Numbers declined from last year’s lively renewal of the auction, with 205 head grossing $6,257,100 and the average falling 22% to $30,522 and the median dipping 15% to $17,000. The buy-back rate was 25.7%. It was 24.4% in 2021. “It was a very solid session,” Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. said at the close of business Tuesday. “There was lots of traffic and activity at the barns before the sale and there was spirited bidding on the majority of the horses. There still remained some selectivity in the marketplace–you have to have acceptable conformation, and, like at every sale in the world, you have to jump through the vetting hoops. But I thought, all in all, it was a good follow-up to an exceptional year last year.” A year ago,... ...

Mind Control Repeats Parx Mile Win

By DRF.com BENSALEM, Pa. (Sept. 24, 2022) – With an assist from the Parx Racing stewards, Mind Control captured the $200,000 Parx Dirt Mile for the second consecutive year. Ridden by John Velazquez for Todd Pletcher, the Kentucky-bred son of California stallion Stay Thirsty broke alertly over the speed-friendly surface but was forced to track the pace as jockey Dexter Haddock and Far Mo Power had better early speed. Far Mo Power set rated fractions of 24.06 seconds, 47.54, and 1:11.50 while shadowed by Mind Control, and the two hooked up turning into the stretch. Mind Control had momentum, but Far Mo Power was far from finished. Haddock scrubbed on the Pennsylvania-bred colt, and Far Mo Power surged back to a brief advantage inside the three-sixteenths pole. Haddock went to work with a left-handed stick, however, and Far Mo Power came out a couple of paths. That forced Velazquez to briefly check his momentum. Mind Control re-rallied nearing the wire but fell a neck shy after a mile in 1:36.59.... ...

Earlier this month, Paul Reddam said the couple planned to downsize their racing and breeding operation. Before withdrawals, Tuesday’s catalog has 354 horses, with California-breds dominating the yearling portion of the sale. The sale begins at 11 a.m. at Fairplex in Pomona at the facility once operated by Barretts Sales. The 2021 auction had an average price of $39,173 compared to an average of $22,504 in 2020 when the sale was held at Los Alamitos in Orange County because of crowd restrictions in place... ...

NTRA Applauds Congressional Work

From NTRA WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 15, 2022) As expected, last week the House of Representatives passed the $700 billion clean energy and tax reconciliation bill, which will be signed into law by President Biden this week. With no changes from the Senate version we highlighted last week, it continues to mean good news for the Thoroughbred industry since this bill will have very little that will directly impact individual horse and farm owners. IRS Funding – High earners will face a better-funded, more aggressive IRS under the bill, because it included increased funding... ...
