Lava Man Recovering from Colic Surgery

From DMTC Publicity DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 10, 2018) — Among the thousands in attendance in the first weeks of Del Mar’s 79th summer season was an old, familiar face. Fourteen years prior, during the track’s 65th summer season, a dark bay Thoroughbred gelding with a star, a stripe and a blaze on his head finished second, beaten by four lengths in the first race of the day on Friday, August 13, 2004. In the aftermath of that mile and one-sixteenth claimer, that horse – a 3-year-old California-bred named Lava Man — was haltered for $50,000 by trainer Doug O’Neill for owners Dave and Steve Kenly’s STD Racing Stable of Phoenix, AZ, and Jason Wood of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. Lava Man would eventually go on to become one of California’s most prominent racehorses and the all-time leading earner among all claimers with career earnings of over $5.2 million. “The owners get credit for claiming him, but I saw that he was a big, good looking horse,” O’Neill said of... ...

Masochistic Back in Light Training

By Bloodhorse.com DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 9, 2018) — Grade 1 winner Masochistic, the gelding who was at the center of multiple controversies during his five seasons of racing and was retired in March, has returned to light training at Del Mar for a simple reason. He can’t stand being turned out, and when they tried to make him a trail horse—look out. “He’s gained a ton of weight. He’s like a pony right now,” said new trainer Kristin Mulhall, who has cared for Masochistic since his retirement. “When you get on his back, it’s a different story. He does not enjoy just being turned out. He does not enjoy being a pet. He did not enjoy not doing anything, basically. He’s not going to be a trail horse unless you plan on match racing.” So with limited options for his post-racing career because of his attitude, owner Will Shamlian and Mulhall sent Masochistic back to the racetrack. First they attempted to make him a stable pony, but he wasn’t having... ...

Small Business Deductions Clarified

From NTRA WASHINGTON, D.C. Small business owners now have more clarity on how they may be able to take advantage of the deduction that was included in the tax reform legislation passed in December 2017.   Owners of businesses such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, trusts and S corporations now may be able to deduct 20 percent of their qualified business income when filing their tax returns. Qualified business income includes domestic income from a trade or business but does not include employee income, capital gains, interest and dividend income. Katie Fisher

Read online: By California Thoroughbred Katie Fisher gave the question some thought, then summed herself up with: “Two farms and two kids. That’s me.” Fisher can hardly be defined so succinctly. She hails from a show horse and agricultural background, worked alongside mentor Tom Hudson at Magali Farms for 12 years, and now has her own pair of farms just miles apart. To top it all off, she is the mother of twin toddlers, helping her children to grow while simultaneously helping some 40 horses through the rehabilitation process. Fisher grew up showing Arabian horses and working at an Arabian farm. She was known at the Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center when Magali manager Tom Hudson put out the word that he needed an assistant. Hudson asked Dr. Ed Hamer if he knew anyone, and the veterinarian confirmed that he did, urging Hudson to hire Fisher straight away. The instant Fisher showed interest in Hudson’s proposal, he answered, “Great! See you tomorrow morning at 7.” Thus began a 12-year partnership.... ...

CHRB Approves Golden Gate Dates

By Bloodhorse.com CYPRESS, Calif. (July 12, 2018) — While bigger battles could reshape the Northern California racing and wagering landscape, those disagreements will not impact the upcoming Golden Gate Fields meeting. At its July 12 meeting at Los Alamitos Race Course, the California Horse Racing Board saw enough of an agreement between Golden Gate owner The Stronach Group, off-track betting locations, and the fair tracks to approve the Aug. 22-Oct. 2 race dates for the Northern California track. The race dates were conditionally approved June 21, but it was uncertain whether those conditions would be met. At that time, as part of being rewarded the dates, the CHRB said The Stronach Group would need to reach simulcast agreements with each Northern California satellite wagering facility as well as a horsemen’s agreement with the Thoroughbred Owners of California by July 2. The Stronach Group balked at those conditions. At Thursday’s meeting, CHRB staff confirmed those agreements had not been turned in by the deadline. While that deadline was not met, The Stronach Group’s... ...

By Bloodhorse.com SACRAMENTO, Calif. (June 29, 2018) — About a month after members of the California Horse Racing Board promised changes to the composition of stewards on the Southern California racing circuit, changes have indeed been made ahead of the upcoming summer meet at Del Mar. According to the CHRB, steward Scott Chaney, who has served in that position in Southern California for more than a decade, will be the first steward shuffled in an ongoing “rotation” between the two regions of the state.
