Derby, July 4), when he made the lead he tried to pull himself up. I didn’t want that to happen today, so I stayed after him. I didn’t beat him up, just stayed after him. He’s a nice horse.” Rocko’s Wheel closed from last to finish second, followed by Grazen Sky a length back in third. Richard’s Boy, who broke from the rail, led early with fractions of :22.88... ...

Warren’s Veneda Might Try Classic

From DMTC Publicity DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 2, 2015) — Trainer Craig Lewis said that Hirsch third-place finisher Warren’s Veneda came out of the race in good shape. Lewis also said there was “an outside chance” the 5-year-old California-bred mare, who chased Beholder home while conceding weight to the champion in the Adoration Stakes in June at Santa Anita as well as the Hirsch, would run in the TVG Pacific Classic. “We’d get some pace, which we didn’t get yesterday,” Lewis said. “And we’ll finally get even weight (with Beholder).” The first quarter in the 1 1/16 mile Hirsch was run in :23.91, more than a half-second slower than that of an allowance optional $40,000 claimer that immediately followed. In Lewis’ estimation the slow early pace compromised the chances of late-running Warren’s Veneda, who carried two pounds more than Beholder. In the Pacific Classic females are accorded a five-pound break in the weights. Beholder and Warren’s Veneda would both be assigned 119. “I don’t know if we could beat Beholder under... ...

Triple Crown Drought Over

By Bloodhorse.com ELMONT, N.Y. (June 6, 2015) — The drought is mercifully over. In the 37th year after Affirmed swept the classics in 1978, Zayat Stables’ American Pharoah toyed with the field of seven other horses to win the $1.5 millionBelmont Stakes Presented by DraftKings (gr. ‘Chrome Works at Royal Ascot

By The Guardian ASCOT, Great Britain (June 4, 2015) — California Chrome ran what looked like a pleasing trial for Royal Ascot on his first visit to this track on Thursday morning but few people can ever have been so frankly and publicly sorry to be here than Alan Sherman, son of Art, the chestnut’s American trainer. “Obviously, we’d rather be home and running there,” Sherman said after watching the horse gallop. The decision to aim California Chrome at the Prince of Wales’s Stakes later this month was made by Perry Martin, who owns 70% of the colt. Art Sherman has already made it clear that he would have formed a very different plan and, short of bursting into tears, his son could not have been plainer about sharing that regret. “It’s not our decision, that was up to the owners and we’re just going to do what we can that’s best for the horse,” said Sherman Jr. In the buttoned-up world of British Flat racing, it would be rare to hear... ...

The race that got Martin wound up the most had been the one he took aim on soon after his colt was born—the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). “The emotions were all over the board that day,” Martin said about the Derby. “Our goal, what we had mapped out, was to get to the Derby and win the Derby. My mother even checked herself out of the hospital to go watch our horse run.” By the time the Belmont rolled around, Martin, who partners with Steve Coburn on California Chrome, said he didn’t feel any stress…at least before the race.   “When they came out of the gate, I knew immediately something was... ...
