The others are Shannon Bishop Arvin, Gary Barber, Terry Finley, Pope McLean Jr. and Jaime Roth. Winner has served on the California Horse Racing Board since 2012 and as its chairman since 2013. He is also on the advisory board of the California Retirement Management Account. Patiently handled in striking position by jockey Geovanni Franco, Prince Earl was able to slice through between horses in deep stretch to take command and then withstood the late challenge of Sharp Samurai to score by three-quarters of a length. From Marilyn Trevino It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of Senon Trevino. Many in horse racing’s family may remember win pictures with the spelling Senen Trevino. Senon once told me that a hard-headed Mexican woman in the racing office (I think Sunland Park) “corrected” the spelling from Senon to the proper Mexican spelling of Senen. He was tired of trying to set her straight hence the spelling confusion. Senon was born in Kemp, Texas on Dec. 27, 1941. Senon moved with his grandfather to Fredrick, Colorado when he was a toddler. He attended school in his home town of Fredrick, Colorado. Each day he went to school, each evening he and his grandfather learned English at the kitchen table. At high school he won letters in baseball, basketball, football and track and field. He earned a scholarship to Colorado State University due his math skill. (July 2, 2019) — Del Mar Thoroughbred Club staged the safest horse racing among major tracks in the country in 2018, but after a recent meet with 30 horse deaths at Santa Anita Park, Del Mar’s leadership hardly felt like it could go about business as usual. For the 36-day summer meet that begins July 17, Del Mar is adding a number of safety and oversight measures to those it instituted two years ago following difficult 2016 summer and fall racing seasons in which a total of 23 horses died in racing or training.
