CHRB Meeting Advisory

From CHRB ALBANY, Calif. (Mar. 23, 2018) — The Special Committee on Northern California Racing will hold two meetings in coming weeks to resolve stabling issues during the fair season this summer. The first, private meeting with representatives of Golden Gate Fields, the California Authority of Racing Fairs (CARF), the Sonoma County Fair and horsemen is scheduled for Thursday, March 29, in hopes of bringing those parties to agreement. The second meeting, which will be open to the public, is scheduled the following Thursday, April 5, at Golden Gate. The Committee held a public meeting Thursday (March 22) at Golden Gate that was attended by about 50 trainers and owners, most of whom expressed approval when Alan Balch, executive director of the California Thoroughbred Trainers, said it is crucial for Golden Gate to remain open for auxiliary stabling during the fair season. They disagreed with a CARF proposal to rely solely on stalls at fair locations in Pleasanton, Sacramento and Fresno for auxiliary stabling. The parties still are at least... ...

Santa Anita Thursday Card Cancelled

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 22, 2018) — Santa Anita Park cancelled its March 22 card because of ongoing heavy rain in Southern California and most—if not all—of the races washed away could be rescheduled for future dates. John Perrotta, Santa Anita’s vice president of operations, said the decision to cancel the Thursday races was primarily made for safety reasons. The impact of scratch-shortened fields and preparing the Santa Anita main track for weekend racing also factored in. The National Weather Service issued flash-flood advisories for several California counties Thursday, including Los Angeles County, and 15 horses of 67 entered were reported as scratched when the cancellation was announced. “It was in the interest of everybody’s safety. There is a dire prediction for weather the rest of the day and a lot of trainers had scratched already,” Perrotta  said. “We also had to look at protecting the track for the weekend and we had to do it early rather than late. If we open up the track and the huge... ...

CHRB Issues EHV-1 Update

From CHRB CYPRESS, Calif. (Feb. 28, 2018) — There have been no significant changes since the California Horse Racing Board’s February 23 update concerning the horse at Los Alamitos that tested positive for the non-neurogenic, “wild type” strain of equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1). There have been no other suspect cases at Los Alamitos or at any racetrack in California. One barn at Los Alamitos with 11 horses remains under quarantine by order of California Department of Food and Agriculture veterinarians, who will lift the 14-day quarantine on Monday, March 5, provided there are no additional sick horses. The CHRB will continue to allow horses from Los Alamitos to race at Santa Anita under the same conditions as previously described. Those horses must be inspected by CHRB veterinarians prior to shipping to Santa Anita; they will not be allowed into the general Santa Anita population; and they are required to return to Los Alamitos after racing. Normal transfer of horses between Los Alamitos and Santa Anita will not resume until the quarantined... ...

Los Alamitos Barn in Quarantine

By Bloodhorse.com CYPRESS, Calif. (Feb. 23, 2018) — A pony based at Los Alamitos Race Course was euthanized and later tested positive for the “wild-type” strain of equine herpesvirus type 1, which forced a barn at the Southern California racetrack to go through quarantine procedures. According to an alert posted by the California Department of Food and Agriculture Feb. 21, a 10-year-old pony “displaying severe neurologic signs was euthanized” and tested positive for EHV-1. EHV-1 has sprung up at multiple racetracks across the country in recent weeks. California Horse Racing Board equine medical director Rick Arthur confirmed the case of EHV-1 at Los Alamitos and provided additional details. “The pony was used to pony (Quarter Horses) at Los Alamitos during the races. He last worked (Feb. 11),” Arthur said of the deceased horse, who was euthanized Feb. 18. “The barn where the horse was housed is under quarantine, and the six (Quarter Horses) he ponied during the races going back to (Feb. 7) are being closely monitored.” Arthur said there have not... ...

Bloodhorse.com on Cal Cup

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 24, 2018) — By simple deduction, California-bred stakes are supposed to be easier than those against open company. They’re supposed to be a nice, soft spot for a quality payday. But the $150,000 Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint Stakes, which arrives on a Jan. 27 card that features nine Cal-bred races (four stakes) at Santa Anita Park, is no layup. The presumptive favorite for the six-furlong sprint is grade 1 winner Masochistic, who is scheduled to make his 8-year-old debut and his first start for trainer Bob Baffert, but trainer John Sadler feels he has an up-and-coming contender in the division in Hronis Racing’s Edwards Going Left. A $50,000 claim by Sadler and Hronis in February of 2017 in his debut, the Midnight Lute  gelding won six of his nine starts the rest of the year—including a Cal-bred stakes win in the Nov. 19 Cary Grant at Del Mar—and showed his class extended beyond the state-bred ranks with a second-place finish in the Dec. 26 Malibu Stakes (G1) to close his... ...

Cal Cup Program Gets a Few Tweaks

By DRF.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 21, 2018) — The California Cup program for statebreds here on Saturday has added a $100,000 race for 3-year-old turf sprinters, but two races for 3-year-olds held last year on this day will be run in February instead. The $100,000 California Cup Turf Sprint for 3-year-olds at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course is a new race and one of four stakes at Santa Anita Saturday. Two $200,000 stakes previously run on the California Cup program will be run Feb. 19 – the California Cup Derby at 1 1/16 miles and the California Cup Oaks at a mile on turf. “We moved the 3-year-old stakes down the road, figuring we’d get a horse or two extra,” said Santa Anita racing secretary and vice president Rick Hammerle. That left a void on the Cal Cup program partially filled by the Turf Sprint, which drew 18 nominations and is likely to have a field of eight to 10 runners. Officials with Santa Anita and... ...

By Bloodhorse.com ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 20, 2018) — Masochistic‘s final work for his 2018 debut was technically “in company” Jan. 20 at Santa Anita Park. Three other workers went into the gate with him and left the gate with him, but he might as well have been alone. Under jockey Drayden Van Dyke, Masochistic popped out of the gate and immediately put open lengths between himself and the other workers. He was four to five lengths ahead in the backstretch, and the others who left the gate never got close to the speedy grade 1 winner. The 8-year-old Sought After gelding owned by Los Pollos Hermanos Racing and Jay Em Ess Stable completed his five-furlong work in :59 4/5, the co-fastest of 77 drills at the distance on the Santa Anita main track Saturday. CHRB Statement on Bonsall Fire

From CHRB BONSALL, Calif. (Dec. 7, 2017) — A fire erupted in northeast San Diego County Thursday afternoon and quickly engulfed approximately eight barns at the San Luis Rey (SLR) training center in Bonsall where nearly 500 racehorses were stabled. When safe for the horse vans to again enter the facility, most of the remaining horses were taken 35 miles south to Del Mar Racetrack where personnel and volunteers are adequately caring for them. As of 7:30 p.m. some 30 horses at SLR were still in the process of being evacuated and an unknown number of horses housed in pastures surrounding the property were unaccounted for as... ...

She just didn’t really look that great. I was standing there with Chuck Allen, and he and I are joking, ‘Maybe we’ll get lucky and there’ll be a shake and we’ll lose the shake.’ “Her coat just wasn’t great. She didn’t pop.” Then they watched Skye Diamonds close... ...
