Winter Mixed Sale Wednesday at Fairplex

The sale consists of a large number of newly turned 2-year-olds, as well as yearlings and broodmares. With 154 head cataloged, the sale will begin at noon PST at Fairplex Park in Pomona, Calif. This is the same setting Barretts used throughout its 29 years of existence and it is also a year-round simulcast facility. Topped by a 2-year-old son of Quality Road  sold for $120,000, last year’s sale saw 111 horses gross $1,180,600 for an average of $10,636. The 2018 sale also included several stallion seasons and art items that were donated to raise more than $25,000 for victims of the San Luis Rey Downs fire, with Barretts donating 10% of its commissions from the horses sold at the sale to the relief effort. CARMA Holiday Classic This Weekend

Rick Hammerle Out at Santa Anita

(Nov. 30, 2018) — Rick Hammerle has been removed from his position as racing secretary at Santa Anita Park, according to several sources with direct knowledge of the situation. The decision comes less than a week after track announcer Michael Wrona was removed from his position at the track, along with other employees of The Stronach Group who worked on the Santa Anita simulcast feed and for the Stronach-owned XBTV. Executives and spokesmen with Santa Anita and its owner, The Stronach Group, who have been contacted about the move either denied knowledge of the situation, did not answer, or directed inquiries to Tim Ritvo, The Stronach Group’s chief operating officer. Ritvo and Hammerle have not answered requests for comment. Hammerle was listed as the vice president of racing and racing secretary on Santa Anita’s meet application that was conditionally approved by the California Horse Racing Board Nov. 30. It is the responsibility of each racing office to refuse the entry of any horse that does not carry a microchip.  Additionally, the inventory and movement tracking system, in order to be accurate, requires that the InCompass Solutions Microchip Module be properly installed and managed. It still didn’t make the latest installment any less of a blow to absorb. The Hall of Fame jockey with two career comebacks already under his belt confirmed Nov. 20 he will be retiring from the saddle again effectively immediately due to a spinal injury suffered in the post parade of a race at Del Mar this past weekend. Daily Racing Form was the first report of Stevens’ retirement. Stevens told DRF that he initially thought he suffered a pinched nerve in his neck but that an MRI on Tuesday revealed “the C-4 (vertebrae) is up against the spinal cord” and that another fall could lead to a more serious issue. (Sept. 8, 2018) – Post time for the Los Angeles County Fair meet at Los Alamitos will move to 2 p.m. – from the current 1 p.m. – beginning Thursday, Sept. 13.         The switch to 2 p.m. – which was approved Friday by the California Horse Racing Board – means post time will be the same as it was during the previous Los Angeles County Fair meets (2014-2017).          In addition, the Los Alamitos Racing Association has added a second Pick 5 to the wagering menu, which will also commence Sept. 13.        The second Pick 5 – which is a 50-cent minimum wager – will be on the final five races, joining the extremely popular Players’ Pick 5 which is offered on the day’s first five races.         The Los Angeles County Fair meet, which began Thursday, will continue through Sunday, Sept. 23. ...

The one-mile Johnston, which is for 3-year-olds & up bred or sired in California, is part of a stakes doubleheader on the third day of the Los Angeles County Fair meet. Seven 3-year-old fillies will get together in the $75,000 Beverly J. Lewis at six furlongs.
