We were concerned about the weight. She was spotting the other fillies an awful lot of weight. Bettor Trip Nick Wins Golden Nugget

From DRF.com ALBANY, Calif. (Nov. 10, 2019) — California-bred Bettor Trip Nick was never headed as he scored an upset victory in the $63,800 Golden Nugget Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday. Five of the six entrants in the six-furlong race for 2-year-olds had shown early speed in previous races, but Bettor Trip Nick, one of two runners going off at double-digit odds, was the quickest after breaking on top under Catalino Martinez. The Boat Trip gelding had a 1 1/2-length lead over No Longer Silent, one of the favorites, after 21.53-second opening quarter-mile, a margin he maintained through a half mile in 44.30. Bettor Trip Nick seemed to be on cruise control before Martinez asked for a little more turning for home. His mount responded, spurting to a 3 1/2-length lead over favored Fore Left. Doc Tommy, third at the eighth pole closed well, but Martinez had enough horse left to win by a half-length in 1:09.35. Fore Left, a multiple stakes winner, was third, beaten by three... ...

CTT Aids Effort to Acquire Advanced MRI

From Santa Anita Publicity ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 31, 2019) — At a special Board of Directors meeting held Sunday, October 27, the leadership of California Thoroughbred Trainers (CTT) voted to assist in immediate fund-raising for the Southern California Equine Foundation (SCEF) purchase of an equine MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) facility to be added to the Equine Imaging Center at Santa Anita Park. The proven technology has been in use elsewhere previously, whereby the horse is standing while scanned. The urgency of the fund-raising effort is based on a November 15 deadline to contract for the equipment which would then be installed at Santa Anita prior to the start of the upcoming Winter/Spring Thoroughbred race meeting commencing on December 26. SCEF, via the Dolly Green Foundation, has already pledged $450,000 to the project. Raising a matching amount would not only secure the standing MRI for use with horses at Santa Anita and training elsewhere in Southern California, but also reduce the ongoing per-scan charges for veterinarians, owners, and trainers, once the... ...

Jaime Roth

Read online:   By California Thoroughbred Jaime Roth owes everything to Rachel Alexandra. Other players are involved: Parents Larry and Nanci make up the rest of her LNJ Foxwoods moniker, and bloodstock agent Alex Solis II is just one of many horsemen helping drive her success. But without the talent and graceful athleticism of Rachel Alexandra, Roth would never have been hooked. Without that plunge into the sport, there would be no Covfefe, Constellation, Nickname, or California champion Cruel Intention. “I fell in love with her,” Roth said of Rachel Alexandra. “She was a girl running against the boys.” This rang true for the athletic Roth, who was talented enough to play on boys’ teams growing up. “She piqued my interest in horse racing. I found myself up late at night watching old races. I love animals, and I love sports. When you add that up, that’s a Thoroughbred.” A 2012 trip to Del Mar helped spur the decision. A family friend set Roth up with Alex Solis II –... ...

Homecourt an Advantage for Acclimate?

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 30, 2019) — As trainer Phil D’Amato prepares Acclimate for his engagement Nov. 2 in the $4 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1T) at Santa Anita Park, the California-based trainer is hopeful that the friendly confines of “The Great Race Place” in Arcadia, Calif., will be a blessing for his 5-year-old Acclamation  gelding. “I know we’re a longshot in there,” D’Amato said about the California-bred, “but we have the homecourt advantage and we hope to maximize it.” But is there an advantage for the two Californians in the field of 12? Especially with Acclimate and United both priced at 20-1 in the morning line? Talk to an East Coast trainer about shipping west for the Breeders’ Cup and you’ll generally hear some consternation, especially if they have dirt horses. It’s a different tale on turf. Easterners, in particular trainer Chad Brown, have thrived on California turf courses. Seven of Brown’s 12 Breeders’ Cup wins have come in turf races on the West Coast. Californians, for... ...
