Norm Tavares was getting good at piecing together work—so good, in fact, that his accountant told him to find a way to write some of his earnings off.  “He said I’m working too many jobs,” Tavares recalled.  One of those jobs was selling copies of Daily Racing Form. A friend suggested Tavares get involved in racehorse ownership and introduced him to David and Dennis Landucci, who owned horses on the Northern California circuit. “Bless them, they took good care of me,” Tavares said. “They helped me get in and learn about the business.” Tavares ultimately branched off  to have his own string of runners with trainer Greg Gilchrist. “He was a super guy, and I was sad when he retired,” Tavares said. “We claimed some; we bought some. Remembering Peter Tunney

Peter Tunney, who served the racing industry both as an executive at California tracks and as a trustee of the California Thoroughbred Foundation, died Sept. 22 at age 83 at his home in Piedmont after a lengthy illness. Associated primarily with Golden Gate Fields, where he had worked for decades, Tunney also had been a racing official at Southern California tracks, including as Del Mar’s racing secretary from 1972-74. He joined the Golden Gate team as general manager in 1980 and later served as an executive vice president before retiring in 2017. Tunney helped represent the Foundation in Northern California and was an active participant at board meetings. His daughter, Courtney Tunney Hotchkis, became  a Foundation trustee late last year. (Oct. 29, 2021) — Veteran announcer Larry Collmus, who stepped up to pinch-hit for Del Mar’s longtime caller Trevor Denman during the height of the COVID-19 crisis in 2020, has been called to the plate once more. He’ll take over this time for the recently injured Denman for the majority of the track’s upcoming fall race meet that begins Nov. 3. Denman, 68, suffered a painful herniated disc in his back earlier this week at his home in Minnesota when he slipped and tumbled down the stairs of his deck which were wet from early morning dew. Ed Moger Jr. 

Trainer Ed Moger Jr. notes that he essentially walked out of high school and onto the racetrack.  “I worked for Jay Mills in Washington for maybe one year, but pretty quickly I was training on my own,” he said. Moger saddled his first runner in 1976, winning his first race. He added three more wins that season with a diminutive stable. In the years since, he has seen considerable success, winning graded stakes races and reaching the $1 million earnings mark in 17 different seasons. Now, the 65-year-old California-based conditioner is working to attract brand new clients into the sport of horse racing. (Sept. 27, 2021) — Undefeated  California-bred 2-year-old colt Joker Boy will have his graded stakes debut in Friday’s Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita. Jockey Boy is by Practical Joke, out of the Dixieland Band mare Bandora and was bred by Premier Thoroughbreds. The decision was finalized after Joker Boy worked five furlongs in 1:00.40 at Santa Anita on Saturday. Trainer Brian Koriner said the $300,000 American Pharoah Stakes was selected for Joker Boy instead of waiting for the $175,000 Golden State Juvenile for statebreds on Nov. 5 at Del Mar. “It’s worth the try, and there is nowhere else to run,” Koriner said. “I don’t know if we have anything to lose.
